Great question! Pie charts work best for communicating high-level part-to-whole comparisons. For example, the gray slice is smaller than the orange slide. Usually, anything more specific than that is hard to spot or communicate with a pie chart, as you mentioned. In those cases, bar charts are a safer choice.
