They were saying it teaches you more about hazard perception than anything VicRoads or similar organisations generate. If you watch often enough you will see patterns of behaviour or visual cues that can assist any driver to develop greater situational awareness of the hazards that exist on the roads.

@tin2001
@tin2001 9 ай бұрын
My thoughts exactly. Although many older bike lanes are only on one side, and I'm fairly sure they used to be usable in both directions (not sure what the rules are now - the only one near me has been overgrown with weeds for at least a decade now so it's unusable anyway). Either way, I wouldn't ride the wrong way down one.
@Foxtrot369
@Foxtrot369 9 ай бұрын
When I was in high school, in 2005, students were told specifically to ride against traffic so we could see what was coming. The majority of incidents were bikes being hit from behind. I'm not saying the driver in this case is 100% at fault, more like 50/50, but it really should be routine to look both directions when pulling out.

I was curious about this, it seemed like it would be the law that you can only ride in the correct direction. But I thought I better check. MyLicence (The SA Govenment website for explanations of road laws) says "If you are riding on a road with a bicycle lane, you must if practicable, ride in the bicycle lane. You may move out of the bicycle lane to avoid debris, potholes, or to safely overtake another bicycle rider. You must only ride in the correct direction in the bicycle lane". So it is indeed the case that these people were being idiots.
@jay-uo2bi
@jay-uo2bi 9 ай бұрын
Rare to see someone genuinely apologetic on this channel. That said at least in QLD, I believe it is the law, and in my opinion logical that you must ride in the same direction as the other lanes. "Direction of travel in a bicycle lane must be the same direction as the traffic in the lane next to the bicycle lane." Bike network should be separate (and actually developed), cycling at half the speed that cars are going with them being entirely invisible behind you is scary.

@@AkiSihtoLook at the road markings - clearly two lanes are merging and the bus is ahead of the cam car. Instead of moaning constantly when he saw the bus, just backing off for a second would have done the trick, but apparently the cam car was happy to potentially injure passengers on the bus. There is this thing called "road craft" where you are courteous to other drivers who signal their intention but might not have quite enough space to move over. We do this in the hope that when we find ourselves in a similar situation other drivers will extend us the same courtesy. Makes things safer and more pleasant all round.
@AkiSihto
@AkiSihto 9 ай бұрын
@@Alex-j7c7yYou are right and I have no idea how I missed the merge. The cam driver is in the wrong. Also who the hell designed this road? Why is there a slip leading to another split into a turn off and a bus lane sortly after a stop of some sort (both were doing more than 30kph under the posted speed). It seems purpose built to vehicles trying to croos through each other as the centre lane traffic tries to exit left and left lane traffic tries to merge all the way right.

@@ryanmorrison4874No? If your wheels lock up your lose braking.
@commodorenut
@commodorenut 9 ай бұрын
@@Soccera0 exactly. Most drivers would simply slam on the brakes and slide if they didn’t have ABS. First time I ever did driver training, ABS was rare (early 1990s). Almost everyone slammed in the brakes and slid. By the end of the day, they learnt to modulate their brake foot, but many still didn’t grasp it as well as they could have. It takes skill and knowing your car’s limits to outbrake what ABS can do, and sadly, 95% (or more) drivers don’t have that. I have proved it myself several times at advanced driving courses I organise for our work reps. I did one in my older car (non-ABS 80s model) and another in one of the company cars. I had the shortest stopping distance out of everyone (likely due to my car weighing only 1400kg vs modern ones being 1700kg to 2t). The main thing was that I know the car so well (I’ve owned these models for over 30 years) that I can brake on the limit (in the dry). Motorsport practice also helps. But you are right, the vast majority of drivers would not be able to stop as short without ABS. That’s the reason you no longer see 2 thick black lines (skid marks) leading up to a rear-ender these days, but there were lots of these “evidence lines” in the 80s & 90s.
@mazwa2007
@mazwa2007 9 ай бұрын

@captainunderpants200
@captainunderpants200 9 ай бұрын
That's incorrect. Unless the road you're entering is choked, you move into the intersection on the green, and if you don't get a gap before the light changes, you make sure oncoming traffic stops, and then clear the intersection. Otherwise, you, and everyone else behind you has to wait another light sequence, and that can happen multiple times when it's busy.

What about the lights that have no green arrows? I'd be stuck on South Rd from 5am till 9pm by that logic! You enter the intersection. If there was no opportunity to go while the light was green, when the traffic opposite has all stopped on amber or then red - you then clear the intersection. The next direction has to wait for you to clear. Plain and simple. An idiot in front of me skipped 3 sets of lights doing this once, not hard to learn the rules!
