I have a cat that likes to play with flying squirrels. He has never harmed one that I have seen. In fact, he has made friends with one. Nearly every night I see him in my security camera hopping around in the yard. First few times I saw it I went out to see what was going on. Sure enough, he had a flying squirrel. To say I went into a panic is putting it mildly. Several nights in a row I went out THINKING I was saving a flying squirrel until I realized, the darn thing kept coming back down to the cat instead of the cat going up to the little fellow. This has been going on for MONTHS now. A few nights ago I saw him in the camera laying on my porch bathing the darn thing. Never a dull moment around here folks.

When we lived in New Bern, NC we had a female Flying Squirrel that used to come to our bird feeder on our deck. We ended up making the feeder function just for the squirrel and she would let us look at her through the plexiglass. After awhile we could tell she was nursing. She ended up bring her babies to the feeder and we could watch them all. It was so exciting for that spring!!!!

I’m 74 yo and I have only seen one flying squirrel in my lifetime. Let me just say, he was very much alive! He had wound up in our garage, too. Two brooms later, he was back outside in the live oak trees where he belonged. He was fascinating. Beautiful animal but did not resemble our gray squirrels at all. My boys were excited to see a flying squirrel in our garage. Their Dad and I were not nearly as excited. Thanks for the up close look at such a cute animal.

Gemma!! I am so happy to see you finally focus on the wonderful tracking/hunting traits of Dachshunds. I have raised them for over 30 years, field trials, earth dog tests, and showing. I remember seeing your collection of hunting videos with the kids a few weeks ago and you showed Gemma tracked one of them.

When I was three years old I would go along with my Dad and help clean our small country church. Now in the closet where the cleaning supplies and tools were kept there were flying squirrels in the back. I had fun getting them to launch out into the basement of the church. That was practice for repeating that on Sunday morning and getting all the little girls in Sunday School to squeal and run. I got a talking to and kept a solemn face until the speaker left the room, and then it was roll on the floor laughing. It got where I fed the squirrels hazelnuts and acorns and treated them like pets.😂❤

When I was a small child, my dad went out to cut up a tree that had fallen in our yard the night before. My sister was with him and they found a nest of three newborn flying squirrels. No fur, eyes closed. Dad set up an old tabletop grill base with a screen top and a heat lamp. My sister did her best but we lost 2. The third little one, a girl we called Gertie, thrived and was a beloved member of our household for almost 10 years. She even moved houses with us. She lived in a homemade cage in our den during most of the day, but at night, she came out and ate nuts in my Dad's dress shirt pocket as he cracked them after he got home from work. She loved pockets and was the sweetest thing. Thank you for bringing that memory back! Beautiful creatures!
