I'm one of those people who thinks Darkthrone got better with age...more fun and oldschool, lots of memorable speed/power metal influenced parts.

In my view, it is not that simple. If one cannot appreciate or at least comprehend the absolute magnificence especially of their second album, then that certain four-letter abbreviation might come in handy. And the seemingly so sincere material by Isengard, oh Isengard... so sincere, supposedly simple and yet so bewitching! That this humble style of recording, meaning the actual recording process, seems to have been abandoned, that, to the lover of the true primitive that is me, was a mistake. That said, and although I am very hesitant to progress on their discography, spending lifetimes with the earlier releases, which I think that they appreciate, regardless of what some tempered commentaries might suggest, I did punctually have a listen here and there. An interesting aspect is that compositional elements, structures, techniques of the guitar, do not seem to be absent. However, there seems to be a tendency for those to be interwoven, or placed amidst, portions which, to me, seemed somewhat less convincing. There is a debate of whether this is intentional or due to an insufficiency in regards to a creative spirit... and it leaves me perplexed, eager to learn more about it but at the same time also hesitant. A murky place that is both repellent and intriguing. It must be damned. An example which seems to hint at both the beloveth spirit of Isengard being intact, and the mentioned aspect of less convincing portions, would be a certain Valkyrie. I do not like the initial and the final portion. Also, the, for a lack of a more technical term, harmonic guitar in these portions not only sounds modern but seems to stem from a modern playbook. In a commercial way. Talk about plasticity, and hypocrisy, questionmark.

2:16 to 3:13 is a hell of an arrangement. Grooves very hard ... and that fill at 2:43 ... indeed masters of the style.
