Great idea (collab). I am not well to do and rather than used Epiphone restoration upgrade was thinking this kit might be the way to go so that I can have more to spend on a better amp. Not sure which is best: Better guitar > lesser amp or, lesser Amp < better Guitar.

The results of this finish job were superb!! Absolutely beautiful. It was this series of videos, Darrell, and Brads that got me into building kit guitars. Building them, brought my confidence level up, in regard to doing setups, and simple repairs. This then led to now several years later, doing setups, and simple repairs for people, sort of as a retirement hobby. I don't charge much, because I'm not doing it as a job to make money. I just do it to keep busy. Plus it keeps my skills up, and its something I found out that I actually enjoy doing! 🎸🎸 😎

Found your channel from the customer reviews on Solo Guitars. A lot of reviewers said they learned how to properly finish a guitar from your channel so here I am! And then I see it’s a crossover project with Darrel Braun, how cool! Great work! I’m going to order the Solo LP p90 kit for me and my son to make a “Gibson White Falcon.”
@BradAngove2 жыл бұрын
Nice! I hope your build goes well.
@Bloosee6 жыл бұрын
I'm glad Solo took your suggestion, I sanded thru my veneer in a couple spots, both on the top and headstock.
@BradAngove6 жыл бұрын
Damn. I know the sealer helps during shipping, but I’m glad they were able to forgo in on the veneer on the newer kits.
@Bloosee6 жыл бұрын
I would think they could forego the sealer on the whole body, that's the worst part for me, sanding all that sealer off to get down to bare wood. I've purchased other bodies that were from China with no sealer.
@BradAngove6 жыл бұрын
I’m sure they could, but I don’t know if it would result in some product loss. Once they see how this next batch goes I’m sure they’ll consider it.
@fl6stringer6 жыл бұрын
Nice looking guitar but I am a little confused at the intent to have spalted only to hide most of it under black...
@BradAngove6 жыл бұрын
Most of it?
@fl6stringer6 жыл бұрын
Well, technically, yes. Why not do to the back same as front? Was it a conscious decision? No criticism, just questioning because the guitar is quite nice looking. My personal preferences made me do it!
@BradAngove6 жыл бұрын
Oh, I see what you mean. I thought you meant we were hiding most of the spalted maple under black. The back is a 3 piece mahogany body that didn’t look as good. It’s also a darker colour. We considered mirroring the burst on the back, but I didn’t think it would look as good.
@TheScottJeter5 жыл бұрын
Darren chose a tobacco burst pattern, similar to one available on older Gibson Les Pauls (new ones too...). With the back being three parts and not matched, it makes sense to do it in a solid color. WIth the tobacco burst using black around the edges, carrying the color to the back looks nice. The stain on the front absolutely brings out the spalted grain. My personal choice would have been more of a cherry burst, and satin finish for the back/sides. And maintaining the binding.
@jeffthompson18695 жыл бұрын
There is a way of staining and then sanding back that can make the top pop. Put dark brown, blue, or black stain down. Sand - the spalted maple pattern jumps out. The colors are fine. The burst is great. It's a very old - tried and true method of adding extra character to the wood. My color choice would be different - just out of personal taste - but it looks lovely once it was finished.

Awesome Job! I don't know if you tried it. But I found that using those plastic colorful foam floating tubes you can get at a Dollar store or Walmart. Makes a good sanding block for doing the curves around the edges of your guitar, just cut them down to the size to fit your hand. roll sanding paper around it and tape it off . It goes over the curves pretty good.

I'm obsessed with Daphne Blue and Surf Green finishes, so I always wonder if there are any wood types that can't be finished in those two beautiful hues(Spalted maple, walnut, mahogany...etc.)? Darrell sent me FYI and I'm glad he did, fascinating channel...
@BradAngove6 жыл бұрын
They can all be finished in those colours, but some are easier than others for opaque finishes. For example, spalted maple and mahogany are quite porous. This makes them a more challenging substrate in which to get a smooth finish because they absorb more paint than many other woods.

Why not sand between final coats to get rid of the orange peel on there? You can see definite bumps and ridges in the finish. I am sure you could have made it look straighter if you had spend time sanding

With a poly finish like this you generally sand it flat after the final finish. Not between coats.
