It's a personal taste, but this is one of the best sounding (to my ears) guitar you have played. Gust fantastic clear and lively but lush tones out of this guitar. Of course your playing would make any guitar sound beautiful. But the sound of this is really special imo

There are a decent amount of archtops with P90s and Charlies on them, and those are single. I'm sure the funky patent era archtops from the '60s have them too.

That Guitar is absolutely sweet! Vox made some really great Guitars back in the day and it looks like they've only gotten better. I still have an early 1970's Vox Spitfire that has held up very nicely over the years.

I can't be the first one to mention this in the comments, but my dad has an Epiphone Riviera with the 3 P90's and the control scheme for that one is remarkably similar to this guitar - perhaps even the same. It's been too long since I've played it, so I can't say for absolute sure, but it is very very similar if not maybe even identical. His Riviera has the Bigsby as well. So, presumably different pots and wires, different tone woods, I believe, and of course different manufacturer and country of origin, but it seems to me that the only super duper ultra major difference is in P90-style singles on the Epi vs non-P90-style, vaguely Fender-ish singles on the Vox. As such, I would really LOVE to see a direct comparison between the two guitars! I'll have to go looking for one! Even so, I'd been curious to know what this guitar sounded like and now I have. It's definitely a unique and neat guitar! 🍻 Great vid as always!! Thanks!!

Vox always does interesting stuff! Anyone remember the Virage? It had a curved, semi hollow body, came in an ES style and a Les Paul style, and it had triple coil rail pickups that could be split many different ways and had independent controls.
@QuirqUK
@QuirqUK 3 жыл бұрын
I used to lust after the ES one though it was way out of my affordability. I was inspired enough though to discover that P-Rails existed and I fitted them to my Les Paul. One day I'd love to fit triple P-Rails in my SG Deluxe, which has a middle pick-up volume control in the toggle switch! I'd love to fit them to my ES-style guitar but they won't fit the P90 slots! It's a SA503TVL with triple P90s, very similar to the Vox here.

From Leo: Looks like a great guitar, it comes in several pickup options. That is the same stamp on the back of the head stock as my Washburn Idol Deluxe, which is a very well made guitar that has held up perfectly for 22 years. I can believe the workmanship on that VOX is going to be excellent. At the $1400 price point, the VOX is in some serious competition. I have a 2008 VOX SDC 33 that I really enjoy, but it was priced 50% too high during a severe recession in the USA, and the line faded soon after. Too bad we lost the technology of the VOX Coaxial P-90's. They are the only hum free P-90's I have experienced that do not noticeably hurt the sound. I hope it does well.

Some semi-hollow guitars did have 3 p-90s, but the usual 3-pickup set up that you might find on a Gibson Custom (neck, middle+bridge, bridge on the 3 way). But that means you can’t play through the only middle… on this you could since all three picjups have volume controls, or even run all three at the same time (my favorite strat mod is 7 way with neck+bridge or all 3 at once.)

I just gave my younger son my 1960 Univox Custom slimline hollowbody (floating bridge, Bigsby-style vibrato) with two single-coil pickups. Sounds kind of like a Hagstrom; the pickups could use rewinding, at least the bridge. Epiphone Casinos (P-90s) have been around forever too. I do like that Vox, though. The two-outside-pickup tone reminded me a bit of Laika and the Cosmonauts. :-)

Beautiful guitar! Love the Bigsby on it! Sorry, not a huge fan of the tones. I think the Inlays are Abalam not Abalone. Thats why, if you look closely at all of them they have lines in them (because Abalam is laminated Abalone shell). Its cheaper, but made straight and flat (easier to work with), even Martin uses Abalam sometimes. I own a Sigma DT41, and its what prompted me to look into Inlays, mine have very faint lines as well. @@nazmoking3171 Yeah, I guess he didn't cover it in the video but the pickup selector switch is a 3-way switch that just effects the neck and bridge pickups, the middle pickup is "always on" so to speak. So to just hear the middle pickup, you have to turn down the volume on both the neck and the bridge pickups, that way the middle pickup will be soloed. To be honest, I always keep the middle pickup off (volume off) because I prefer the sound of the bridge and neck pickups without the middle pickup.

A nice, short & sweet review. What a surprise. While it has single coils, it comes close to a strat but not quite the quack. The clean neck (with the middle pu) sounded a lot like my Sheraton II (late 80s) that I added a vintage neck and super hot bridge to in coil split neck mode. Though whammy bars are not my taste, the Bixby really looks nice on the blue burst. Definitely worth considering.

This reminds me a lot of the Yamaha SA503TVL: modern take on the 335 with triple P90s, volume for each, single tone and two three-way toggles to get all the sounds. Oh, plus a Bigsby 🙂 I'd love to fit P-Rails for maximum tonal variety, but sadly they won't fit (humbuckers into P90-shaped holes). That would make it a lot like an older Vox, the Virage DC that I used to lust after years ago.

Vox did a great job on the Bobcat. It is almost identical to the original 60's version. Even the PU's look exactly the same. That said I expect the fit and finish is even better now. Old ones sell for a fortune too. I expect the new ones will hold their value much better than anything in their price range and will eventually creep up in value as well. In short they have a 'cool' factor that competitors in there $1400.00 USD price range just don't have. Great guitar if you tend to do a lot of flatpicking. I often transfer things I wrote on an acoustic to electric and this guitar is ideal for that.

I thought about getting a Harley Benton of Firefly semi hollow and putting a single coil in the neck just to see what it sounds like.

False advertising here Darrell! It's not a Hollowbody electric guitar, but rather it is a Semi-Hollowbody electric guitar! You see, I am actually playing through a real Hollowbody electric guitar right this moment and I'm not happy to see the "'Ole Bait and Switch" pulled on me. Let the guitar speak for itself and indeed it sounds fantastic. A different tone, and a very likable tone. Actually. I really like the version without the Bigsby.

That is the brightest sounding semi hollow body that I have ever heard

Uh. The "twang" they referred to in early rockabilly and country was a reference to the bright, trebly sound of the single-coils in all those early hollowbodies.

@@Chuck-Bob yes and no. A twang is different then brightness. For comparison check take a thinline telecaster and compare it to the bright tone from this semi hollow body.

Well, you do get a different thin and trebly from single coils than you do P90s, or Dynasonics, or lipsticks. They all have some slightly different characteristics, that's true.

So far I like the dynasonics the best, though they're definitely noisy. But I still haven't ever had anything with lipstick pickups.

It is an interesting tone for sure. Not quite strat or tele single coil, but not P-90 sounding either. If it were mine, I think I would use a Freeway 3+3 switch for different pickup pairings and then take 3 of the pots and make them stacked concentric so that each pup had its own volume and tone control and make the fourth pot a master volume. It would open the tonal combinations up immensely and would also allow for the middle pickup to operate as a stand alone as well as being dialed in with all 3 running simultaneously. I know it sounds ludicrous to take an $1800 guitar, tear it apart, and completely rearrange its electronics, but I think it has far more potential just waiting to be tapped into.

Ball park price of this beast ? S66 sound good , wonder why they didn't send the Bobcat V90 with the P90's ? Does the Bigsby put it out of tune , when using it with respect ? 👍🏾
