That was an excellent video. In my collection I have 'a lot' of early small capacity Hondas as well as the bigger fours, 125 to 450 twins and 350 to 500 fours and have always regarded the smaller cc bikes as the 'nicest' bikes to ride in terms of reliability, build quality and most importantly comfortable predictable handling and braking. Funnily enough I still use a 1979 CB400T as a hack to get to my storage units etc. It has the same engine as the CM, is still totally reliable at 115,000+ miles and performance is still excellent in modern traffic. I have only ever serviced it (every 5K), changed tyres and brake pads/shoes and coated the inside of the tank to stop corrosion. Of all the carburettor engines, I have never had problems with the Hondas unlike most others as just an occasional spray with Gumout or similar keeps them clear. As you say, a great bike for new riders plus still makes old gits like me smile 😄

This takes me back to my college days in the early 90s. I bought a '79 CM400T from a friend of my father's for $400. It had hard case saddlebags & a 3/4 fairing up front w/ a CB radio and cassette player. Looked like a mini-Goldwing. I stripped off all the accessories except the hard-side saddlebags, put some low-rise handlebars on and the bike became my daily commuter throughout college and several years after. I rode that thing through heat, rain, and snow, off-road fishing trips, dates, and solo road trips. That thing was indestructible and so damn reliable. I finally sold it to a guy buying his first mc for $1200. It had 89K miles on it without complaint.

Funny - my first bike was an 81 Cm400T. And I, too, kept adding stuff to it. There was little after market stuff so I wrote scour the junkyards for stuff that would fit. I added highway bars and pegs, a rear hard case and windshield... The local Honda dealership called it my Copper Wing

It was my first motorbike in 1990. Belonged to my father since 1980 but he did not use it. I had other bikes after but I still keep it in my garage. I found it pretty fast in acceleration and a fun to drive, at the beginning of my riding experience. I used to go on trips with plastic bottles filled with fuels in my back lack. I could drive around 110 km with a full tank so, after 60 km,I had to start looking for a petrol station. That was a nightmare. Very comfortable on the straight and a pleasure to be parked in town when you move away and turn your head for a look and say: she is so beautiful! In serpentine roads was acceptable if the pavement was smooth. Bumpy toads with turns needed careful driving for the stability of the rear, if you drove relatively fast.

'81 CM400E was my very first street bike and l loved it. I consistently got 81 mpg. I put about 7,500 miles on it, then bought a fully dressed GL500 Honda SilverWing. That was 35 years ago... Last week l bought my 3rd Honda - a 1994 Pacific Coast 800. I will never forget the CM400E though and how much joy it brought me

Wow, Lawrence, our minds really run together. LOL I have owned a Honda CM450E, 2 different Honda GL500's and still now have a 1997 Pacific Coast that I have owned for 12 years. That PC is my most favorite motorcycle that I have ever owned in 55 years. It is such a beautifully quiet gorgeous motorcycle to ride. I have always enjoyed trading rides and trying out friend's bikes. Once I got the PC that all changed as I am always reasonably certain that I am already riding the nicest bike. LOL

You can add me to the "owned both a '81 cm400 and a '97 PC800" club. Wish I had 'em both back. They were probably the most reliable transportation I ever owned. And the cheapest to operate as well. ( $6 to fill the pc800's tank at the time, then ride it all week. )

One of the first almost new bikes I bought - from a friend back in 1984 who bought it new and only had about 1500 miles on it. It was a 1982 CM400 same red and magenta as in the video - I was 22 and loved that bike!! I was still paying for flying lessons and couldn't afford a car. I sold it in 1987 for $750 still in pristine condition (I was then married, worked for a major airline, owned a home and used the money to buy a used freezer and a membership to a racquetball club - my total domestication was complete). Thanks for the wonderful memories!!

Last fall I bought my friend's grandpa's 81 cm400 Custom for 100 dollars because of health issues. It's my first bike and after spending the winter fixing it up, I finally got to start riding it this summer. It had this giant aftermarket windshield that I recently removed because it's shape would warp whatever was in front of me. I love this bike and it's been an awesome introduction to riding for me. The handlebars are something of note as you mentioned; they have a cruiser stance to them even though it's more of a cafe racer. Love the video!

I remember this bike well. I bought my 1981 CMT400 Honda which was new and what a joy to ride. It was Blue with lots of chrome. I loved the step up seat for two and step back handlebars which made it very comfortable for longer rides. My first bike I’ve ever owned with mag wheels. I traded in my 1976 Honda CB 360 L for it. The 400 cc was probably one of the best bikes I’ve ever owned and now wished I still owned or could find.❤️👍

That sounds better than it has any right to sound :D Man, I'd love to ride something classic one day. The oldest bike I've ridden was my first bike and it was a 2003 CB600f Hornet, so not really a "classic" bike. I would love to know how bikes used to feel like back then. Especially a bike like this one, that was born the same year as me XD

5:42 I bought my Honda CM400E when I was 16 about a year ago. And I just today bought ANOTHER to help restore my original. But with my original bike one of the previous owners had painted it a rally cool lime and dark green theme. I later joined a group for riders in my city and so happened the previous owner commented saying she also had a CM400 and sent a picture of the exact bike. So I found one of the original owners and they actually were the ones to paint it green!

