I am 40 now and it's still a part of me I have never really properly explored as I grew up to feel shame for my feelings. I am in a very dark place at the moment with depression and anxiety. I had to come back to this track and let you know how much I appreciate you taking the chances to make songs like this, Bombs Up In My Face, Hot Tub Blues, The Only One, etc. This album had a few songs like that, where you're using a different voice. This song is like a revelation to me. I think many queer people will have different stories but can draw so many parallels to the lyrics of this song. When you're going through it though, you feel totally alone and like you're the only one who feels this way because homophobia was normalised (I grew up in the 90s-early 2000s and it was still like that, but I imagine in the 80s it was even worse). This song is like my own perosnal therapy session. 😅 I'm glad Darren was able to take the pain of such a negative experince and turn it into something so beautiful.

Even before watching your zoom interview, I knew "Crush 1980 Me", had a reality behind it with this song - As a fan from the 90s and 2000s and beyond, I finally got too see the real Darren Hayes as you are, always was, a beautiful human being, but seeing these, my heart soars beyond measures, and I am so happy that little Darren finally got to live his dream.

This is easily my favourite off the new album. Beautiful song and really moving. Really interested to see how this one would sound live as appreciate it's pitch shifted. I've always been sensitive and had 'more effeminite' interests, and as a result was subject to homophobic bullying im school growing up. I'm straight, and this filled me with so much confusion as a kid, being told either i'm not who I think I am, or it's 'wrong' i'm a boy and the way I am. There's something so warming about this song that reaches out to the young me, the positive chorus lifts him out of the verse and says 'who gives a sh*t? Go have fun!'

This song could have been the finest on his new album - if ONLY he had no processed his vocals. Darren Hayes' voice is stunning and achingly beautiful so I am not sure why his voice got this treatment on this song. I hope we get a version of this song with Darren's original vocals. I can imagine it being absolutely magical. Until that happens, we still think "All you pretty things" is the best song on the album - and one of the finest singles of the year.
