Good introduction for people coming from Lightroom, much better than the other guy trying to burden and confuse new users into "Filmic RGB" when people are just trying to learn the basic interface, he nearly turned me away from darktable and your video brought me back. We are probably one of the countless customers Adobe had frustrated and looking for alternatives. Looking to try this on my 3rd computer so that I need not pay adobe for yet another license. As a busy photographer more than decade deepset into the Lightroom workflow I don't have time to relearn everything from scratch and change things, especially when still using the lightroom on the main editing computers. Thousands of images each week, culling, organization and simple basic edits AND the way to do them intuitively are way more important to me. Am sure there are many many like me, just looking for an alternative to continue our work, if we could make darktable do lightroom things without changing our established workflow, styles and habits, we will. I really like the part you highlighted about the modular modules, just keeping the module simple with basic, white balance and cropping, and maybe some localized brushes. Thats really all I need.

I feel (or should I say "felt") your pain. Back in 2016, I was in the same boat. Couldn't wait to turn my back on Adobe and their predatory pricing model. Never been happier. As for learning the workflow (and I realise you already do this for a job!), put aside an hour a night, and re-do the work you did in LR that day, but in dt. I promise you, you'll be up to speed in a week. If you haven't already, watch ep 091 (scene-referred vs display-referred) for a deeper understanding of how dt does stuff under the hood. Good luck with the transition!

I believe it is, at least in part, due to seeing your enthusiasm in explaining the workings of it. No wonder, this video which was intended for newbies are also watched & enjoyed by many like me. This video was immensely helpful! Photography is a hobby of mine, not doing it professionally, but after switching to Linux due to frustrations with Windows (and for easier work, I am a developer by day) together with ditching Adobe, I kinda stopped because I didn't find the time to learn Darktable. The application is very powerful and I learned some bits of it to develop some photos but my missing knowledge still stopped me from taking and developing photos more often. This video was incredibly helpful to understand the application better, find a structure to save my photos I am comfortable with and understand some of the frustrations I had with the application before today. Thank you!

Wow, this was awesome! I just started with DarkTable a few days ago, and while I was starting to make my way around, watching your video was VERY worthwhile for me! I've watched a few other people's videos, and while I learned some things, this one has really helped create a solid foundation for learning more. Thank you so very much! Many video tutorials also have a lot of "fluff" in them and I'm trying to hope the presenter moves past their fluff talk - yours was not like that at all. I just had to keep pausing when I wanted to make some notes :). Thank you so very much once again! I appreciate all the effort and thought you put into this.

Thanks Ian. I do make a concerted effort NOT to let my videos stray off the beaten path... at least until the END of the video. I try to cover the main stuff first, and THEN, if I have anything else I want to talk about, I put it at the end so people are free to click away if they don't want to stay around. I've been burned on so many youtube videos and I hate it, so I'm guessing my audience would feel the same way. I once watched a 15 min video where the actual " content" (ie what the title indicated) didn't start 'til 12 minutes in!!

Hi Bruce, no need to remove images and reimport them to change between scene-referred and display-referred. Just go to history stack, select the first item "0. original" and then "compress stack", and your history will be replaced with a fresh stack including base curve or filmic, depdning on your preference setting.

I have now watched the entire newbie series 1/5 and thoroughly enjoyed it as I tend to work on some of my Raw files along side yours as tutorial and also the 4 part new launch of 3.4 series but then thought it was ok to start out again at the beginning but realised that some eps are suited to earlier versions and wondered if you could recommend which I should concentrate on accordingly - looking for a route map and this time I have written down my comment ep 069 as there are a couple of other comments I have made but cant find them as youtube no longer send autonotes out to say reply has been made or if they do my youtube in chrome doesn't

As I mentioned in one of your earlier comments about this, I have playlists for each version of darktable, but that doesn't mean that a video made two years ago is necessarily irrelevant now... Many of them still are. I don't really have any suggestions for which ones should be avoided (other than the first video about filmic, because I made a new version of that when Aurélien upgraded it).

@25:20 if you switch to new scene-referred method and want to use old images, I think that you don't need to remove image and import it again. Instead, AFAIK, you can go to the light table view and "discard history" which should delete/null the sidecar file but leave the image, prepping the image for a fresh filmic/expos method

Mostly watched to keep up with your content. But I enjoyed your discussion of the advantages of darktable. The advantages you mentioned for darktable come down to open source-ness. Proprietary software must always protect itself first, even if the choice that is made is inconvenient to the user. Things must be kept hidden. Many of the points you mentioned had to do with everything being out there for everyone to see. It leaves one less confused, more educated, more empowered, and better able to find answers. Thank you so much for your support of that cause!

