Could you swap a hammond tank into this amp or would you need to make it work with lots of mods?
@liveconcerts75503 жыл бұрын
@@ElJuicetin Tube amps have tubes (valves) to produce sounds. They are heavy, often expensive but often rated better sounding when hot. Others are solid state and modeling amp (often referred as digital). The quality of these have improved markedly. Most people feel they are very close to tubes amps these days: they are light, often cheaper.
@GarryWan6663 жыл бұрын
Justin Huge difference. Most of the time a tube amp sounds better, and distorts much more naturally, think of it like a physical distortion vs solid state amps which have digital distortion. Besides, a tube amp is usually much louder than solid state amps. A 5 Watt solid state amp is perfect for practice at home with a controllable volume. On the other hand a 5 watt tube amp would usually be much louder, and needs volume/loudness in order to distort. In that case a attenuator is needed for the tube amp to distort but still maintaining low/desired loudness. On many tube amps that have a master volume switch, it doesn’t sound great at all when having the gain at 10 but the master at 1, it still won’t distort that much with the master down(according to the Marshall origin 50H I had) Currently I am using 2 tube amps, a 20Watt Marshall Plexi and a Marshall origin 5C. It is already too loud at 5 Watt, and it is still loud at 0.5 Watt with the Marshall Origin, but not as loud as at 5 Watt which ear-protection should be used. On the other hand I also have a Blackstar ID Core 100 Stereo which is a digital amp, and it is fantastic to use late at nights, I could have maxed out distortion + reverb at a controllable volume. So to summarize, a tube amp OFTEN sounds better and louder

Mine came with crap tubes, but they weren't going to stay anyway. Re-bias, new pre and power tubes, MojoTone British Vintage, extension 10" Bruce Weber blue AlNiCo cab. It's great as is, and it's a low budget modder's dream. I was able to beg, borrow, and eBay some somewhat coveted NOS tubes [Mullard, Tung-Sol, Sylvania] for my 5W SR and my 15W. I got rid of all my other guitar amps except my old Hughes & Kettner I gave my son, my keyboard amp, and my wife's bass amps. Careful of the voltages, tube amps can kill, capacitors can retain a charge for a long time, and it's always cheaper to ask a pro than to buy a casket or pay for a hospital visit. This time they wouldn't take it back. Had to dispute with credit card company. Three months later and an independent eval by a local music shop, the credit company reversed the charges for good after Monoprice disputed the claim 3x. They sent a pickup and it went back. Two months later a box showed up at my front door. Oh jeez, they sent another one. I checked to see if they'd charged my card again. Nope. I waited for another month and still no charge. Ok, I finally opened the box and plugged the (third) amp in. Surprise! No weird buzz or distortion. Amp was great. Been using it ever since and they didn't recharge my card. Still, I probably wasted about 20 hours getting to that point. Hopefully the QC is better on these.

Got the amp home, pulled and re-seated the tubes and BOOM, it works!!! If I’m being honest, the drive channel is fairly useless, it sounds artificial, if that’s makes sense… but… the clean channel is incredible and takes pedals very well. Add-in the effects loop and other features, and it’s absolutely worth $500 for someone looking for a viable tube amp for under $1k.

@Scoaster863 жыл бұрын
It's all completely subjective. I have once directly compared a Seventy 80 to a GM25 Greenback, and I personally have strongly preferred the Greenback. Those are two very differently voiced speakers, and the Seventy 80 sounded too scooped for me. But do I think it's a bad speaker? No, I'm sure it has it's strongsuits, it just doesn't fit my taste. While I'm sure that the price tag also has to do with it's bad reputation (I love how some people look at a "cheap" price tag, like it's a bad thing. I mean as long as the product delivers, it's always better to spend less...) but I guess It's reputation is also due to it's voicing just not appealing to the masses. Many people want that classic british mid-focused sound, which it's just not suited for, so it gets a bad reputation by these people. But for people who like very modern scooped high-gain sounds, it might be a great and very affordable option. The funny thing is, in videos demoing the Seventy 80 it always sounded fine to me, like it could be just what I was looking for. I can imagine that many people shared this experience of liking it in videos, and then disliking it when they actually play one

