I once had an extremely... well, chaotic is an understatement, night. I was in hideout 3, very close to completing the game. I play on 'nightmare' difficulty, because I believe that is the only true way to evoke true fear. One night, I was attacked by all manner of creatures, beings, ghouls. I had to run throughout the base in the dark, having all the lights been sparked out by some mythical entity, running and pushing my way through all the shadows and horrors in the night. I eventually ran out of space to run. They had cornered me. I could hear them stomping throughout the base, and in my direction. I pushed my back as hardly as I could against the furthest wall and pulled out my gun, aiming it down the hallway. They were coming closer. I was nearly dead, having been caught off guard I didn't manage to restock on health supplies. Then.... daylight. I teared up. No horror game had ever had such an impact on me. I was safe for another day.

My first night in this game was terrifying. I stayed in the house, closed all the doors, and huddled in a corner, all the while listening intently for intruders. Much later in the night (early in the morning) I got the courage to check the house in case there was someone or _something_ in the house with me. I held my torch high, ready to swing at any possible threats. It took a while and a lot of coaxing myself to take each step, but I searched all the way to the front door. The front door that was *open.* Upon seeing this, I was terrified; I had somehow passed by whatever the hell had come through the door. suddenly, my vision turns yellow/red and the feint music that was playing morphs from a spooky ambiance to a terrifying suspense. But, before I knew it, the morning sun graces the forest, and I know that I am safe for the time being. Whatever had come into the house was gone, thankfully. Darkwood is the first game to ever evoke such a strong emotion from me. Every good horror game tries to give the player a sense of relief from time to time, but that first morning of Darkwood lifted the stress of the night just as easily as it had laid it upon me. I absolutely love it.

God this game, I only played a little bit at a friends. But the first night was stupid stressful. Got everything geared up adn tried to sleep, but found out you have to wait out the night. - Stayed in the bedroom, watching the one window I wasn't able to barricade in time. I'm hearing stuff move outside. - My door starts getting knocked on.. I look and the door opens. Freaking me out. - I look out the window and see a blood-red glow as I assume I'm fucked. - Relief.. as Day 2 begins...

I know it may be a bit lame because there is a way cooler story about someone barley surviving one night in nightmare but here is mine. I survived three nights so far and never visited the underground tunnelns, nor did I go deep into the forest to meet the wolf man. On day 4, with a board full of nails and a fresh torch, I finally felt ready to go into the dephts of the forest. Before that moment I thought the creature on the cover was just for the cover, something I would never encounterbefore endgame but after passing the ruin of the house and going into a former blocked room it stormed at me. The board struck it down in a couple of hits but still left me unnerved. Something I've only seen running from me so far just attacked me. The door to the rest of the forest opened and the screams of these creatures filled my ears. I just strated running to a safehouse that was marked on my map but always saw the sillouette of these creatures just mere meters behind a tree. Even reaching, boarding up and lighting the safe house didn't give me a safe feeling. After a hallucination I got through injecting mushrooms a second time I just had 2 hours to nighttime. The waiting was more horrible then the actual night. I always kept my eye on the only open entry to the room and beside the rumbling of the creatures in the woods there was nothing right until 4 am. All of a sudden dark chants and a swarm of birds filled the air and before I realized what was going on the door in the neighboring room swung open. Something that I can only describe as a screaming sack of meat chased me through the room. The only instinct I had in that situation was to run so I bolted out of the room, "feeling" the meatsacks breath as I ran past him. The voices from the dark called for me, and the meatsack pushed everything in it's path away to get me. I was in the last room and the only choices I had were to run out into the forest or make a run past the creature again as soon as it enters the room but in that second, this melody I'm listening to right now started faintly and I knew that relative safety was just seconds away. In that moment the sack entered the room, already gaping it's vertical mouth to get me but before it could move in my direction any further, the screen turned white and I had survived the 4th night. I awoke in the kitchen with the merchant waiting for me to wake up but even the message that he had 150 respect for me wasn't enough. I just set there and stared of into nothing while this song filled my head. I know it's just the beginning of the game but this was an experience I never before had in a game. No other horrorgame ever left me feeling exhausted after 5 minutes of pure dread. If you're someone who thinks about playing or buying this game but is unsure, please give it a try. If my story sparked only a little bit of curiosity in you, submerge yourself in the world of darkwood. It is worth every second