For those on Windows that get bent out of shape about the XMP files, you can use "Group by > Type" in Windows Explorer to separate the image files from the sidecar files. You can then collapse the XMP files to hide them if you want, leaving you free to just browse through the image files.

Using Darktable for JPEG’s is one of the better ways to work with JPEG’s. Because Darktable edits are non-destructive, it doesn’t produce additional artifacts prior to export. The JPEG workflow is very similar to the RAW workflow. Another great video. Thanks for what you do.
@audio2u
@audio2u 4 жыл бұрын
No worries! Although I'm not sure I completely agree with that sentiment (about artifacts). Artifacts get introduced whenever you edit and re-save any digital file stored using lossy compression (jpeg images, mp3 audio, etc). I don't think the software (darktable or otherwise) is necessarily responsible for the quantity of visible artifacts. It all comes down to the LEVEL of compression being employed.
@b.jammin
@b.jammin 4 жыл бұрын
@@audio2u Sorry for not being clear. Darktable only produces artifacts when exporting into a lossy format. This happens whether the "negative" is a RAW file or a JPG. The quality of a JPG "negative" from the camera might be less than the quality of a RAW "negative" from the camera. Darktable preserves the original either way.

I subscribed and I liked the video more because I see your love and passion for image editing and for this particular software. After this video I can now better understand the purpose of existence and direction of this software, I still think it is way to cumbersome to quickly edit images, but at least I can make sense of what is going on here with the modules. I believe in an era of happy trigger digital cameras, volumes of images to be inspected, imported, catalogued and process, we are still looking for a software with an interface that is gear for speedy processing. Lightroom is pretty good, but now we have to rent it to use it and that kills it for me. Canon DPP 4 is another great attempt that needs more polishing. Darktable looks very potent but not stream lined enough to yield a speedy workflow. When I pull an SD card out of my camera and plug it into my computer, before I even think of moving any of those images, I want to be able to inspect the content right where it is. Be able to go through each one of the images inside the card, blow it to be able to check focus, exposure, composition, and color. If the image is not a keeper I want to eliminate it in an instance, just hit delete and not get any confirmation pop up. If I find an image that is not a favorite, but an image that I still would like to play with it to learn from, I want to rate it or flag it some how with 1 star, if I got lucky with an image that looks almost perfect, I want to rate it 5 star. Once I have gotten rid of all the bad ones, now I am ready to import, I can use file manager to move the files to a local folder on the internal library. Once all the images are inside the computer, now I want to bring them into the editing software. Now I need a friendly user interface with the modules that I like to use readily available, Crop, expose, white balance, color HSL, Sharpening. Once I am done with the image, I want to be able to export it quickly and easily. I need to have UNDO readily, if I make a change and I don't like it, I want to be able to digress and try a different way easily. To me that software doesn't exist yet.

And what does importing mean, I already have all my photos in a huge catalag, by year-month-day. Most of them raw photos. I wouldn't like 2 terabytes of photos imported double again... sorry I speak spanish, sometimes it comes a bit hard to understand english, though you speak so but so clearly!!! Thank you so much and best regards from Uruguay. PS, not every program uses xmp... for example, DxOptics uses a .DOP to save the side files...

Hi Daniela! First up, your Spanish is just fine! As for big sur, I don't really know, as I'm a Linux user. But I've heard that some people have had issues with the latest Mac os. As for umpiring, darktable does not duplicate your images. When you import photos, darktable leaves the image files where they were at the time of import (which is why I don't use desirable to import images from memory card!). So no need to worry about having 2TB of images being replicated!

First, thank you much for your work. I am probably on the way from lightroom to darktable, looking your (and others) videos and beeing testing around my needs. It's a hard way. But one thing concretely to this video: You are wondering about people who want that the RAW should look as near as possible the ooc-jpg. I am such a person. Why? I am normaly very happy with the JPGs of my fujis. And in the most cases i can leave them original. But sometimes i need raw-development (exp. heavy dynamic scene). My best way would be a mixed workflow in which i take mostly the JPGs and only the RAWs were i need them. The software should "see" the both files as "one image". But there is no software (or i did not found them) which can do this "on the fly". So with Lightroom i allways use the RAWs, but have more work, because i have to touch every RAW (at least with a preset) to get the "better look" which the JPGs have "automaticly". My dream would be: Shoting in JPG+RAW, taking both files to my imaging software (Lightroom or darktable), the imaging software should use and show only the JPG until i START EDITING an image. Then it should switch "automatic" to the raw file and from this moment show and work with this RAW file. Handling automaticly the metas (stars, colors, Collections, ...). This kind of behavior would save me (and i think a lot of others) tons of time.

