Thanks for the video. Das Boot ran as a TV-series as well (in the mid-80's?). There's a memorial in Kiel, Germany, dedicated to the uboat men of WW1 and WW2, who are still on patrol. I've passed it a fair few times, when going through the Kiel Kanal (or Nord-Ostsee Kanal, as it is named in German). You can also see U-995 on the coastline close to the memorial, where she's a museumship today.

@@ClaspsofCourage The directors cut of Das Boot is really a condensed version of the TV mini series though. It is really hard to find the TV series as a DVD box set. I think it got released once. That is where i got mine. The thing is that without the TV series, they would not have gotten the budget to produce this on such a large scale. The 1:1 scale movie prop u-boat that could be watered and swiveled and angled can still be visited in the movie studios Babelsberg. It is quite the feat of engineering.

It's kind of late for this year, but maybe you can put it on the calendar for next year. A few days ago I was watching the iconic film "White Christmas". In one of the scenes at the end of the film I noticed two of the main characters, Capt. Bob Wallace (played by Bing Crosby) and Pvt. Phil Davis are wearing their uniforms and both are wearing medals. It would be interesting to hear you discuss what they were.

U-boat service was virtually a kamikaze death rate outfit at the end of the war.
@SampoPaalanen6 сағат бұрын
From what I've read it was even worse then with Kamikaze pilots, so that says something about how dangerous it was that the death rate was worse then in service where whole point was to go and get yourself killed.

Do someone know if a german military only carries the highest version of Ironcross. It kind of looks like germans didn´t like to fill their chest with decorations.
@gwtpictgwtpict42148 сағат бұрын
If you look at German uniforms of WWII you'll frequently see a red white and black ribbon on second buttonhole from the top of the tunic, that indicates the wearer had been awarded the Iron Cross 2nd class. When the Iron Cross 1st class had been awarded the medal was worn centered on a uniform breast pocket, usually the left one from memory? Finally the Knights Cross was worn around the neck. Again, look at wartime photographs, you'll see Wehrmacht personnel wearing all three.
@exploatores7 сағат бұрын
@@gwtpictgwtpict4214 i must have missed those pictures. But if you compare that to a russian military. that looks like they have the risk of falling forward du to thei weight of the medals.
@MrGoodSpoon7 сағат бұрын
The medal of the Iron Cross 2nd Class was pretty much only worn on the day of receiving it. Afterwards the ribbon (only) would be worn through the 2nd buttonhole on the tunic. The Iron Cross 1st Class was worn on the shirt pocket and would typically continue to be worn, also if a higher class ie the Knight Cross was awarded.
