did just as the video for a categorical variable rather than a binary one, when using reg y i.x, where x is the variable I labeled values to, regression output still comes out with x and separates cases but for the values and not the labels: x x.1 x.2 x.3 x.3.... i want to get x label1 label2 insted of the assosiated numerical values... can it be done?

You cannot attach a value label to a string variable; if you would like to convert your string variable to a numeric variable, please type *help encode* . You can then attach a value label to the new numeric variable.

It seems like you don't have enough memory. Please type *compress* in the Stata Command window; this command will check whether the amount of memory used by your data can be reduced. You can then try issuing the command again. If you still get the error, please email us at [e-mail].

One more explanation, please! gender should be categorical/string variable, not byte/Numeric?

The sex variable could be stored as a string variable or as a numeric variable with 2 categories. In the numeric case, value labels can be added (as shown in this video) to identify what each numeric value represents. In some cases, such as including a variable in a regression, it is necessary for the variable to be stored as a numeric variable. If you need to convert from a string to numeric, you can use the *encode* command, which will automatically create value labels for you.
