@@SlR-Having a dysfunctional family is 100% a red flag, but it doesn't make one a red flag for sure. I come from a dysfunctional family that I don't speak to, but I've always been family oriented so it doesn't mean you wouldn't prioritize the family you chose to make. I wouldn't mind someone not dating me because of that, dating is discriminatory by nature.

the amount of them saying “people with a bad relationship with their family” as a red flag was honestly off putting. people sometimes have to know that a lot of the time when someone has a bad family relationship it’s because the parents were physically abusive, verbally abusive, or controlling. i have a bad relationship with my parents because they use physical discipline such as hitting me and restraining me, and would starve me and not let me have meals if i didn’t get an a on an assignment. i’m still family oriented

I have SUCH an issue with people who write people off when they have difficult familial relationships, or call it a “red flag“. It’s personal for me, I realize.. but man… there’s so much room for nuance there. What about kids who grew up in physically abusive situations? Or kids who’s parents were addicts? There are so many thing that could have happened that are not the child’s fault.

@@SlR- absolutely not. Come on man.. where’s your empathy? Your comment is so insulting and off based.. I would assume the exact opposite. Not sure where you get the idea that growing up in an abusive home means your more likely to hit your own spouse/kids. Maybe try to think of it as if you grew up in a family where there was physical abuse, you are far less likely to abuse your own family members after knowing first hand what the impact of that was on you and having had to put in the work to overcome those circumstances. Many people who grew up in bad situations seek out therapy and other forms of professional council. Many people who have experienced abuse, have heightened levels of empathy and a strong sense of emotional awareness, ESPECIALLY if they had both the awareness to recognize unhealthy behavior and the strength to then exit those unhealthy relationships. That’s a big step to take, and it takes immense social and emotional awareness, bravery and hope. Many people who grow up in abusive homes spend a lot of time working on themselves. Quite the exact opposite of your offensive assumptions. And if anyone is reading this thread that has a strained relationship with their parents, I hope you do not allow the ignorance of those who don’t understand your story, to keep you in a box. I see you- be well.

@@jennyinouterspace I’m sorry you found my comment offensive and insulting, I was really trying to present the opinion in an object and factual way. I understand that many people who grew up in abusive environments work on themselves to fight against the effects of that but even just that sentence itself is acknowledging that there ARE in fact effects of abusive or even just not great parents. Many people who were abused are great, I agree, my own parents included. But there are also many who aren’t. You’ve used anecdotes to support your point and say that I’m making ‘insulting *assumptions*’ however they’re not just assumptions. If you’d like to research further on how the claims I’ve made are quite factual, look into: WomensHealth.gov “Effects of Domestic Violence on Children” Backing up my claim the children who see parent’s abuse each other are more likely to abuse future partners. Or see: NationWideChildrens.org “Addiction” Claiming that children from parents with substance addiction are much more likely to abuse substances themselves. There are many more sources to cite on this matter. Again I know that this is personal to you and I’ve tried to write this comment as passively and inoffensively as possible. I’m sorry if it offends you, I’ll reiterate that I agree growing up in an abusive/dysfunctional household is NOT YOUR FAULT and I have sympathy for people that have. But it’s also a fact that that situation has lasting affects (usually negative) on the child. You can overcome them for sure but even for many that do, it takes the whole span of their life. I hope you have a great day anyone who’s read this far.

The end with the pooping story was the highlight for me 😂 About the toxic families, some people just don't know because their reality is far removed from it. If they knew or thought about it they'd phrase the red flag differently. Like its a red flag if you hear "my parents are embarrassing because they're old, my family is embarrassing because we're poor" etc. Having a bad relationship with your family because of the above is a red flag. Having a bad relationship with bad family and keeping a healthy distance or being completely cut off from them is a green flag for them and for you.

@SlR-
@SlR- Жыл бұрын
Ik that's harsh as a red flag but try see it as less of "Your family was fine but you don't have a good relationship with them so you're not fine" but more that even though it's not your fault that you were born into a bad family it has still *probably* affected you negatively. e.g. just statistically, if you grew up in a family where your parents physically abused each other, you're more likely to physically abuse your partner. Like if your parents solved arguments through shouting matches it's more difficult for their child to learn how to solve issues openly with gentle communication. Again, it's not 'fair', it's not your fault, but it is logical.

@@candysweet434You completely misinterpreted what the original commentor was saying. No one said "You shouldn't want people to like your music or the art you create!!!!" Did anyone say that? No. They're exposing the contradiction of someone saying "Narcissistic tendencies are red flags" (which...fair enough. They most definitely are) and then saying someone HAS to like your music. Is that the same as WANTING them to like your music? No. "I want someone to like my music." "They HAVE TO like my music." Obviously these are two totally different statements. This is why it's important to actually read in context.

Pooping your pants is the most non red flag in the context of relationships and interpersonal dynamics because it has nothing to do with relationships at all. You could try to force some weird conclusion in your head of "If they poop their pants a lot, they probably are careless, and that could affect a relationship" but that's just weird speculations. They could just have health issues🤷🏾‍♂️ Its not a relationship red flag cause it has nothing to do with relationships.
