Fingers crossed I'll be up on there Mon night...I have the phoxx 1 as almost a bivvy tent as there's really not much space. You can actually clip the outer to the bottom of the inner so just have to roll it up and over the frame - saves fighting with it if it's windy.
@joinmeoutdoors2 жыл бұрын
It should be nice and quiet on the Monday - great shout. I agree with what you say about the Phoxx 1, it is tiny, but still more usable space than a bivvy, so it's a good compromise between a bivvy and a tent. Good point about leaving the fly clipped to the inner, I hadn't thought of that. Thanks for watching!

Thank you for another very nice video James. As a relative noob to camping, I'd like to transition to hiking/wild camping. However I'm finding it difficult to decide what size backpack to go for. How do you work out what size is right? Maybe the subject for a future video?
@joinmeoutdoors2 жыл бұрын
Hi Antonio. First of all, thank you for your kind comment 😊 Combining hiking with camping is a really good way to extend your time in the great outdoors 👌 Personally, I just bought "a very big" backpack for my first wild camp. It was cheap (£40 I think) and 60 litres. It actually turned out to be about the right size, and I soon replaced it with a better quality 65 litre backpack (Osprey Atmos AG 65). My equipment (tent, sleep mat and sleeping bag) were all quite big when I first started, so I needed a big backpack even in the summer. I have upgraded my gear so that it is smaller and lighter now, but in the winter, I still need that big 65 litre bag. If you can only afford one backpack, I would probably recommend going for on that is 60-65 litre. If the pack you buy turns out to be too big, then you'll have some free space. But if it's too small...you won't be able to take everything with you that you need. I will bear your suggestion in mind, about making a video on this topic 😊👍 James.

Looked a cracking pitch James and a nice walk into it - maybe the Gods were smiling down on you if the other guy had a crosswind to contend with. I have not down any walking in Dartmoor but would like to at some point. Do you keep a record of the routes you do anywhere, it would be good to see the route. Sounds like you have a fair amount of camping gear then.. The sound is very good on your pieces what do you use to record the videos and sound with? Loving the look of that Exos 48 in blue I have to say - my birthday is coming up, praps I can get the kids to contribute to a new bag..lol. Very enjoyable watch this Saturday night. atb Al
@joinmeoutdoors2 жыл бұрын
I think you're right, Al - my pitch gave me all the views I could have wanted from Dartmoor that night, but without the noise of the wind. Dartmoor has really surprised me with its walking and camping. I like how much space and solitude you can find there. I record my walks on Strava, but dont upload them to a website or anything. I often just Google a route before I head out, or end up plotting my own on the OS Maps app, which works really well for me. The Osprey blue is really striking, isn't it? Sounds like the perfect present idea to me! Thanks for watching 😊

Sorry Al, I just remembered that someone had asked about audio recording, and found your comment. I mainly record using my GoPro's internal mic, but sometimes use my Rode Wireless Go II.

@@joinmeoutdoors Whenever I try the GPro internal even with a wind protector on its bloody awful - I have ditched so many recording because of it. @joinmeoutdoors2 жыл бұрын
@@thevalleywalker Sorry to hear about your unusable audio. Filming outdoors does pose numerous challenges! I just use one of the generic cheapo foam "windslayer" cases on the GoPro. For the Rode setup I use a little Boya lav mic (£11 I think) with the bog standard foam attached. Nothing special. Mic placement is important, but not overly technical, and finding shelter from the wind wherever possible, but I don't think I'm telling you anything you don't already know. I don't enable the wind noise reduction on the GoPro as I read that it can be a bit of a hindrance.

The great weight dilemma is a bugger. I'm always relatively heavy tbf as my tent is 2.9kg (crux X2 storm) so I'm sitting at around 14kg (20kg in winter) but I'm always happy enough so it's well worth it. The phoxx is a cracking thing for the money and is proven in sketchy weather too. What's happened with the southern cross? Stay safe and well mate, Adge

Haha I'm starting to enjoy the quest for lighter weight now! I was reluctant to spend money on camping gear for the first year, but am happy to invest in my main hobby now, like most people I'm sure. 20 kg is a fair weight to hike with in the winter, but it's clearly not holding you back 💪 The Southern Cross was showing signs of wear on the peg-out straps. I'll have to put a video together once it's back, so I will explain everything in that vid 👍 The Phoxx was a good buy to see me through though! Thanks for watching 🙏

I camp on dartmoor once a month,ive only camped on a tor once,i prefer out of the way spots,which is why i prefer the lowland parts,also,you dont get many people,as most walkers tend to stay on the beaten path,just dont get why people must camp on a tor when there is so much more to explore on the moor 🤷♂️
@joinmeoutdoors2 жыл бұрын
You make a good point, Pete. Personally, I love the tors because of the elevation and geological interest, plus it feels like a bit more of an "achievement" for some reason. I've found this in the Brecon Beacons as well though - camp away from the peaks, and the foot traffic is dramatically reduced, and you're not fighting for a spot. In the rest of the UK (apart from Dartmoor, as I said above), if you do no have permission from the person/organisation who owns the land you are camping on, you may be asked to leave if they see you. The law is not very strongly enforced when it comes to wild camping, so if you follow the acceptable wild camping practices, and choose a suitable location away from people and houses, you will normally be fine. Places like the Lake District National Park, the Brecon Beacons (in Wales) and Snowdonia National Park (also in Wales) know that people love wild camping, so they allow it as long as you behave sensibly and respectably 🙂

@@산타는예롱이 Yes, it is an area of law that is not strongly enforced, so you will see people (like me) sharing their wild camping videos.
