Dataism may be recognized as the general underlying philosophy of big data which holds data as a primary source of truth in its own right. The basic premise is that because Big Data can capture a whole domain, providing a complete high-resolution dataset, there is no need for prior theory, models or hypotheses, as through the application of data analytics the data can speak for themselves free of human bias or framing. Meaning transcends context or domain-specific knowledge and is thus neutral being able to be interpreted by anyone.

This is a dangerous way of thinking. It is not new. More data and more variables usually means more spurious relationships.

@@fxhardy I believe he means that so many things would have false connections due to a possible correlation. This hardly scratches the surface of its problems though. If we actually could create a mass amount of all knowing computer software. What would happen then. Our entire lives would be based off an a few lines of code. Our identities nothing more than planned amalgamations of big data. It could be like 1984, it could create a false correlation and send humans to extinction, maybe big data would decide live is better through pure automation and remove biological life entirely. Then again, we have proven it can be useful. Lean is a computer assistant that’s been programmed with millions of lines of code about mathematical theories. So far this is the closest thing we’ve come to big data, and it has been useful to mathematics thus far. It’s scary, but we’re only getting closer and closer to the science of dataism.