My first motorcycle was a 1981 Honda CM400C. It was a very good motorcycle. I had it for one year and left it behind when I separated from my first wife. I had a blast ringing that little 400 out to red line in every gear. Even with the way the way that I rode it, the motorcycle still managed to get 60 MPG. Last I heard, my Ex gave the motorcycle away to someone who needed it for the parts. :(

Nice video👍🏻 I have a 1984 Honda CM400T Custom (beside a small windscreen its fully stock and original) I live in Denmark and I have been in Nordcap AND in Malaga when I was a hole lot younger😂 on that little thing. On the backroads and on the German autobahn and never had any problem what so ever. GPS topspeed is 150 km/h and up to 120km/h it fine, above that it gets a little windy. The fueltank holds 13 Liter incl 2 liter reserve. The average km per Liter is 19,5 (5,2 Liter per 100 km) The small fueltank can be a problem on the backroads in Sweden and Norway, but i keep two 2 liter fuel reserve cans in the sattlebacks. Best regards from Denmark.

Born in '65, my first street bike was Honda CM400T. Big chain but stretched it anyway. T was for touring. Small tank & living in N.W. Big Sky Country meant running out between stations. Never knew exactly what made it touring. No windshield, ferring, cruise control, lumbar support. Just looked and felt great to Cafe. I moved up & ride motorcycle number 14 currently, '05 FLHPI. Took it accross U.S. last summer.

I had exactly the same bike only in the 250 format, but it was physically the same bike but with sleeved down bores to make it a 250 for the UK "Learner Market" It felt big for a 250 and was roughly the same weight as the 400. But it was a real "Eye catcher" but not suited to our narrow winding roads, and sat bolt upright, you felt uncomfortable at anything over 45mph. But I loved the bike, and having both the Dream "Hawk" and SuperDream "SuperHawak" as known in the US. I would love to own any of them now. As I am an old man in my mid 60's. I'm looking at a '79 cm400t this Friday. New rider, just finishing MST. Not sure about this. I could do a late 2000s Ninja 250 - and there are lots of them on the used market - but I'm an older dude and leaning forward on a sports bike is hard on my back. I really don't know if buying this antique is a smart move. I just want a reliable bike to get around town. And I don't want to spend more time tinkering with it than riding. But I will look it over and give it a test ride.
@Darkvisor
@Darkvisor 3 жыл бұрын
Old bikes require some tinkering though. it's a good bike and honda is one of the most reliable brands but in your case I would suggest getting something newer within years 2000-2015. they run very good and less tinkering and doesn't cost much at all. Thanks for watching

It's a great bike. Light, so it's pretty fun. It's not fun at all with the stock handlebars though. I have a cm450 and it really came to life when I stuck some Daytona handlebars on it. The original handlebars are not fun for riding the bike, but they are also comfortable

I just got a Mint 1980 Honda CM400T motorcycle from my dad, hes been wanting to go on rides that are much further than we are capable of now, We ride on Clones of the old Honda Passports, 125cc engines from China. average about 150 miles a ride when we go out on them. Its the Red version of the CM400s that I have and cnt wait to get it ready to ride, itll be my first official motorcycle and which Ill be getting my license on and riding as often as I can lol. anyone have a comment on whats best to get replaced first as it is a 41 yr old bike now, as in fuses and other parts that are known to go bad on these things. oddly enough its exactly one month younger than I am so Im thrilled with owning something literally my own age, the headlight has just gone out today and I still need to replace a tube and do an oil change. thios video is making me itch with the riding fever and Im ecstatic as I watch you ride this thing lol

I have a blue 1981 CM400T. It has about 14,000 miles on it. I bought it new in 1983 from John Bryan in North Olmsted Ohio. I paid the sticker price of $1500. Everything is ok except I burned the stator up slightly, now the head light doesn't work. I tried to get another one but Honda had just quit making stators for that model 3 months prior. So that was 4 or 5 years ago. Now I have carpel tunnel, and hands go numb when I ride it.

Beautiful bike. My first street bike was a 1982 Honda CM400E . The first long trip for me I rode up to the mountains here in West Virginia. Totally a blast. Until I stopped at a friend's and sat down in a chair. Certain body parts that were numb started waking up painfully. Would have been nice if someone would have warned my about it. Lol.. when I got ride of my bike it had less than 4000 miles on it. I did something stupid I was 21 years old. Had a freak hot day in the winter and you can't keep a guy from riding . right? I was feeling alive passed a friend fast and Karma is a Bitch! I hit some cinders they put on the rode because it had snowed a few day's earlier. Yep you guessed it I put my bike down. I was damn lucky. I rode my bike home. Dumbest thing I did was not keeping my bike. Stay safe out there friend.

Ouch. Yeah I learned the hard way not to ride when I was a kid on my bmx. I slipped on some ice and hurt like hell, since then I never got on two wheels when it's winter =P I'm happy to hear that you didn't got hurt! Yeah sometimes we regret selling off things we really like. Maybe one day you will find one to buy again ;) Thanks for watching Walter and stay/ride safe!

I've often wondered if a oil cooler would help my 1981 400CM bike? They put one on the 1982 450 so that's why I'm wondering. Not finding any after market ones but I do maintain my bike with oil changes so maybe a cooler isn't needed? Any thoughts?

Loved the video! I thought this video was shot a decade ago, which in my opinion is a good thing. It somehow works. Thank you for recommending this bike. I got my motorcycle endorsement and can't wait to make some money to buy a motorcycle. What is the fuel consumption on this one?🙌🏾
@Darkvisor
@Darkvisor 7 ай бұрын
I'm happy to hear that you enjoyed my video =) Congrats on your license! Fuel comsumption for most bikes are around 0.5 liters / 10 km So i'm guessing its around there. You can google the specs online, but when it comes to fuel numbers, It very much depends on the rider and how good / fuel efficient he rides. I've had bikes that were known for being thirsty but for me the numbers wasn't near that because I usually ride a certain way which doesn't demand as much fuel. Thanks for watching Bryan.
