Marr really did stand out in the Dark Council. He didn't give a shit about Sith politics, he just did what was necessary to defend the Empire and died for it.

And unlike all the other council members, Darth Marr never feared death. The very reason he fought so hard for the empire was because he felt his death approaching, so he wanted to leave a strong empire behind him. It's pretty obvious now that I think of it that the reason he singles out the imperial player character, who is still young and inexperienced compared to the old lords of the council, is because he wants to train them into a leader for the empire. Why else would he call out to a single young imperial, especially the Emperor's Wrath is a weird choice unless he specifically wanted someone who doesn't have ties to the dark council and their ways. He's one brilliant character.

Darth Marr: a Sith whose sense of patriotism and loyalty to his people redeemed him from the grasp of the Dark Side. He stood before his Emperor, faced him down and said "no". Selfless sith is an oxymoron by the definition. If a sith acts selflessly, he loses power. And if he loses power, he will fail to hold his position against those more powerful than him. Yeah, Marr is a cool character, but his efforts would've never been enough to fight against the sith way of life. Nor is it necessary. You don't grow flowers out of rocks.
@dramwertz4833
@dramwertz4833 3 жыл бұрын
@@user-ry6sx6uq2d altough the second one is true, a selfless sith can still exist. As long as smth extremely powerful unites these sith they can be "selfless" because in reality they work for themselves, for the knowledge that one day the Jedi will burn and that at some point they will pay for everything. A sith can fight for this goal alone, being "selfless"because it isnt important if the sith suceed in his lifetime. (Ofc this is only my opinion, not a statement)
@user-ry6sx6uq2d
@user-ry6sx6uq2d 3 жыл бұрын
@@dramwertz4833 Oh, but one of the sith's greatest desires is to overcome their own mortality. And for an example of that you should look no further than Valkorion. Selfishness is a core and foundation of all sith philosophy. Everything a sith does is for his own ends. Being selfish of course does not mean being a psychopath, but in the end sith live not for any ideal, not for any cause, not for some greater goal but purely for themselves.
@dramwertz4833
@dramwertz4833 3 жыл бұрын
@@user-ry6sx6uq2d yeah, i agree most sith are obviously extremely "physically" self centered (here as: they want to be all-powerful and live as they want). But in theory imo a sith can also be selfish by "fulfilling" his emotions. Ofc as soon as this would be fulfilled, hea cease to exist as an sith since he had no emotions to draw from anymore but thats why such large scale things as the revenge at the jedi work perfectly for that. And this means a sith could be completely selfish because he wants to fulfill HIS emotions/dreams/visions, wants to enact HIS revenge but doesnt care if somebody else wields HIS sword to do so. Thus he can devote his full life to making sure that this revenge will happen without ever centering on anything other. Only my opinion tho ofc. Realistically the fear of death is probably a too human thing to ever completely overcome, no matter how strong the hate

Marr proved that being a Sith does not necessarily make one evil. Marr practiced the dark side of the Force for decades, but he didn't care for the infighting that plagued the Order of the Sith Lords. He cared about the Sith Empire and it's people. So much so that he was willing to die to defend it and that is exactly what he did. Darth Marr is the greatest Sith that ever lived.

The true Champion of the Empire and a man for the people. Marr is the epitome of everything that a Sith should aspire to be: courageous, ruthless, powerful, honest. When "Valkorion" killed him, I'm not going to lie, I cried a little bit. Marr is so awesome. I liked him instantly from his few scenes in Annihilation, which was before I'd seen him properly in SWTOR. The idea of a sith who actually cares about the Empire and wants the infighting to end was very interesting. He was off-putting at first in Rise of the Hutt Cartel, but that might be because I had my Imperial Agent antagonize him because she doesn't really like sith. But after her adventures on Makeb, she came to understand him, and I imagined her becoming his champion. I really liked him in Shadow of Revan, and was very upset when he died. And I loved how he was honored with becoming a force ghost, because in the end, he truely was selfless.

The one crucial difference between Marr, and most other Sith, while most sith thought of themselves first and foremost, Marr was thinking of the better interests of the empire. That is what he fought for, every step of the way. A better empire. When he died, it was a selfless act. He did not care if he died, he did not care for his own well being, all he cared about was stopping Valkorian from enslaving the Empire, and he would fight at any cost to keep it safe.
@balrok9959
@balrok9959 4 жыл бұрын
I think that is mostly thanks to his "previous" position in the Empire. He had the title "Defender of the Empire". He was the guy who fought defensive battles. When Empire was attacked Marr was sent to defend the Empire's planets. He was celebrated as the Hero of the Empire by its people. So I think during his career as the defender he comes to realize what he was defending. While other Sith were scheming and doing all for themselves he protected the Empire and everything Empire stands for. And when Empire was in Chaos he was the "head" of the Dark Council and took all responsibility for the Empire. He was the one that forged an alliance with Republic and it was also him that gathered the strike force against Darth Malgus.