@@Scoaster86 I have 10"/12" greenbacks, a Creamback and Celestion blues and the gold alnico across my amps. I agree, I prefer those too. Its way better than the stuff I had years ago when I started playing... and certainly doesn't deserve the rep it has. Chassis pics. Gut shots. Let's see the internal wiring & build. Obviously it's an all circuit board mounted tube situation but it'd still be nice to see how clean or sloppy it's put together. The devil is in the details.

I got one but it wasn’t working right got a extra speaker cab too. Kept the speaker but sent the amp back. I will get another head later for it . I like the 100 amp one you showed. Using the speaker V 30 with a Marshall origin 20 for now also hook it up to the Mono SR20 watt too. Got that though you too . Great knowledge from your channel . Keep it up and thanks .

Nice video Darrell....Stage Right(Monoprice) Yet again has put out a decent quality product, that to me warrants purchasing if your in the market for such an item. ""POINT""--The $250-$350 dollars saved alone is a no brainer lol... and would also possibly get you say... a new pedal,,,looper,,,or multi effects processor as well. Love the 2 channel EQ's and the overall sound wasn't shabby to say the least. When you pulled out those JJ's...i was like WHHHATTTT???????? lmao...WELP. Enjoy Darrell....Informative video as usual...Stay Safe ROCK ON and ...PEACE !!!!

IDK if you played the spark amp lately but they put in a few more amps, and a Guitar EQ and a Bass EQ, and a Klon overdrive pedal. The EQ really boosts up the cleans in two updates on your smart phone.

great video but just advising everyone, it is very hard to judge how good an amp sounds when its playing through a youtube video. before you buy an amp definitely try to hear the real thing.

Right. It can sound good in someone’s hands, but you can sit down with it and totally not vibe with how it feels. That’s my experience with the fender blues jr amps.

These are sold through monoprice, you literally can't try before you buy unless you have a friend who bought one without trying it.

crank the master and use the channel volume. works well with the bright switch, and use pedals for reverb and gain

Great review Darrell. Sorry but I can't say that the JJ Tubes are great. Why. I am an independent Guitar and Amp repair guy. (Edwards Guitar and And Amp Repair). While the JJ preamp tubes are OK . The JJ Power tubes are not OK. I have had to repair many amps using JJ Output Tubes where a tube failure caused damage to the amplifier circuitry (burnt components) . Often when the JJ Power Tube fails the internal elements can short together and damage the amplifier. I believe this due to poor construction techniques at the factory in China. I have not witnessed this problem with other brands of Power Tubes . Leave it to the Chinese to take the "We can make it cheaper" mantra to a notch or two below being acceptable. Not meant to offend anyone.

Yeah, I watch your channel and like it. I wonder how you feel about this amp 2 years later. Do you look at your old videos for responses? I bought one, the combo version. I've used it very little on stage, mostly I use a floor Line 6 pedal and go direct to a PA but some gigs need a real amp. I noticed that switching channels there a slow fade or dropout before the next channel comes up to volume. That is bad. I also noticed that now the reverb is always on no matter what i do with the Hosa switch I bought to do that. Even though the reverb lights up and off, it's still just always on. Also the reverb is pretty weak and not great at all. I tried using the amp with a pedal board and the 4-cable method. Compression, distortion and wahwah effect going to front of the amp input and modulations like vibrato, flanger etc to the efx loop. But very strange stuff is happening. The amp will be playing fine with the pedal board. I standby, and then plug a guitar just straight in front and ... nothing. Then later I tested all cables, all good, unplugged the loop, and tried it again it would work... or not. I tried unplugging the Hosa channel switching pedal (trs cable). It seemed it's now allowing me to simply plug in a guitar and the amp will simply work. But will it continue to function on my next gig? I think there's some major cutting corners with the electronics in this amp. I wish I felt now like I got a bargain, but I don't. Yes it sounds good when it's running on all cylinders. The amp has a lot of smart features especially the separate eq for both channels. So... I need something affordable but RELIABLE too. IDK..

