One side of the fuses in the fuse tap are connected, typically the side opposite the wire of the tap. When you plug in the tap, that is the side power in the socket needs to go into your tap. You may have gotten lucky, but with fuse taps, you should always determine which side of the fuse slot in the panel the power comes in and which side of the tap is connected. If you install it backwards and the main fuse blows, you lose both circuits. In your case mirrors and dash cam. If installed correctly, power can continue to flow to the dash cam even if the main fuse is blown.
@gpunique7 ай бұрын
i'm installing one soon and dont fully understand this comment. how do you determine where the power comes in? Thanks
@AleksandrKrymskiy6 ай бұрын
@@gpunique Use a voltmeter. This is important - because depending on the way you plug in - it might end up essentially avoiding the fuse and connecting the tapped wire directly into the power source. When I did this on my Forester - my Power and Acc taps are actually plugged in opposite direction making it look weird - but at least it works correctly.
@HaydenReeve4 ай бұрын
Essentially it means there a right and wrong way to install the fuse tap. Make sure that the side receiving the voltage (the hot side) is not on the same side the wire is going out. Using a voltmeter will tell you which side is hot.
@BimmerWonАй бұрын
So basically to put this in laymen’s terms, you want the wires coming out of the tap to be coming out away a from the hot side of the fuse? Also, do you happen to know if the hot side for the 2021 Crosstrek is always on the right side of the fuse? Additionally, it doesn’t matter which direction the fuse we take out is facing when we plug it back in right? Finally, do the dash cams not have diodes inside them to prevent the electricity from flowing the wrong way?
@brandonporter4227Ай бұрын
@BimmerWon sorry, never saw the original reply comment. Usually, yes, the wire of the tap will be opposite the side of the fuse tap that connects the two fuses together. You should check for continuity with a meter to make sure though. The side that connects the two fuses of the tap together should be on the hot side of the fuse panel where power comes into the fuse. If you connect the tap backwards, the power will have to flow through the main fuse you're tapping and then through the fuse that connects to your camera or other accessory. If you blow the main fuse, you lose power to both when it's backwards. If you do it the right way, even if your main fuse blows, the other fused line for your device will still be connected to power. And no, the fuse itself doesn't care which way it goes in the holder. Ideally they should be connected so that they are readable, but a lot of mine were put in upside down. Again, it makes no difference. And the tap I used is constructed in such a way that my fuses ended up facing up so I can't read them anyway. I can't speak for the Crosstrek, but in my Outback, I believe it did come in from the right. I also can't speak for the camera construction itself either. There likely is a diode in there, but it should be anything you have to worry about as long as you follow the wiring directions.

A much easier way to get the cable through the rubber tube on the rear hatch at 28:00 is to pull it through with a fish (if you don't have one, you can make a mini one using a metal coat hanger). by also spraying it with a bit of WD-40 it slid right through, only took a minute or two.
