I grew up in the Crenshaw high school area. Darryl was a Crenshaw legend in sports and grew up in the Rollin 60s neighborhood. Back in the 70s most gangs in the area were fist fighting. The violence erupted in 1979-1980.

One of the fondest memories I have. My grandparents took us to our first baseball game to go see the Mets play back in the 80s when i was a young child. We show up to the game a little late at Shea Stadium. As we are entering the stadium, we are walking up the stairs right behind the batter's box, behind home plate. The second we get up to where we can see over the wall, Darryl Strawberry is standing right there at bat with his back to us, pretty close. A split second later, the pitch is in the air and the first thing I see and hear is Strawberry cracking a massive homerun and the crowd roaring like crazy. It was like a scene in a movie the way it unfolded. The timing was impeccable. This was when Strawberry was at his absolute peak. I'll never forget what that felt like. Thanks Darryl.

If you didn’t like being in a chokehold you would try in school and change. But instead everyone is jealous of the people that do good and get out. The city kids have it made they could have been born into a trailer park up a holler in BFE West Virginia. Being born in redneck country is even worse because there aren’t many opportunities like you have in major cities. Here there is nothing but a few coal mines that’s left

Doc Gooden and Darryl created an eternal connection and great memories for NY Baseball fans. Even for us Yankee fans. For myself, it was the only period where I followed and attended Met games. For the youngsters, if they hadn't been caught up in the drug "war" in the 80's ( i.e when the U.S Gov't flooded black neighborhoods with drugs to finance international proxy wars for stealing resources) they both would likely have been Hall of famers. Straw who hit 335 while missing major parts of 6 seasons with drug and cancer problems had can't miss Hall of fame talents. Doctor K had HOF abilities too. I'm glad they will be honored at SHEA this year. ( a little Yankee fan dig😁)
