In this chapter, we discuss the fundamental concepts of database management. We kick off by reviewing popular applications of database technology. This is followed by defining key concepts such as a database and a database management system, or DBMS. Next, we step back in time and discuss the file-based approach and contrast it with the database approach to data management. We then zoom into the elements of a database system. The chapter concludes by discussing the advantages of database design and database management.

I use this book to prepare lectures about application of data base, data warehouse and data analytics in banking. Whereas other books about this topic focus too much on (often unneeded) theoretical details, this book is very successful to bridge the gap between the concepts and applications. The extend of the book covers many aspects needed in daily life and help the students to broaden their view. Besides classical technical topics the book also includes useful issues as Data Integration , Data Quality and Data Governance. The book is recommended in bachelor and master courses; for lecturers and for students. The video are a nice supplement to the book and help to get an even deeper insight to the topic. Thanks a lot !!

Great book to get to know all database concepts and differences between DBMS. The text is clearly structured and the numerous examples make it easy to follow and use it as a handbook in my lectures. Also the online playing environment and extra materials are certainly a plus. Great work!

I’ve reviewed your book. I have to say that I would love to have it a few years ago when I was preparing my lecture: its structure and depth of content is exactly what I needed. Outstanding work! Congratulations!

Jesus, that was brutal. Try putting some emotion into your voice and quit pausing for so long. If it wasn't for the stuttering and slip-ups I would have thought this was a robot text to speech app. I also think my iPhone records better quality audio, you couldn't be bothered to invest in a $20 microphone?

Sorry if I sound rude being so critical but my professor chose to use your textbook for his class and we are required to watch these videos as part of that class. If you don't want to put in the effort to make professional content then you shouldn't make it at all.

That was extremely rude. He is providing these videos for free. If you can't be nice, then don't say anything at all. You should be ashamed of yourself.