Actually now i understand that Marr didn't choose dark side during his meeting with Valkorion. Valkorion offered him power, thing that Sith is so bind to it, so it's funny to tell that he was narrow-minded. It was obvious what he could choose but still he wanted to rise above it. I wouldn’t call him Emperor. Such a title implies he was akin to the very being he despised. Marr disdained internal politics, and put his focus on external politics. He didn't embrace the light....if you play the game that is very much clear...he embraced death, like Marka Ragnos did for example who also became a ghost and appeared over the millennia both on korriban to crash his own funeral and even the empress teta system to give his blessing to Exar Kun and Ulic Cel droma.. How many Sith willingly die? That's right, none except a few like Marr and Marka Ragnos... not fighting death yet refusing the void as marr did allows you to remain conscious within the force. He never embraced the light..he only acknowledged after death that the jedi code was right about there being no death, only the force. Neither Marka Ragnos nor marr ever embraced the light.

@@Blackdeathgaming-yv1kk You're kinda right when it comes to his philosophical POV, but from a purely "objective" standpoint, refering to the Force itself, what he did was indeed embracing selflessness, thus rejecting the dark side. How he names it doesn't really matter. With Marka Ragnos it was different, as he became a dark side spirit, like Exar Kun or Ajunta Pall. That's not the same as a Force Ghost, which is entirely a light side phenomenon.

Reason why Marr was killed in KOTFE: He was so powerful that if he had lived, he would've destroyed Arcann, Thexan (if he was alive), and Vaylin.

The old eu had the pleasure of a few pov chapters of Darth Marr in the novel: Star Wars: The old republic annihilation and although he understood the reality of sith politics very well he was sick of the infighting ,he wasn't perfect, still very much a sith when it came to being a military leader...being to eager to restart offensives that would drain the empire more then it gained to appear strong...but he very much wanted to reform the empire itself like malgus..he even calls malgus out for being an idiot for crowning himself emperor eventhough he agreed mostly with his vision..in the book it's ironic because there's a replacement needed on the dark council and there are 2 candidates... a human and a falleen. And the empire is very racist at the time. Marr recognises that they cant keep oppressing basically everone and wants the falleen on the council to show the empire that an alien can also thrive in the empire...everyone else basically disagrees except for him. So the other sith has to conquer this world and then marr would support him. I just remembered the name of the falleen being Darth Karrid.. so marr reaches out to Karrid who btw was the former apprentice of malgus. But she stayed loyal when malgus declared his new empire.. she is also in control of the asendant spear which is a super weopon that is detrimental to the siths war effort. Marr tells her the decision of the dark council and she goes off to "reinforce" the other candidate. While using a subtle threat she baits the other sith in attanking her and she destroys both the sith fleet and the republic fleet and presents the comm logs to the dark council. The irony here is that when she does so all the councilors that were against her are now super welcoming because she destroyed her rival like a true sith according to them by being subtle. Sith politics basicslly allows you to kill your rivals as long as on paper it seemed like you did nothing wrong and because she didnt shoot first she was allowed to wipe him out. So everone is satisfied with her killing her rival in true sith fashion and Marr, Well Marr is just disappointed. He hoped she would've been above such a ploy... Later in the book i felt like Marr myself when i was frustrated with needless sith violence...SIS had been wanting to destroy the ascendant spear for a while and in their operation they had cracked the black cipher of the sith empire. They had been watching their transmissions and manipulated Karrid through her former jedi master to head to duros where already a sith fleet was going to engage the republic. Due to the trap being set on duros later and manipulating Karrid to get there the republic fleet orbitting duros is way stronger then anticipated meaning that the first sith fleet stands no chance (kudos to the grand moff that goes for a kamikaze attack trying to crash into the population on duros). When he does so the remaining sith ships that are heavily outnumbered try to retreat.. and what does Karrid do when she arrives? She destroys the fleeing vessels for cowardice. I deadpanned at that and i felt frustrated beyond believe.. so needless. Poor Marr and the Imperials have to deal with that bullshit daily.

Marr yes. Not Jadus. Jadus wanted to democratize Fear, in other words, for all to have fear. That is not how to build a lasting empire, as Tarkin found.

I find it incredibly incredulous how nearly every "great" Sith Lord, both in the old & new republic, are almost always human even when masked. And not of the original Sith species from which the their title originates. The only two Sith of renown are Marka Ragnos and Naga Sadow, and only one of them was considered "pureblood".
