Awesome video series, thanks so much! I'd like to build a rather lightweight solar powered cruising yacht and I'm wondering how FEA is used to engineer composite and fiberglass. Do you need specialized FEA software to simulate these anisotropic materials?

Thanks for your efforts! I always keep watching your great videos. I prefer 1d elem to 2d elem, i sometimes change the elem type when i especially need to check plate bending behavior. Nowadays, a modern modeling software helps us to review disconnection and singularity problems easily. I wonder why need to make the weld joint modeling? Is it for the fatigue analysis? What I know is welding properties are way better than plates.

Any tips or advice that you would add for FEA engineers?

Again, great video. I'd just like to add that, regarding Ansys, the solver actually creates a fully meshed cross section, however will plot the results of the section as a whole, depending on the solver settings. Also, that although plate elements are indeed preferred, they can be hard to model depending on the region of the ship, specially at the fore/aft ends. It is another problematic point for mesh generation due to the topography. Line elements produces mesh faster and are also easier on the number of equations too. Finally, depending on the software you are using to produce the model, most of the line body problems that you mentioned are trivially solved.

Thanks! I love to see comments from other FEA users. Helps me add new perspectives on my own modeling strategies. I admit that I frequently adapt my modeling strategy based on the needs of the individual project.

For my Mtech thesis, FEA analysis of Ship structure, I have considered a rectangular Barge, did hydrodynamic analysis using Ansys Aqwa (Linear wave of 1 m amplitude), transferred the load using apdl script to Ansys static structure in workbench. How can i ensure that load has been correctly transferred. I have applied boundary condition similar to what specified in DNV guidelines. But Iam not sure whether analysis done by me is correct. Can you please additionally give guidelines for boundary condition of ship structure.

is there a book for these tips?

Sorry, no book. But you can read more articles about FEA on the DMS website: www.dmsonline.us/six-keys-better-marine-fea/
