Prior to watching this video I had spent more than 10 hours, perhaps as much as 15 hours, watching/reading material from other sources, multiple times. That advanced my state of understanding of the filmic module from 'utterly & surprisingly bewildered' to ' familiarly and considerably bewildered'. The 30 minutes spent watching this video, with repeats, has now advanced my state to 'dangerous, possessing a little learning'. That is a considerable achievement, for which I have to thank you. Two key (for me, personally) factors in the effectiveness of your videos are the pace at which you present the information and the description of the why/what/when of the available sliders/options. I hope very much that the next part of your presentation of filmic will explain the application of the options associated with cycling through the graph views - especially the 'dynamic range mapping'.

Hi, thank you! I'm glad that the video helped amd appreciate the encouraging words 🙂. Yes, the graphs will be a big part of the next video or pyobably a third video dedicated to them.

Hello! I am learning DT bit by bit.. what tutorials enlightened you as well like this one?
@asquared8399 Жыл бұрын
@@drendelous Too many to list in the time I have available. This present author ('HAL') has published many tutorials, ranging from OK-ish to outstanding - just like about 10 other such KZbin creators. Some are really quite complex, such as those from Boris H. These require considerable concentration to follow but are highly rewarding in terms of the techniques you learn. dt is such a highly capable product that it needs a large investment of learning - it is worth the trouble, more so than with any other raw processing application I have used.

An interesting description of a highly technical module. Whilst the improvements in the first image were easy to see, sadly I could not see any improvements in the 2nd image. Maybe it's a limitation of the video. Thanks for the video.

Hi Berny. You are right. The highlight restoration is b very subtle. The effect might be more visible in other photos.

When reconstructing you should only need to fix RAW clipped pixels and if you turn on the RAW clipped indicator these will show through the mask, showing you where you need to set the transition.. very good video again.

Hi Stephen, That is a great tip 👍. Thanks!

Not really, no. At this point in the pipeline, you may have more than clipped raw pixels passed the white threshold, depending how the editing was done. The filmic reconstruction is meant to ensure smooth blending between clipped and valid areas, no matter why they clipped and how much.

Not sure how to react :) The teacher is correcting my homework - I hope that I didn't mess up too badly :) Thank you for the correction - I believe my and Stephen's confusion was in what the raw clipping warning shows. It only shows pixels clipped in the original raw file while we are trying to reconstruct clipped pixels that we might have introduced earlier in the pixel-pipe. Is that correct? But mainly thank you as well for the great job on darktable and the videos on the topic! It is really appreciated.

@@RawPhotographyTutorials Correct. The point is filmic comes very late in the pipe, and many things may have happened before (like raw clipped parts may have been already fixed or… worsened), so the raw clipping alert is not really relevant there. Just look at highlights, see if they blend organically into the valid areas, and take appropriate mitigation measures (bloom more or less, etc). You are welcome ;-)

Great 👍 - I will link to your explanation in the second part.
