Can you imagine? I listened to almost all reaction videos of almost all vlogs commenting on this collaboration. If there had been 100 or more, you bet, I would have heard almost every single one of them. Mind you, you have to re-listen to this song several times over to appreciate the individual voices, which apparently don’t appear quite clear at first listening. Definitely, Daryl's hand is almost palpable in the making of this video, and played the chosen parts well. It was a good decision to start this cover by the voice of Michael Pangilinan as the song is already melancholic from the start, and his voice already brings this up in clear relief: the opening part needs a clear enunciation of words to establish the mood, and what more appropriate kind of voice needed here than that of Michael’s: the baritonal quality jives with that big bass sound that drops just before the vocals start. When Katrina Velarde begins, you can hear traces of Mariah’s technique, but to every listener who knows Katrina's voice very well, no one could be equivocally mistaken. She has retained that melisma of Mariah's that makes this song so identifiable with the Diva. The good part is she is always consistent all throughout in all five minutes from start to finish. It was a good choice to give Mariah’s part to her, since singing this song requires a strong belting voice to reach and sustain those stratospheric notes, which Katrina did perfectly deliver. Also, her voice has to be strong against these three equally intense voices. The vlogs are unanimous with their assessments of the individual voices' smoothness and cleanness of tonality. But, it did not escape some observant commentators that the song did not present more of Bugoy’s and Michael’s richness of their vocal ranges, which to them should have been given more cover time. However, in my opinion, even how much the arranger would try to divide the song to individual voices, I think, there is not much leeway for each, since this is not their original song, they merely just cover this. It is as if the parts are already cut-out for them. Maybe they could ideally sing all parts of the song, but there has to be a choice to be made to whom these parts were to be given at the outset, since they could not just merely copy everything from the original. There had to be changes made based on the vocal capability of each to deliver what kind of sound and technique to be employed for each part. At any rate, this is just my opinion. One strong feature that stands out from the the group is that they were able to study their voices and have been so comfortable working together. This is very important, since Boys II Men started from humble beginnings and as a group knew each other's voices and how to use them in every song they make. These are intelligent vocalists and band. With Budakhel, it was a serendipity that they clicked off right away, and that their voices matched right from the time that their group was incidentally born. This is very essential in looking for the kind of sound that they had employed, which served as the background blending for Katrina's strong voice to propel, just like a tarmac upon which an airplane ascends after gaining speed. To a sharp listener, the story line of the song is between a living and a departed whose love goes beyond the boundary which death separates them. So very important in this song is a solid and equally matched voice to create the impression of a communication, the drama that the song is trying to capture. The hushed background of the male voices re-creates this dimension of material and the immaterial between the living and the soul. And within this, the woman sings her part as a sort of aria to show this undying longing for the one love who has untimely left her. Given this scenario, it is but fitting that the narration of the woman as captured in her lines should also be matched with a response from the man, who should have equally powerful love as manifested by an equally powerful voice. This I think is the reason why the choice of Daryl's voice and style comes to the fore - the intensity of this communication comes at the height of the song in the bridge part. It is also to be noted that the employment of chest and head voices are used intentionally to again to re-create this separation in marked relief. Talking to the departed is not done through the volume of the voice, but in the silence of the heart. On the other side, choosing parts in chest and head tones serves as a sort of buffer before the dramatic climax of the song, which demands good amount of air and a sustaining pitch. These communicating and hugely powerful voices also require the unremitting melody that sustains these ad libs and harmonies at the foreground. Though Bugoy's voice may not be identified clearly at some parts, but its basal and husky voice is a perfect background vocals due to its low registers, though here and there, he goes up and down with his usual runs. Even so, Bugoy should always be proud because his voice is typical to him, and to no one else. Even in a few seconds, he was able to show that strong emotion in his raspy voice. Generally, the melody should not be lost, lest the whole vocal architectonic comes crashing down. Lastly, kudos to Daryl as a good teacher as he is: Daryl knows who to sing which part. He definitely reserves the highlight of the song for himself, and this was a very prudent move. His tessitura is high, and this part of the song is demanding both in pitch and technique. Daryl really knows how to surprise the ears of the listeners. He has planned everything in his head as a good teacher does. This is where experience counts the most, and the outcome is one big surprise! I hope you will all collaborate again in the future and God bless to you each!
