He is a REAL MAN! Admits his mistakes and made the change. These moments happen to us all. The defining moment is when you wake up and decide to change for the better. So many will never admit those mistakes and never decide to change. I can totally relate to Darren. Being in his shoes drinking every night at the bar. One day I finally woke up and said "no more"! You're the man, Darren! Good luck and stay strong! Red Wings for life!!

Met him in a mall in Calgary when he was playing for the flames. He was with his family and had no problem signing a jersey for me. Still on my wall today.

Matt Davidson-Hey buddy.. I shook this mans hand at McNichol's arena in March of 1999, and he was so gracious. I even had on an Av's jersey on(sorry).. I just loved this dude(because I'm Irish, too). McCarty is an awesome human being, period. Not easy to find a real man like Darren, very rare.

He's my age. I'm also 41 and look at this bizarre situation: I never knew until watching this that Darren struggled with addiction like me. I must say, however, that alcoholism is a horrible addiction so are drugs, but I was systematically destroying myself. It was horrible. I'm over it now don't worry, but the dreams of solace and the interruptions of my addictions continue to haunt me. His book sounds like really good therapy for me. He's written a book Avery's written a book. Hmm. The literature world is getting interesting!

@benjaminblakemitchner83657 жыл бұрын
Thomas that's great I'm glad you've been dry for 20 years that's really good. I need to fix the liquid problem and it's a double edge sword because I'm violently ill with a bad cold now and I've been told the best thing to do is have a lot of fluids, but I can't overdue it. I also have parents who sent me away to a penal colony group home and think murdering their son is funny. Maybe I'll get lucky and they'll die soon.

What I love about the Wings (amongst many things) is that there is practically nowhere in the country that the wing's have no fan's. I'm a Detroiter (burbs). I was in Austin Texas, I took a long walk with a friend around the Austin area. Great blues band's, and the smell of steaks burning at the bars. (seein the sights) I had my MaCarty Red wing's jersey on. People driving by would honk and other's would wave and yell .. YAAAA MCCARTY !!! GO WING'S. He was my all time favorite player. He motivated me to stick out a job that I hated, JUST by hearing him on "Drew & Mike" every morning. I could get through my worst day, as long as I got my daily dose of Drew, Mike, and "MAC" !!!!!!! And who could forget the "Mick?" Bingo bango Katie Bar the Door

Darren's story is not at all uncommon in big time pro sports.The other pro sports guys have trouble too,football is brutal but being an enforcer in the NHL is the toughest job in all of pro sports,imho. God Bless you Darren,and good luck to you!

I was at the Grand Rapids Griffin game when he scored that hat-trick! I didn’t even know he was going to be there! He also had a fight and the Grand Rapids the next day Showed the tooth of the player that he was fighting in mid air as his punch was going through his face!
