There is a possibility that many more beings like yourself can be constructed." Data: "Sir, Lieutenant La Forge's eyes are far superior to human biological eyes, true?" Picard: "M-hm." The best Star Trek characters imo have always been the ones who weren't human and sought to either understand humans better or become human themselves: Spock, Data, Odo, and the Doctor specifically come to mind. Avoiding the religious points on this, Let us see here. If a soul is what makes up a being, their memories, personalities, emotions, experiences, and everything that makes them...well "them"...then yes. Much like the Geth over time developed one, Data too had a soul. Our minds are nothing but fleshy computers, controlled by a combination of electrical and chemical actions and reactions, which allow us to become sentient and sapient, in such a way, we are no different from a machine that has developed the ability to think and feel on it's own. The hardware is different, but it's function is similar. As for the religious point...well. Only God can say one way or the other, but if God is all that is good, kind, loving, and just in reality? Then yes, even an artificial being, born of his children he created, be they human or otherwise, has a soul, and is welcome in his house...for ALL life is sacred, be it man, animal, or machine. At least...that's my thoughts on it.

Actually, during the trial for his sentience, Data states his total memory capacity is 6 quadrillion bits, which translates to about 710.15 Petabytes. That's 284.06 times the total capacity of a human brain. Though he does state that his total instructions per second is about 3000000000000, which is far fewer than the 23650000000000 instructions per second of a Ryzen Threadripper 3900X.

this was beautifully done. after picard, i would say data easily forms the emotional development of the show. he really did became more than the sum of his parts, and the complexities of his character added to the philosophical struggle and nature of the show itself. i, like many other st fans, was devastated upon knowing of data's death in picard, but i think it was ultimately the right choice. data, above all, wanted to be human, and terminating him instead of having his consciousness live forever in a simulation was the only way to respect his wishes. i'd miss seeing data and brent spiner as data, but the wonderful thing about art and television is that it's eternal, and regardless of how old we are, or how much time has passed, we can always go back to tng, and boldly go where no one has gone before.

Star Trek 12 was from the days before spoilers became easy to find. I didn't know about his death until it happened and I was devastated. It killed my interest in Star Trek for years and I'm not sure it recovered. The fact Spiner said he wanted the character to die was a bit of a gut punch. I understand his reasoning but that doesn't mean I have to like it. I wanted so much for there to be Star Trek 13, the Q-est for Data (it was an odd-numbered one so it's OK if it's bad) where Q pops by for a visit and is shocked to learn about Data so he takes Picard on a time-traveling trek to bring him back. Metaphysical hijinks ensue.

As much as science fiction often teach us about the potential dangers and threats of AI, there are a few works that choose instead to inspire us about the potential of AI. Not as servants or disposable labour to be abused, but as new, unique life able to pursue greatness on its own accord. The tale of Lieutenant Commander Data stands as one such story. I can only hope that if we ever succeed in our pursuit of artificial intelligence, we choose to encourage it on his path and not the alternative.

You failed to mention that the reason the simulation existed at the end was because during the Shinzon crisis Data copied his entire memory into B-4, hoping B-4 would suddenly become as sophisticated and capable as Data. It did not work as intended, but shortly after Data's death Capt. Picard was speaking to B-4 who began singing a song that Data had performed prior to finding B-4, suggesting that Data's memories were intact, that it was just taking considerable time for B-4 to absorb and integrate them all. Everything Data was still existed in B-4. In the back story of the video game Star Trek Online they go further and assert that B-4 spends time at the Daystrom Institute whose researchers work to accelerate B-4's intellectual development. Eventually B-4 not only possesses all Data's abilities but comes to believe he is Data. He successfully petitions Starfleet to reinstate him with his prior service record for reference, even earning command of the USS Enterprise-F. In the game he also becomes an advocate for artificial life form rights, leading to holographic crew members being somewhat common in the game.

@@Warden0190 Well they can atleast do the concept and the already known confirmed established lore about it. And all the fan made they can just mention as unconfirmed rumors about the Foundation. Plus the Groups of Interests like the GOC, MC&D, Church of the Broken God, Anderson Robotics, and the Serpents Hand have established lore already. Plus they can do videos about the big SCP cosmic horror gods of the Mythos like the Scarlet King, Yaldabaoth, and Mekhane. Like they did with the Chaos gods. The SCP Mythos has it's set of cosmic terrors that are quite interesting. Quite literally they could do a video about how chaotic, unstable, and how hopeless the SCP Universe is with cosmic gods who eat dimensions, to creatures and devises that could rip continents apart or warp the very fabric of reality itself to cosmic beings above the Elder gods themselves. It would serve quite the interesting video. It just depends how you make it and introduce it. Like what the channel The Exploring Series does with the SCP Mythos.

I absolutely loved this Dossier, but I do feel one person was missed here: His first child Lal from the TNG episode "The Offspring". I know she was only in one episode and that Data's other successors were mentioned, I couldn't help but think about his first wish and attempt to procreate/reproduce. Other then that, this was a highlight for my day. Awesome job!

There is a sadness and a beauty to memories of Data, of all Star Trek, the dream of what might be, shown to us, so real, yet still just a story, not a history, Myth. Myths are what cultures are made of, what drives men's souls, the too perfect world of the Federation, the too corrupt world of Star Wars, the probable world of Firefly, all myths of the future for a species yet to break the bounds of Earth and walk among the stars. Will we find you there, Mister Data? Will you walk with us? Will you lead?

All the characters of TNG and all of Trek are unique and memorable in their own ways. Data I always felt was something I wanted to aspire to in many ways even more than Picard. He had issues he had to resolve and wasn't always aware of the "normal" social mores of society, but he thrived nonetheless and became extremely memorable. Definitely one of my favorite character of TNG
