Loved seeing all of those old keyboards. Out with the old, in with the new! The studio looks a little flashier since I was there lol The colour code on the logic keyboard is great. The backlighting on the Mac keyboard is neat. Great vid!

Confessions of a Keyboard Collector! Get some help Darren, it’s an expensive condition to have. I started looking for the perfect mechanical keyboard 10 years ago, Happy Hackers, Das Keyboards, etc. I love them all and can’t get rid of any! Very tempted with the Black Magic editors keyboard, but it’s so big. Use an old wired Mac board which doesn’t take up much room in front of the Elements panels. That Logi looks sweet tho..

For Windows, I really like the KB Keyboards backlit Davinci Resolve keyboard. It’s black, with adjustable backlighting and a wired USB connection. The layout is very similar to that of Darren’s Logic keyboard for Mac, and it has more Resolve shortcuts marked on it.

Nice seeing you again Darren. Hoarding electronics is something I was doing also. I took my Atari 1040st to the recycle place a couple of years ago, then a few months later saw an advert from someone looking for one and offering decent money. I think I definitely need the LOGIC KEYBOARD FOR RESOLVE 17 MAC - In the color page the keyboard keys are in my muscle memory, but when editing, because I do it so seldomly, everytime I think I remember the keystrokes, I find myself painstakingly trying to remember some of them and end up looking them up. When there is a client in the room, looks like you just started in the business when you have one of those senior moments where you were confident until you weren't confident. I currently use the Logitech for Mac that is solar powered - have no complaints- although the backlight would come in mighty handy. Nice job as always explaining everything. Even the product cutaways looked great. cheers.

Thanks Jim! Both keyboards are great. Backlit really was something I finally realised was missing even with some light on the desk it helps. I had a CRT BVM SONY that nearly went to the recycling...sold it for good money last year in the end. I still need to clear this 25 years worth of 'stuff' out though!

Hi Darren! Love your videos and am at the point where I am considering making the switch from FCP X to DR, in large part because of the excellent instructional videos you put out there. I use the Logitech keyboard but use it in a way few would think to use: I use, along with a USB KVM switch that allows me to (with the use of three buttons) - go from my HP desktop powerhouse, with 64 GHz Ram, (24 video ram), to my M1 mac mini (soon to be a mac studio!), so I am PC and Mac all in one system with three buttons - the usb KVM switch, the keyboard button to change computers, and the back of the Logitech mouse! Both PC and Mac powerhouses!! Incredible.

I like the idea of having the shortcuts printed on the keyboard. But the downside is, if you change the shortcuts in Resolve to fit your own needs it isn't helpful anymore. Therefore I think I would like the Logitech MX better. There's also a mechanical version. Which one is the better option?

I have a Logitech keyboard, it's a general-purpose one and I think it is great. I love the feel and also the built-in stand for iPads or iPhones, I have an iPad permanently in it and use this sometimes as a kind of reference monitor (for online viewing comparisons) or as an extra space for scopes, etc for Resolve or Capture One pro. it is not backlit but I now use one of those BenQ monitor lamps which is also fantastic.
@DarrenMostyn
@DarrenMostyn 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Lee. Good idea on the built in stands! The BENQ monitor lamps are not good for grading - far too much light spill even when dimmed down...great for editing though...I have one in one of our edit suites...its a good bit of kit!

I used the MX Keys board with my laptop sitting on my desk and it was fine. However once I got my desktop tower and placed it under my desk, I got massive lag, to the point it was unusable. Plus, I couldn't use F2 to rename Fusion nodes. I'll keep it for road trips. But I'm back to my old wired keyboard until I can afford a BMD Editors Keyboard. Oh, and when I tried to get tech support, it seems Logitech has gotten rid of all their humans in favor of an AI bot named Logan. I'm not kidding.

Hi Darren, did you have any joy with MX Mac function keys being acknowledged by Resolve? When functions keys are toggled on MX keyboard the F1-19 keys register in the Keyboard Customisation Window but sadly not in Resolve!
@mrfroopy
@mrfroopy 2 жыл бұрын
I have been editing with many NLE's for decades. Therefore I never use a keyboard with custom keycaps. I also have at this point customized my keyboard so far out of sync with what would be there that I just have the keyboard memorized by rote. I mean you can ignore keycaps but I think having them there influences you to put the commands where they are on the keyboard instead of what is the most efficient for your personal workflow.. I use a Kolude that is pretty great.

i am using the corsair k95 platinum, because of the backlighting, but mostly for the software that comes with it that allowes me to programm and custommize it how i like. with 6 extra buttons on the side, easy to use macros programming and it detects different opend programms and can switch between different profiles. i use the corsair scimitar pro mouse with it with 12 extra buttons on the side. that all might looks real "gamer" but it realy speeds up your workflow so i dont mind

Hey Darren, thanks for the video! After a year of working with the speed editor and half a year with the Logickeys, which is a fantastic keyboard especially when still learning things about DR17, I switched to the Blackmagic Editor Keyboard. Wouldn’t have done that but when they cut the original price in half I was able to purchase it. After a month working with it, I must say it is a true joy, but boy do I miss the backlit keys! Probably going to fix a small light via usb or something to get a clearer view. If you’re able to find all the keys blindly it shouldn’t be a problem. The mechanic keys and overall quality are superb. Sold my Speed editor and my Logickeys Astra 2 Mac is still for sale, so if anyone is interested? I live in The Netherlands.

After a week with the BMD Editor Keyboard I want to say, the worst compromise is having the arrow keys tucked into the main key area and the labels printed on the white keys is in grey. I still have to read what's on the keys until I have internalized the layout and the shortcuts. Unless I got the light on there's just no chance I can read this light grey on white. Oh, and boy do I wish it had the color coded printer lights!

I would love if you could make a tutorial showing the best way/workflow for Sony A7SIII users that want to shoot Prores Raw but want to edit using DR17. What should we do? I was thinking in converting Prores raw into prores 444 to retain the 12 bits and edit/grade in DR17. If that should be what we do, how much tweak should we do to the Prores raw before converting it to Prores 444? I truly appreciate any help on this as I haven’t found any guidance for this. Thanks.

You cant shoot ProRes RAW for Resolve. You really want to convert al that footage for shooting proRes RAW..? Doesn't make sense to me unless you have TB of spare drives knocking around. FCP X is the answer really IMO. Sorry not what you want to hear but that workflow is not practical IMO due to Resolves limitation.

The specs seem to be fitting the Dolby Vision requirements: 200000/1 contrast ratio minimum, 1000 nit minimum brightness. The color space has to be P3 D65 ST2084. I assume we would have the ability to calibrate it to the required color space. Would you recommend this for Dolby Vision mastering? Please let me know if you can. Thank you.

the Logic Keyboards are pure crap unfortunately, (same goes for editors keys) great at first look, but if you actually use them, the key´s hinges break within a year, if you are lucky.. I had 3 of them within 2 years (astra 1 and 2, and 1 editors keys), and now have finally a mechanical Corsair k95, with backlight. I would never go back to the low-profile e-waste.. no printed shortcuts though, but you know them anyways.. and you can colorcode each key individually

@DarrenMostyn
@DarrenMostyn 2 жыл бұрын
I got a German friend to translate this for me so I get it correct and not use an auto-translate which I don't trust. So that others can benefit - the translation is... " Is the keyboard also available in German? I think no, because you don't think any further than that your language allows it." The review is really language agnostic and the keyboard layout shouldn't be a factor as Im sure you can get local, but if not speak to the manufacturers...the test covers functionality really. Yes it would appear that both keyboards are also actually available in Germany. Hope that helps, All the best, Darren.
