Very useful video. Thanks. People need to know that 8 bit footage should never be shot LOG even if some purchased camera apps offer that feature. Users should Stick with Rec709 as with 8 bit LOG you'll never be able to get the colours right and the image falls apart. Any Iphone before 12 and also the Ipad Pro 2021 has this 8 bit limitation.

Can you do a tutorial on 10 bit phone footage and Dolby Vision? I've seen some people state the 10 bit offered from third party apps can't be pushed much and not to use their logs. Then I've also seen negative opinions on Dolby Vision because of the auto exposure issues. Even if you adjust it manually the footage will compensate and fluctuate exposure particualrly in high contrast scenes such as snow.

Fantastic tutorial for not shredding 8bit 709 footage! I'd love to see how you'd handle 8bit hlg or log footage though, like you'd get from an a7iii. @@Rogeras32 I don't think anyone reasonable would disagree, but this is a channel aimed at colourists and people working on that end of the pipeline. Just saying "don't shoot it" isn't helpful advice at this point. Yes, it'd bear mentioning in any video about working with it but it's certainly a situation people working in colour will come across, at least for the next few years, with 8bit log/loglike from drones, previous generation mirrorless, action cams, incorrect settings etc.

Im using the free version of davinci and am wondering if it can grade or correct footage shot in the black magic camera app when recorded as log, also can it do the same for drone footage from the dji (m-log i believe). It seems that no one seems to mention this limitation on the free version (if there is one). last question if thats ok, can the free version also handle 10 bit footage or is all log footage 10 bit.( have not worked out what the 10 bit tickbox means in the settings of davinci) using an M1 macbook pro. many thanks UPDATE Just rewatched you drone footage video, dont know how i missed the part you saying that the free version cant handle the 10 bit footage.

Hey Daren, thanks for the tutorial, really helpful stuff. I just wanted to ask you little bit about that initial workflow of bringing that footage to ProRes 422 HQ. You specifically wanted to avoid transcoding to non HQ flavour and this was a surprise to me, I thought that because my phone/gopro/mirrorless camera acquired the footage in that unfortunate delivery codec that h.265 is, then already some informations are lost and using less compressed ProRes options have little sense as the initial file had all that compression already in it. I often go just for the ProRes LT files to assure better editing performance if I'll end up with a bigger project but I always thought it doesnt matter if it's LT or HQ, especially since myself (and probably majority of people watching KZbin tutorial) we post our videos online and they end up being consumed mostly on phones. Thoughts on that?

I tend to fight over sharpening or sharpening of noise more than any banding. Reducing mid tone detail is very friendly. I'd be curious to hear your thought on improving phone or gopro footage not just in color but trying to get more detail out of it and mixing it into beefy codec footage. Apologies if this has been asked before (or if I've asked it before, since my memory is like a sieve at the moment!) When would you say it is advantageous, when working in a DWG setup, to set up the clip's colour space by right clicking in the bin and setting the input colourspace? Eg, if you have a clip recorded in Panasonic V-gamut/V-log, telling Resolve with the "Input Colour Space" option what it is, which then seems to apply a correction LUT automatically? Are there any disadvantages in doing this?

Got it. But why is better to CST my footage from S-LOG 3 to Davinci wide gamut, and CST it again in the end from DWG to rec.709 instead of doing one CST SLOG3>Rec.709. I mean, what DWG timeline gives me? Do I have better controls? Nicer looks? Output is the same (rec.709), so what's the point?

It shows h265, 10 bit footage. And has a HDR symbol on it. Any ideas on how to fix the washed out colours? PS: I set the timeline to REC2000 HLG2100, and output to REC709a, then I get better results. But the colours are still no where close to the actual footage,

Is there a reason you use HQ for proxies instead of say LT? Since they’re proxies, wouldn’t it not really matter and LT should have enough bandwidth for converting iPhone 4K.
@hefal6661
@hefal6661 Жыл бұрын
If you want to grade on proxy - you need to transcode it to codec that is of at least the same or higher quality. For 8 bit input footage Prores 422 would be my choice - HQ have no benefits over standard 422. But if you are working with lots of files all the time one important thing is to NOT think about "what codec should i choose" - so working always with 422 HQ gives you this one less thing to think of. And thats it. TLDR you can choose different sizes of prores for different footage or you can just set-it-and-leave-it.

the switching to rec709 ( Scene ) in your demo here - I have been struggling lately, trying to find a reason Resolve even gives that choice. The only thing that I can see for it's choice is to trim camera footage and still retain the original gamma of the camera footage, for other uses. It seems to me that setting that for the timeline is going to create a gamma difference when people are monitoring in rec709 2.4 and with inconsistencies in gammas - it can create some problems. The other thing is transforming rec709 into DWG. To me with the node color management that its not giving any benefits except forcing the color space aware to work in DWG. But the concept of putting a small glass of water into a large bucket, doesn't make the small glass of water any larger. I guess it doesn't hurt but would argue that you really don't see or gain any advantage. Your 8-bit rec709 footage is still 8-bit and doesn't increase in dynamic range or actual hues. I know through seeing questions on this stuff in the forums is that new users find it a bit confusing to comprehend. On the plus side - I really love this new format of doing a live premiere, and doing the step by step, through a simulation of an actual grading session - I think it's going to be really successful for you. It seems more organic to me and less gimmicky than what some others are doing. Feels more like training rather than an infomercial, ( if you know what I mean ). If I had just stumbled on your video now - I would be hitting that LIke button hard and subscribing. Unfortunately I can't subscribe more than once - but I hit the LIke button on this and am looking forward to your next video. cheers.

Hi Jim. the REC 709 scene works on the source as you can see when i BYPASS the nodes there is NO change at all. My source from the iphone I have no idea if its 2.4 or not ? And the REC709 to DWG is to keep my fixed node tree same for when mixing my footage with log footage, as in documentaries etc. Im sure I mentioned that but maybe it didnt come across. I get your water ana;ogy but it does no harm..the same as comverting H265 to ProiRes422HQ doesn't make 8bit footage become real 10 bit, but the workflow is smoother. Glad you like the Premiere. I do them every now and again - quite fun to interact! Thanks for the like and the kind words as always!! have a good weekend, Darren.

The benefit I see of doing a 709 to DWG transform is that my tools behave the way I’m used to (even if it doesn’t give the footage more dynamic range)

I never thought of using proxies this way but of course 💡. Can’t remember if it was you or another who introduced preset (blue in this case) to avoid banding. Is this another approach than curves or is there a for and against. Hope the question makes sense.

@@DarrenMostyn I watched this video once again, you warned us not to use keyer but, then you ended up using a keyer and vignette/window and flared it out to soften the edges in that beach footage cutting away the sky and in the sky-dominant footage you used a keyer and the debanding tool. So, do we use keyer in 8-bit footage or not? And do we have this issue with Iphone 14 pro maxe's 10bit image? thanks.

Why use prores422hq which is 10 bit and not just prores422 which is 8 bit? You can't more bits to an 8 bit image and you use more space.
@DarrenMostyn

Because i want the higher bit depth to allow better colour correction. Yes im only preserve the 8 bit values but when correction takes place i want a 10 bit signal for max flexibility. Storage is not my priority.

I cannot highlight enough how much you helped me with this video. I am doing GoPro and drone recordings for my private travel videos - only on a hobby level - but I have improved my workflow and my results drastically because of you. Most of the videos on YT are for users who have good footage in ProRes or even RAW - which is also helpfull, don't get me wrong - but they forget us amateurs with action cams with that blurry 8-bit mess. Thank you for this nice and helpfull tutorial!