I'll get the SR or the Bugera V55 infinium. The only upgrade I've seen necessary is changing out the tubes and that's only if they're not operating properly, otherwise I'll wait until they go out. Any other mod is based on personal preferences and is very objective. Only you know the sound your trying to get. I have no problem with the SR or Bugera as is with no mods. I've had the SR 15 watt tube amp for a few years, no mods, no problems and great as is.

Great review! I have also enjoyed your other reviews of Stage Right amps.I have the 15 watt version. Fully modified it, Tung-Sol pre & power tubes, Belton 3 spring reverb tank and a 12" WGS Reaper speaker. It's a little Beast. Is there enough room to install a 15" speaker and a full/long reverb tank? FYI, for a Hot Minute Mono Price was selling the 50 Watt Combo Tube Amp for $399! Wish I would had pulled the trigger.

The comments on the weight on these amps remind me of when my stepfather bought an old valve combo with a 15" speaker which was ridiculously heavy. It took the two of us more than a dozen goes in terms of carrying it to make the half mile journey from the local music store to our house at the time. Seriously, we should have booked a taxi! That thing sounded great but just did not do quiet.

Cool story! Electrovoice has a 12 inch speaker that has a 16 pound magnet assembly, not to mention a super heavy cast housing. I know Joe Bonamassa uses them, but that weight is ridiculous!

Don't remind me about heavy Amps being a 'good thing' please ! Way back I was shifting huge 2 x 15 Dual Concentric 200W Reflex Cabinets, etc as part of my gear and I swore that I never wanted to do that again after we got regular Roadies to do the lumping work ... Still, I do know that quality well-made gear does tend to weigh more, so I understand that necessity ... Maybe one day Amp gear will be made of ultra-light hi-tech materials like Carbon-fibre to make them weigh less, with clever baffles, etc to keep the solidity of the sound output ??? Modern players are so lucky that Amplification technology has got so much more practical these days and don't have to perch their 100W Tube Heads on top of a pair of 4 x 12 Cabinets and suchlike. I'd blow most young players minds to show them an original weighty and large Copycat machine with 8 recording heads and a tape going around just to get echo ... now all in a small pedal ! Those were the days ..???😂

@@vorpalblades yeah, thats a valid point. Plus, in order for them to be sub $1000.00, they would have to lower quality to the point it would hurt their reputation. It would cool though.

Great Amp! excellent review. The only tube amp I ever owned was a Kustom 150 and I don't believe I've ever owned an amp with better tone, however, as you stated, the tradeoff is that they are heavy.

Great video sir. Nice anp. It would make a great blues or blues rock amp by itself, or with a boost like a TS. With the clean channel and a cool distortion pedal it could be a three channel amp. Great review sir.

For price & features it is very close to the Bugera T50 having the same 50 watts. I bought one of the Bugera T50's and sent it back two days later. On the clean channel it didn't have as much volume as my 15 watt Fender unless you turned the gain to 5+ which imho no longer sounded clean. I'm tempted to give one of these a try.
@yomommaahotoo2643 жыл бұрын
Aha.....a fan onto the power tubes- exactly what I added to the inside of the screen blowing onto the EL84"s in my SR 15 watt combo amp. This addresses excessive heat building up inside the chassis which should extend the life of the electronic components.

I just picked up the sb20 head and Vintage 30 cab. Sweet! It uses Chinese (Sino) preamp tubes and JJ 6L6's. The Sino have a bit more gain if that's your thing. Substantial transformers. OPT has a 3.4K primary. The PCB looks like a weird clone of a JVM205H. Heckova deal!!!

By the Way, the New Blues Jr. Like the Sonic Blue. Has one plug for the reverb and one for a fat feature Which acts as a Overdrive control.
