I really only had two friends growing up: Leedo and Keonhee. Because Keonhee lived right next door, I spent a lot more time with him than with Leedo, and he quickly became my best friend and regular study buddy.

During high school, I developed a bit of a crush on a fellow student by the name of Hwanwoong. I thought he was pretty cute, and apparently, he thought the same about me; he asked me out on a date, but Keonhee didn't seem very happy about it. When I confronted him, he came out with some lame reason before finally admitting that he was jealous. I was taken aback by this - the possibility of my best friend developing feelings for me was something that had never occurred to me. But when I thought about it, I realised that my crush on Hwanwoong was just that - a crush. Keonhee was the one who had always been there for me and knew me like no other. He had been my rock when my parents divorced just a couple of years earlier. After admitting this to him, Keonhee and I shared our first kiss, and he asked me to be his girlfriend.

We had been dating secretly for about two months when we received some news that shook up the both of us: Keonhee's father, whose wife had died not long after giving birth to Keonhee, had asked my mother to marry him, and she had accepted. That meant Keonhee and I would be step-siblings. Reluctantly, we decided it would be best to break off the relationship.

High school drew to a close with Keonhee and I becoming more and more awkward around each other. We both found it difficult to accept what had happened, and even more so to pretend it hadn't affected us that deeply. We knew our parents expected us to be overjoyed at the thought of being siblings, since we had always been so close, and we had to act accordingly. Prom, the final celebration of our high school years before graduation, was a slightly depressing affair, despite the honour of being crowned Prom Queen. My other friend from childhood, Leedo, received the title of Prom King, and I enjoyed spending much of the evening in his company instead of having to endure the awkward atmosphere that now came with Keonhee's presence. Leedo had kind of drifted away from Keonhee and I during high school, and I realised that evening that he was growing into an extremely attractive young man.

It's funny how life never leads us where we expect. I thought I knew exactly where Keonhee and I would end up in life - on completely different career paths, but as close as we'd ever been. But that is not how things turned out. Instead, we both ended up working at the company owned by Keonhee's father, and within five years, he had retired and passed ownership over to Keonhee. To say it felt weird working for him would be an understatement.
