Daryl is a class act. His playing speaks for itself, but if you get the chance to meet the man, he’s the real deal. Zero ego. Total professional. Genuine human being with a solid head on his shoulders. It’s no wonder why Phil Collins has him on all of his albums and brings him on every tour.

@arthurbrucecrawford68969 жыл бұрын
You don't seem to get it. No one has said Daryl is a bad guitarist. We all know he is an excellent performer. The whole point is, his own particular rendition of Firth of Fifth is terrible. Other than that, He's great. You see, Firth of Fifth should be played the way it was originally conceived, with no room for speed riffs and stuff like that. You don't ruin a classical painting from the rennaissance by spraying it with Graffitti just because you think you are an awesome graffitti artist.
@tpmbe9 жыл бұрын
this particular clip is not great . agree with you there. I do get it
@tomfalcone71707 жыл бұрын
He has other recordings of Firth of Fifth that are much better. This one has the most nods to Hackett and, because of this, it sounds a bit forced. Also, the renaissance painting comparison doesn't work here, because music is an interpreted art. Something like progressive rock is heavily influence by the performer. Prog, at its core, is blues derived, jazz influenced, and baroque influenced-all of which are improvisational to some degree. Each live performance will respectively yield greatly different results. This is especially evident in groups of the Canterbury scene, which tend to be jazzier. Want to complain about spray-painting over the Mona Lisa? Check out any of Steve Hackett's Bach renditions. Maybe the Renaissance reference was a projection of your untold desire for Stuermer's sweet solo on the Jean-Luc Ponty track of the same name....

I first heard Daryl back in '79, when he was playing with Ponty. Then I wondered where he went because Ponty changed guitar players every album. I only just found out that he'd been Genesis' longest reigning guitarist a few months ago (though I'd been a Genesis fan, I didn't know who was playing guitar for them). He's definitely one of the best players out there in my book, being a player myself.

Ah, yes; cue the “Daryl’s no Steve, he can’t play the F of F solo” complaints. You can set your watch to it. I love Steve too; better than I love Daryl. But if there ever was a subject that the demands a STFU response, this one is certainly it. It’s tiresome. Give the guy a break. He’s a phenomenal guitarist. He’s been touring with Genesis since 1978. I was fortunate enough to see him that year and he was great. Is he better than Steve? Maybe not, but he’s damn good and he does it in his own style. Remember, Steve left Genesis, they didn’t throw him out. Every time someone complains about Daryl it’s as if they’re insinuating that he pushed Steve out of the band or something. The only “complaint” I have with this video is the title. It may be splitting hairs but it’s really Firth of Fifth and Los Endos, not Squonk. Yes, Los Endos is a recapitulation of parts of Squonk, but the song they’re playing in this video is really Los Endos.

Funny. Bill Bruford is praised exactly for being a jazzier musician. He is always considered Yes' best drummer in spite of being a jazz drummer. While Daryl is criticised for being a jazz guitarrist. That's NON SENSE! People don't like Daryl just because he wasn't a member of the classic line up. That's why. Prog fans don't listen to music, they listen to line ups. I am confused... Didn't Steven write/play music? Each time a musical piece is played it has slight changes as the artist puts his stamp on it. Poetry is words written on paper. True, when someone reads aloud they can put their feelings into, but not to the extent that music can.
@JonP196111 жыл бұрын
If "stuermers play" is not restricted only to his work with Genesis, I'd be curious to see any actual references to the claim. I can see how the Genesis purists wouldn't care for his style. Saw Daryl w/JLP back in '77. JLP opened for Renaissance. We walked out during Renaissance's 2nd song. We wanted to like them, but JLP totally blew them off the stage. Not sure what the hatred to toward Steurmer is about. He was a professional session guitarist hired as a sideman for Genesis Tours, as was Chester Thompson. There are plenty session musicians who play live and in the studio for establish names. He was hired to play Steve Hackett's and Mike Rutherford's parts in live performances. Steurmer never professed to be a member of Genesis or to be a songwriter/guitarist like Steve Hackett. Hacket was a member of the original Genesis and went on to a solo career where he had decent success writing and performing his own songs as well as performing Genesis songs live and in the studio. Between the two, Hacket has his signature style and sound, reputation, and the songwriting and composition talent. Steurmer is a session guitarist and hired gun. Can't really compare the two.

I always shook my head wondering how/why Daryl was chosen to fit into Genesis. His staccato playing style kinda simulates Mike R's. But not in the least does he even come close to Steve. He might play the same notes but the feel and tone is lost. Now when he was with JLPonty it was a great fit and some of the comping and counterpoint to Allan H was really great. I still wonder how he came to Genesis ......and what they thought of his playing for real, not some hashed up interview response.
