Fact of interest folks, trains 14 & 11 usually meet each other at a siding on Cuesta Pass or in San Luis Obispo depending if their on time. In addition, this video was produced between January-April 1995 which was a month before the PACIFIC PARLOUR CAR was added.

I was just thinking, they still used the old AT&SF hi-level transition car but not the Pacific Parlor car (which sadly have been retired in the past several years here as of 2024).

@@colinmulder6806 The Pacific Parlor cars were retired I think in 2022 or 2023 from what I've been able to find. But in these 1995 scenes they were using the hi-level transition cars.

@@FreihEitner As mentioned these scenes were taken before the P.P.C. was added to the consists of both Starlight's. At the time it was supposed to be Amtrak's strategy of giving passengers a FIRST CLASS experience where they both dine & enjoy superb views of the Pacific Ocean & Cascade Mountains. It even included an afternoon wine tasting on both trips.

This is a VERY helpful reference point for the 1995 Coast Starlight consist I want to model, but you left out the best clip of Dash 8 #510 screaming through Gervais Oregon in the final shot of this volume, and the end shot then zooms in on the American Flag

I agree. That scene too should've been featured.

There's a lot of history of trains, primarily Southern Pacific that served these stations as early as 1929. 2:08 Salinas, California served by the Southern Pacific Coast Line service between L.A. and San Francisco with the Daylight, Sunset Limited, Shoreline, Coaster, Del Monte, and Padre. 4:12 Mt. Shasta, this portion of track served by the Shasta (later Shasta Daylight trains southbound 9 and northbound 10), on the Shasta Route between San Francisco, California and Portland, Oregon. It then follows the Cascade Route beginning at Black Butte while the other track the Siskiyou heads north towards Montague, California and then into Medford, Oregon. At an elevation of 3,553 feet, the engineer could look from his cab window at the tail end of the train. Mt. Shasta had one of America's largest trout hatcheries one mile west of the station and a winter sports center. Klamath Lake is located near Klamath Falls, another stop for Shasta Daylight trains 9 (south) and 10 (northbound). Greater in size than District of Columbia, Connecticut and Rhode Island combined, at one time had lumbering and agricultural producing services. Some buildings were heated using natural water from hot springs. In the summer, auto stages were held on a daily basis. 1,500 gallons of diesel oil were consumed by the Shasta Daylight back in its' heyday. 9:32 The Union Pacific Cantara Loop crossing over the Sacramento River at Box Canyon. Dunsmuir was also served by the West Coast, Cascade, Shasta (later Shasta Daylight), Coach Special, the Oregonian and Southern Pacific's Motor Coach service. 10:20 Eugene, Oregon (elevation 426) served by the Oregonian, Shasta (later Shasta Daylight), Coach Special via Cascade Line, as well as Motor Coach services. North of Portland, the Coast Starlight follows the tracks of the Great Northern to Seattle.

Great video of my most favorite Amtrak rout which is the entire West Coast Route. I traveled the West Coast Route by rail from the Mexican border at San Ysidro on the San Diego MTS UC San Diego blue line trolley to downtown San Diego, the rode what is now called the Pacific Surfliner from San Diego to Los Angeles, and the Coast Starlight to Seattle from Los Angeles. The only part of the West Coast by rail I didn’t travel on was from Seattle to Vancouver,BC,Canada.

Great throwback of what it used to run with the P32 Pepsi cans!
@FreihEitner5 ай бұрын
As a die hard fan of the F40PH, I have grown to appreciate the P32-8BW in the intervening decades, but I never liked the Pepsi can paint scheme they originally wore. As I was just mid-teens when they entered service circa 1991 and had no interaction with other railfans, I was surprised to learn years later that others also referred to them as Pepsi cans. For me it was because the swooshing lines resembled what were at that time known as the "Pepsi Cool Cans" which had various outlandish and colorful designs.

Dammit, I miss the 1990’s and early 2000’s. There was a modern magic about railroading emerging into the 21st century with all that good 20th century nostalgia. Amtrak in phase 3. Dash 8’s. F40PHs. It’ll never look that good again.

Why does Amtrak insist on using locomotives with two axle trucks?

For M. DeVillers - I suppose you are probably correct. However, just for appearance sake, I would like to see a pair of GE ET44ACs in Amtrak livery and placed back to back (one running in reverse). Surely they can be geared for speeds of up to 90mph or so.
@aceoftrainsproductions7456 жыл бұрын
Apparently diesels with four-axel trucks are better for passenger service.
@jackboerner19016 жыл бұрын
They already tried three axle passenger locomotives. Almost put them out of business when they started in the 1970’s. SDP40f and P30CH, as beautiful as they are, was a disaster for Amtrak.
@TrinityCourtStudios6 жыл бұрын
Mitchell DeVillers Had nothing to do with money. Six axles locomotives are better for pulling power, yes, but at high speeds they are more likely to be unbalanced and derail. Amtrak’s E60 electrics we’re restricted to 90 MPH because of their heavy frame and six axle trucks. They were designed to go 125 but derailed at 111 MPH in testing. Amtrak’s P30CH’s and SD40PF’s also faced the same derailment issue with six axle trucks. They were all retired. Amtrak ended up going with the F40PH, the Dash 8-32BWH, P40-P42, Chargers, F59PHI’s, AEM-7’s and HHP-8’s could still handle the long line of passenger cars and have no detailing issues.