This was definitely a game I had a blast playing and want to recommend to other people who like survival games like RE and don’t starve but also can put up with more difficult games like stalker and dark souls. Through out all the horror games I've played the past few years, some were scary, some had decent jumpscares, others very good atmosphere that have brought fear but only for a second or a minute. Darkwood has been the only horror game the past decade to truly terrify me, from the overcautious nature of every sound, step or breaking branch. The darkness of night where every minor thing scared the life out of me. No jumpscares or cheap fear tactics, its ruthless, unforgiving world and atmosphere reached deep within me personally. Darkwood is so damn interesting in its world that I kept playing to see what's next or explore, but of course it was so damn scary it was hard to push forward until I made my curiosity outweigh my fears. Such a masterpiece on every front.

Tense before-dawn music kicks in, you hear 2 chompers making their way into your room. You fight them fiercely, but constantly on back-foot. As hard as the game is, especially on nightmare, and as much as the devs profess to not hold your hand, this game is actually very well intentioned and subtly guides you in ways that slowly urge you on even if you don't realize it. I didn't realize until later that after you pass the first area, the game doesn't entirely force you to start from the very beginning of the game when you die, but just back to the beginning of the current area. That and slowly becoming more assertive and aggressive during the night attacks, going guns blazing and fighting for your life every step of the way, and being rewarded with enough reputation to buy back the resources you spent with the trader, and then some.

@@plugshirt1762 Es que la canción está hecho también para eso, una parte presenta esa seguridad de que nada malo va a pasar, pero también tiene un tono trágico, el cual representa esa sensación de qué eventualmente los monstruos van a volver

If you miss getting that immersed, try Hyper Light Drifter if you haven't. Idk if the game will be your cup of tea, but you might like the atmosphere.

@Florero Afloreril thank you! I'll check it out. (Just got Blasphemous, really fun but not especially immersive, more arcade-esk imo)

I do believe Darkwood is the first Terror-themed game. Horror-themed ones usually have jumpscares and sudden noises. In Darkwood, you hear them. They're outside, they try to get in, to get you. You can tell they know you're in there, but turning off the lights will lead to your doom. You are alone, and you know they will come, it's only a matter of where, and when.

Yeah, i wonder if the devs will ever make another game, in this horror vein or another. Either way, i presume it'll be hard to top Darkwood. But i am still curious X)

Stayed up the whole night till 6 am and just got called into work. I’ll be listening to this again on my hour long walk there. Made it through another night and got to watch a beautiful morning arise and they recently asked me to become manager there. Things are looking up but that doesn’t mean the grind should stop or slow down. I must keep going put in hard work towards the direction I want. This is a similar feeling I get from surviving the night in the game and a soundtrack this beautiful will always give me motivation. Fear is apart of life if you didn’t have it you could not be brave or alive for that matter.

if you like the Darkwood ost, you'll probably love to listen to cosmo sheldrake's album "Wake Up Calls" it only has one lyrical song and the rest are really eerie and beautiful bird themed songs. They have such amazing sound!

I'd give a lot, not everything, but alot, to play this game for the first time again. I miss fearing the unknown, now i know what, when and were death is; How to avoid it. Shit i've never felt this way about any other game. No other game had a learning and mastering experience quite as this, indie Polish game.

I really like this song, moreso than RE7's saferoom theme (my previously favorite track like this), the reason for this being that while the saferoom theme says "it's okay, you can rest for as long as you need, you're safe here. you'll have to go out and face the horrors again at some point, but for now, you're safe." but this theme? it doesn't say anything. it's too tired, too worn, just like you are, but you know you have to keep going. it's the theme of dusting yourself off, dressing your wounds, and taking a deep breath.
