Actually, in many non vegetarian households of Nepali/Gorkhali community, ppl refrain themselves from eating non vegetarian dishes during "Navratha," i.e. from Mahalaya to Navami. And, those non vegetarians take non veg items from Vijaya Dashami onwards. In our culture, Dashain is the most important festival. And, Dashain festival starts from the day of Vijaya Dashami till the day of Poornima, where younger ones seek blessings from the eldest in the family, who put "Tika" made of rice grains and curd on the forehead of the younger ones (some prefer mixing vermilion with it while others prefer no vermilion, simply rice grains and curd(my personal favourite).
