So, don’t add the fields to the master page? I have a two page spread when I generate the data merge the first page looks perfect but then every other page is a different layout, not the master page layout I want. What am I doing wrong?

No, I didn't add the fields to the Master Page. I did however apply the Master Pages to the Pages I created in that first file. A couple of things to check: - Have you created a full Master Pages spread? i.e. created content on both the left and right Master Pages - Have you applied the Master Pages to the pages you've then designed?
