Whoever wrote this misused the word "obviates". They are using it as if it means "makes obvious", when it actually means to prevent or render something unnecessary. Data would have never made such a mistake. Boy I really hope someone got fired for that blunder.

A G I have heard sentience refer to a state of being or consciousness and perception. Sapience would be a human-level of reasoning. You stated rather 'matter-of-fact'ly that cats do not have self awareness. Depending on what you meant by that specifically, I may be inclined to disagree with you. Animal behavior is magnitudes more complicated than "roll over = treat". These aren't machines we're talking about, but distant relatives to humans. What it is exactly that animals are missing from humans is debatable. In regards to my use of self-awareness I am referring to the fact that humans have the ability to differentiate themselves from their environment which is absent in animals. This is to say that you, in the moment, are able to reflect on your feelings, actions, and the ramifications of those feelings and actions. A cat does not possess this ability. That is not to say that a cat is not of aware of it's surroundings, but rather that it is not aware of itself. I am aware that the thoughts of animals are more complex than action-reaction. An interesting concept to look into is pigeon superstition. However, that does not make animals sentient or self-aware.

No it's not. Data says "and though you are not sentient...". Cats are sentient. They have senses. Nerves. They are able to feel (and quite capable of expressing their feelings by for example purring or screaming with pain). That's what sentience means. Data goes on to say "...and do not comprehend". Comprehension has nothing to do with sentience (although the blanket statement that cats don't comprehend anything may well also be false, but he could be referring specifically to the cat not comprehending his declaration of friendship, which could easily be correct).

Jonhydude Sapience is kind of loosely defined, but it has to do with the ability to reason. Abstract thoughts, weighing hypothetical consequences, self-awareness...stuff like that. One easy way to remember the difference: Sentience sounds a bit like senses. Sapience is a notable characteristic of homo sapiens (and to an extent unconfirmed in many other species). Sentience makes you hungry, and sapience makes you imagine yourself tipping over a tree to get across the water to get to the food without drowning.

He meant sapient, not sentient xD Cats are sentient creatures, as they are able to express a range of emotions (albeit a very short range: discomfort, pleasure, contentedness and anger). They are not, however, sapient. They are unable to percieve at a higher level; they cannot consciously evaluate their emotions or surroundings. They rely on instinct to react to their environment, rather than conscious thought. They are also incapable of expressing empathy, but they can become attached to their owners if they are treated with love and respect.
