Sorry to hear about your Mums car getting broken into. Yes there are some bad types about but they are in the minority. GPS wins hands down when compared to a phone for the very reasons you mentioned. Battery life and weatherproofness. I find my Etrex difficult to read now with middle aged eye's so have got my hands on a secondhand Garmin GPS60 which has larger digits. I was walking in this same area last year and will be back there again in a few short weeks. Sandy

Hello again Abbie. Nice little film as ever, your films tend to be very light hearted, which i like. And that one was, right up to the point you mentioned your mums car. which had to be put on film, people need to know things like that. I could certainly use some choice Anglo Saxon English words to describe how i feel about people who break in to cars. But i'm all for keeping it decent on youtube, even in the comments section. Any plans for Grander walks this year? I've probably mentioned this before, but i'm planning a walk along the wolds way this year in June. partly because of how well you advertised it on your channel. And also because iv'e had a book about the best walks in Britain for about 20 years, and the wolds way is clearly in it. and iv'e got no excuse not to go there. hopefully i will film it for youtube as well. i'm still in the early planning stages of attempting to create a youtube channel with a friend of mine. it will be based largely around getting dads and kids outdoors more together. All will be revealed should we create something we consider worthy of broadcast. OK, iv'e waffled enough. Good Film, Good Presentation, Good Job. Gary.

Oh, boy, did you awaken some memories. Once upon a time, there was an English progressive rock band called Yes, and they used a photo of Yes Tor as one of their album covers. That's apparently in the same group of Dartmoor Tors you visited, as I realized when you got to yours and were saw the sign about military debris exploding and blowing your bits to space. My family and I went to England many summers gone and as the world's biggest Yes fan, I insisted we go. We were warned that it was an active artillery practice area, so my Dad wasn't too thrilled driving us up to where my brother and I could hike to the Tor, but, risking life and limb, we did. Now that's what I call fandom. :-0 As an aside, it your GPS unit a satellite device? Not too many cell towers up there, I should think.

Yes Tor is over by Okehampton (North Dartmoor} Abbie was closer to Tavistock (South Dartmoor)

I'm sorry to hear about your mum's car. We should bring back conscription and instill some discipline into these miscreants. You seemed to enjoy your walk with your dad. I won't pretend to know the Monty Python scene because I'm not particularly familiar with Monty Python. A nice video as always!

Hi, thanks for watching! The map is just an OS map :) Compass isnt anything fancy - a £3 deal from Go Outdoors, but they all do the same thing!

I'm also sorry to hear about your mum's car - on the Quantocks, as well. Someone told me you can use GPS on a phone without mobile data... That probably works well with standard mapping but I imagine you'd still need the data to downwload OS detail. Actually, I did this a few days ago, in an attempt to escape Frome... (Sometimes, 1:25,000 doesn't offer enough detail). I'd never thought about it before but there really aren't many other places where you could properly practice night navigation. At least, not in the south of England.

You're not wrong there. If you download the maps you can access them on the phone and use GPS, somehow!! I dont pride myself in being a tech-wiz but its good to know.

OS Maps have a code inside the cover beneath a scratch-off panel. Install the free OS Maps App on your phone and download the map to phone memory using the code and a wi-fi connection at home (maps are quite large files) to save your 4G data and the map/phone can be used like GPS but with no need for an off-air data connection. No doubt there are other methods using alternative maps and apps. Viewranger is popular. You might find OS Locate, GridReferenceFreeOS or GPS Essentials of interest.