K, so now I'm going through the 1 of the 3 videos you recommended. I want to set up the modules like you suggested for beginner darktable users... However, nothing looks like in the video. Keep in mind I am running 3.4.0... but the handover menu below only shows legacy or v3. I do see another hamburger menu at the top of the modules (to the right of them) that shows a bunch of presets and a preset manager. I get the feeling that will do what your explaining here somehow. Do you have a video on that manager? Also, do the modules only scroll with the wheel when I hover over the scrollbars on the side? Not when I hover over the actual module settings/parameters?

That floating window is new in v3.4 and I do cover it in one of those 3 videos (I thought it was the first one but maybe not). Correct, you need to use the right edge to scroll the module list. It certainly would be nice if the middle of the modules would scroll as well.

@@audio2u yes, because if you're moving sliders or entering values and then want to move on to another module you have to move the mouse to the right and "aim" for the scrollbars.... Oh well. I am a newbie in DT, and I want to migrate from LR, so I am playing with the program, trying to understand and learn how it works. One question ... In the "Import module", the option "Scan for Device" does not appear, DT does not detect when I connect my camera, nor when I insert a card, what am I doing wrong? (DT 3.4.1; Windows 10; Sony A57).

Thanks for the kind words. As for the "scan for device" option, I've never used it, so I'd have to go and look it up. I generally use a different app (on linux) for copying images from memory card to pc), and then import into darktable from there. This is due to darktable's inability to COPY the images from an external location to your local HDD at the time of import. This will however, change with the next version of darktable (due in July).

Bruce or Anyone - Have a question. I often choose my image crop in camera (3x2 vs 1x1 vs 16x9 for mine). I import into Darktable and the Lighttable view shows the crop, but when I open the image in Darkroom, the crop is removed. Additionally, lighttable now changes to the default raw image size of 3x2. If I am not paying careful attention I forget what my original intent was on location. Is this a darktable setting I changed, or maybe something in camera I goofed on, or perhaps i have lost my mind at it has always been this way.

@@GreenhornPhototaker Lou my "guess" is that your in-camera crops are intended for the display of in-camera jpeg files. Darktable is aware of that and displays those like you wanted (that is, cropped). However, when you start processing the "raw" image, darktable brings it in front of you in its native, uncropped form. As far as I know, no camera "crops" the raw file itself. As I said, this is just a guess.

@@bcelasun Thanks Bulent - I do believe you are correct. In hindsight, i recently updated to the latest Darktable version and I would bet at least one dollar that is when the import changed. It's unfortunate, i shoot landscapes almost exclusively and spend a painstaking amount of time choosing a composition to the crop. It is frustrating to lose it on import.
@audio2u
@audio2u 4 жыл бұрын
Maybe set your camera to shoot RAW+ jpg. That way, when you import all images into darktable, your jpg files will have the crop baked in. Then, you can use that as a reference for your RAW processing. And then, depending on your own thought process, you could discard the jpegs if you no longer need them.

@@audio2u It probably was. But once you know the move you don't really look what you are doing. I was searching on the lighttable view for a JPG filter a few times. No big bother though, most are raw anyway. So even if you use darktable for a long time it's good to watch newbie videos ;-)

If I'm not mistaken, you SHOULD be able to take your data.db and library.db files (on linux, these usually live under $HOME/.config/darktable) and copy those to your other file system's comparable directories, and it should all work. I THINK! :)

G'day Bruce, sorry, a bit late in catching up on this video (blame it on C-19 of course). Super video at a manageable pace, as usual, allowing me time to properly listen. But one really serious, indeed glaring, omission: you never discussed the bike, so I had to sit through all that raw processing guff, hoping to at least hear it running, and I got 0. Redeem yourself in the next video, please.
@audio2u

Haha! Apologies for that! The bike is awesome. Had it for 3 months now, and have just had the 10,000 km service done. I'll be doing about 38,000 per year on it. As for the sound, it's only running the stock pipes, but it is a silky smooth purr. I love it. I'll record some, and find a way to incorporate it into episode 81.

One of the issues with the darktable database is they embed the full path to the imported images. If a user wants to share that database across platforms such as Linux and MAC OS those paths will be different on each of those platforms. This is a huge plus for the Adobe Lighroom catalog in which I can share that same catalog between MAC OS and Microsoft Windows. Maybe there is a way around this with the darktable database. Just like the Adobe LRCAT file(s) you should also be backing up your darktable database and config file. This is especially important when darktable comes out with a new release and the database and/or xmp files need to be updated. A user can also choose to create a sub folder and move all the xmp files to that subfolder thus preserving them from any other photo editing applications that may change or corrupt them. You could even name the sub folder something like "darktable_xmp" versus "lightroom_xmp" or "ON1_xmp".

You won't be saving them as .ARW, as that it Sony's file extension (Alpha RaW). But darktable should read .CR2 files ok. I know it can't read .CR3 files yet, but that's because of things external to darktable.
