Ha! Seriously deserved. Spent all night rebuilding a Holley carb & replacing all of the braking system on my 69 Ford F100 -- now I can to this and get to the body work!

Thank you, Jeff. I've been working on an old Volvo 240 dash. Everything I've tried looks like crap. This is very helpful. I will give it a shot.

What makes 1 man proud, makes another man roll his eyes. Black doesn't hide a thing that's for sure. It ain't perfect but did you see it before he started. Besides the State Fair called and said "no more entries". Think you could do better? I'm a optimistic kind of guy. Having the patience or time to even attempt a dash fix, just isn't available for some. Kudos for making something, normally thrown away, live yet again. Question~ when a man, works with his hands- what tool is he using? Answer ~ his brain. His arms & hands are mearly extentions~ mFulmer

great video, 2 years ago I restored my 1982 chevy c10 dash the same way, I just haven't painted it yet, was waiting for some body work to be done. what i like about your video is the way u used the roller for the texture, that was just awesome. thanks for video. I just restored the arm rests from my c10 truck, the vynil was coming off of the metal frame, I used gorilla glue and it worked great, I recommend it.

A better idea than the coat hangers would be a stainless steal mesh paper basket. Just cut the mesh off the basket and you can buy them in black. Great for the vent hole covers.😀

I'm impressed with this. At first I had some skepticism but it pulled off looking nice. You didn't mention what kind of calk besides saying house calk. It appeared clear when dry but was white when you put it on. Our old 86 F250 has a cracked up pad that I can't afford a lot of $$$$ to drop into it. I would like to know what kind of calking like latex , silicon , or just what works best. Thanks
@backyardengineering3686
@backyardengineering3686 8 жыл бұрын
Its just plane old Latex Caulk. I got the clear because its my preferance . you can use it on alot of prodjects and the white kind is a little more limmites ..... as far as cosmetics go any way

I would think rather than painting after filling the cracks and whatnot, that wrapping in a nice heavy-duty vinyl, perhaps marine grade, so that you get the texture and color, but also provides a smooth consistent surface. You could then also appropriately size the speaker grill "rods" and really make it a uniform piece if you rig up a vacuum form.

great idea, just go to a fabric store, buy the vinyl and use spray adhesive, would work for a headliner too, cool

I didn't know you could sand regular household Caulk. Also I'm reading online that caulk is not sandable and in my vague past experiences I recall having issues with clumping and creating alot of mess with trying to sand caulking. Otherwise this is the most promising DIY on the cheap dash fix - thanks for sharing

Jeff I must say that was a great restore. Well done sir. For your speaker grills, I recommend a product called tool dip. It will fatten the rods up and as soon as it reaches the edges it will self level. Keep the faith and upload more vids.

You could also just get the OEM vents that go into a 89-92 Firebird dash pad over the speakers and cut holes into the dash that they would fit into, rather than using coat hangers.

Not expecting to get the answer I’d like to get, but I figured I’d at least ask. Would I be able to do this without removing the dashboard? I want to restore the dash on my daily driver, but the way Chevy designed mine, you have to plug the gauge cluster into the dash itself. Meaning, I couldn’t take the dash out and just zip tie everything up for a couple of days. I’d have to restore the dash in-car. Thanks in advance
