My grandma and grandpa had one that looked exactly like this and they used it as an ashtray too LOL IIRC this came as part of a set of four triangular shaped dishes that sat around a large circular dish that would sit in the middle. They were serving dishes originally I believe.

@alohamom23802 жыл бұрын
@@ImAnEmergency That is exactly what I thought. the light accent on the edges and the “bubbles” found on the sides reminded me of pieces we had at home growing up in Hawaii. Nice refinish, for sure! 🌺

This inspired me. I have a yard sale salad bowl that I love but can't use because at some point someone left salad and dressing in it and it looks like it was never cleaned out. I scraped it out at bit but can still see the discolouration at the bottom of the bowl. Now I feel like I can take a proper scraper and keep at it after seeing you restore something that was used as an ashtray! Also the tip about using water to check the colour will be useful.
@rettpanda62032 жыл бұрын
Have you used hot water and dawn dish soap yet?
@JoRiver112 жыл бұрын
@@rettpanda6203 No, I haven't. I was worried about hot water and soap on unfinished wood. (But I guess that more about protecting a good salad bowl that has been oiled properly?). Obviously I'm not a woodworker.

Just want you to know that your videos, and a couple of others', inspired me to fix it the "right" way, and taught me enough to know some of the "right" things to do. Clamps and materials ended up costing me more than the piece itself. Next time I'll be a more careful buyer. All prepped and awaiting glue-pocalypse. Thanks and happy holidays.

But it looks thick enough, and some dark-ish stains on the bottom and sides. I will def follow your advice to clean it up on the outside. And follow your advice on how to attach wood on wood with wood glue. The ear-holder piece came off. I will not fill up the wooden jar with water, though. Maybe use a glass jar inside to put flowers. Or add dried plants into it as decor. Thank you for everything that you do. Your channel and your experience working alongside us have made it so far! So proud of you! ❤ 🪵 🎄

I like the muted shine finish with the steel wool best. Your reference to aught vs naught, etc. reminded me of The Beverly Hillbillies when Jethro went back to school. "Naught times naught, equals...naught." Ha-ha! I have heard mention of "aught" gauge my whole life, but it seems it doesn't actually mean zero in the U.K. like it does in the U.S.A., so that's where people get confused.

Ex-smoker here, practically dry heaved at the thought of what the inside of the bowl must have been like to handle and, also, someone used a WOODEN bowl for an ashtray??? 🤦 Anyway, thank you for rescuing it and restoring it to its former glory. It looks beautiful again! I think that the wood could be sheesham, a type of rosewood. I'm not an expert at all and am only guessing because it's a wood that is commonly used for making bowls, boxes, furniture etc and smaller items like bowls are exported (fairtrade shops like Oxfam and Traidcraft sell a lot of sheesham items). That one looks like a style produced from around the start of this century but might be earlier but the shape could pass for midcentury modern (I just don't recall seeing the shape being around any earlier than the noughties). You might find a bowl like that sold as part of a set of 3 for holding dry snacks although, given the 'history' of this one, maybe use it to hold keys or something rather than food... 🤢

@christopherlamoureux86172 жыл бұрын
The bubbles come from the temperature disparity between the top most layer being too warm while the bottom coats and wood itself is too cold and not thoroughly cured. It's offgasing into the much more cured outer layer. To fix this with finishes that "burn in" into the previous coat (shellac, lacquer, etc) a light sanding (I used 1500 grit) and a light pass with the finish again usually smooths everything out.
