Great stuff, at first i didn't calculate how the 6th for the 2nd degree could be major, since it's a minor chord, but then alas i recalled the 2nd mode's characteristics, BAM!

In my mind i memorize the 6th by the parallel minor. C-a, G-e, D-b etc.

I think paralled minor of C major would be C minor, isn't it? Did you mean relative minor? Also, this method is useful, but one has to account for major/minor 6th interval? For example, in the E major scale, 6th is C#, and in the E minor scale, it is C.

hey, can anyone explain to me why he is playing a d major 6 in the key of C? i was under the impression that the second chord of the key will be a minor. thank you :)
@DarrylSyms
@DarrylSyms 2 жыл бұрын
It’s been a while since I filmed this so I don’t know what you’re quoting, but I predict that the problem is that you’re not understanding the difference between FUNCTIONAL vs NON-FUNCTIONAL. Perhaps you misinterpreted “D major 6” with “start on D and then up a major 6” 👍

I think you're asking why the second harmonised sixth that Darryl plays at around the 2:38 mark has the same shape as the first one, when, if the harmonised sixths start on C (a major chord in the key), the next shape, starting on D (a minor chord in the key) would be different. Darryl's actually harmonising the C major scale starting on A here , i.e. he's harmonising the A natural minor scale. The notes of the scale on the thinner of the two strings in the chosen string set should be harmonised with the sixth on the the thicker string. For example, the C note harmonised in sixths for all string sets would be: 12x10xxx (strings 6 and 4), x7x5xx (strings 5 and 3 - which Darryl plays at 3:05), xx2x1x (strings 4 and 2) and xxx9x8 (strings 3 and 1). These particular sixths comprise the third and root of the chord (triad). Each triad will have two sixths, consisting of these notes of the scale - type 1: the third (thicker string) and root (thinner string) and type 2: the fifth (thicker string) and third (thinner string). These lie two shapes apart on a given string set where each note of the scale is harmonised in sixths. For example: x7x5xx - E and C notes, i.e. third and root; and x10x9xx - G and E notes, i.e. fifth and third (which is also E minor harmonised as a sixth in the sequence). There will be a third type of sixth for seventh chords, comprising the seventh on the thicker string and the fifth on the thinner string. It's worth trying to relate the shapes to known chords, to help locate them on the fretboard, e.g. xx2x1x is part of the open C major chord and can be related to the CAGED C shape anywhere on the neck, and xxx9x8 is part of the E shape C major barre chord.

One thing I don't understand is why the 3rd gets a minor third and a minor 6th. I just accept that it does, and that's the rule. But I don't know WHY that's the case. Supposedly if you stack a third on top of each interval you get its' 1-3-5 triad. But I have no idea why the 3 on 2-3-6-7s get flatted, I just know that's the rule.

Hi Darryl I use major and minor 6th intervals in my newest song at about the 6.24min mark. In other riffs I used major and minor thirds but yea, the sixths brought something else to the sound Nice work mate! kzbin.info/www/bejne/rZTTm3ihhZycmbs The sound is nice for sure

Perhaps you’re a terrible learner? Or this is just waaay out of your league and you should take a step back? You’re the only person out of over 16,000 viewers to have complained, so either you’re an incredible and elite guitar player/teacher with an incredible ego, or this is way outta your league. I predict the latter 🙂
