Hey everyone! We're back to the series that's been long incoming. I decided to showcase Turkey in the video; while only the West part of Turkey is considered Balkan, the word "Balkan" is actually Turkish and means mountains. I felt it would be more fun to include Turkey in the mix! Also we make a mistake at one instance in the video; editing slip up - this happens as you can probably imagine. We are not AI machines making these videos - please keep that in mind. By the way, if you're interested in buying a Balkan themed gift for a friend - check out the DBB merch store here and use the code BEYONDBORDERS to get 20% off. marina-1-shop.fourthwall.com

@@Zdamaneta Exactly. It's always funny to me seeing Romanians thinking we're "brothers" of Western Latin countries (Spain, France, Italy) because of our language (which also led to a lot of Romanian artists singing in their language and claiming to be Latinos, absolute cringe💀); when in reality, what they think of us is that we're begging/thieving Gypsies (and add to that prostitutes if you're a woman). Likewise, the ones thinking Serbs or Bulgarians are their "brothers" are also delusional (not as much as the ones I mentioned first, but still). They don't have a "good" image of us like the Portuguese in Spain (and viceversa) where they know they are very similar culturally; or likewise how Norwegians would be seen in Sweden or Denmark. No, our situation is different, because our neighbours either think we're all Roma and live in an absolute shithole country (they probably think we live like the people from Borat) or they claim the "few white European" Romanians (they think they exist) and say that those are just Romanianised Slavs. The only "friends" we have are Moldovans, and even them can be quite something sometimes.

I'm glad that the Serbian girl said about the Romanians that are nice people. Yes, they are! I am from eastern Serbia, my home have a view on Romanian side, and we can talk Romanian and understand them. Long time ago there were a lot of Romanians in my area, I grew up with one in the house who helped my grandfather with farming. When we were in crisis, Romanians brought clothes, food and sold them to us, they never tried to beat us with the prices, because we are in crisis, on the contrary! Many people in eastern Serbia have family or roots in Romania. Many women married Serbs and stayed in Serbia. So, Romanians are a hardworking and honorable people, everyone I met has a good soul. People in my area think the same! We still remember some who went further in search of a better life. Maybe people in the rest of Serbia don't know Romanians that much, which is logical because they don't share a border with them. I also want to say that they are very hardworking and honorable people. We lived well with Romanians! 🇷🇸🇷🇴

Romania has parts of its national territory that are found in the historical Balkans. The problem is different! The peoples of the Balkans have a visceral hatred towards the Romanians. Romanian culture had and has a major contribution in affirming the identity of the Aromanians/Vlachs/Makedo-Romanians/Istro-Romanians in the Balkans. And this is very depressing for the Balkan countries that feel "bit on the hat" for the pitiful way of trying to assimilate them. Do not forget that the south of Romania is called Wallachia (land of the Vlachs). The political leaders of the Balkan countries make propaganda and deliberately induce among their own citizens tendentious, biased, and ill-intentioned concepts about the Romanian people as if they were a people of gypsies. For it to be denigrated and disregarded and, thus, to be destroyed, and its vibrant culture to be assimilated by other "deserving countries". Do not forget that the Romanians had major contributions to forming some states in the Balkans. As thanks, they only knew how to demigrate and humiliate the Romanian people. Shame on you!

Further evidence that Romanians don't have "brothers" and that we're pretty much alone in Europe. It's over when shittier countries than yours (and, likewise, countries with a similar or even higher Roma population) think their country is actually better lol. The funniest thing to me is that the women who were like "Gypsies, Gypsies, c'mon" will probably later go to a Black Lives Matter protest or have "✊🏻✊🏼✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿" in their bios. Eastern Europeans (and here, I'd include even us Romanians) will be very vocal about someone being racist or prejudiced against them (bet that if they were called Russians they would get instantly offended lol but hey, Romanians are still "Gypsies" despite having almost nothing in common); but will say nothing or even participate in their own country's ethnic issues (or, really, any social issue their country might face). Funniest thing to me was the N. Macedonian and the Bulgarian chicks, when their country is much more Roma and more Roma influenced than Romania lol. Apparently Romania is the least known country from what I noticed, all they know is negative stuff and gypsies even though they are under 10% of the total population of Romania. If we wouldn't have the gypsy minority to create a negative image for our country, nobody would know anything about Romania, it would be like a big question mark... we would probably be as unknown as Lichtenstein, Latvia or Andorra...

Turkey is indeed a part of Balkan, not only genetically or geographically but also culturally. I'm not saying all Turkey, of course, east of Turkey is very different from the west of Turkey. East is Middle Eastern, west is more East European. Thanks for including Turkey. I think the debate on whether or not Turkey is Balkan, is quite unneccessarry. We have more Albanians in Turkey than in Albania, that alone makes Turkey partially Balkan. I'm a 3rd gen immigrant myself. There are millions of people like me. As I grew older I questioned these prejudices more and more. When I started working blue-collar, every single prejudice got whiped away. There are soooo many people from the Balkans working blue-collar in Germany and most of which I met were the most heart warming people. As I love traveling by train, I visited Croatia and Poland. Both times people were very welcoming. Romania is now on my bucket list. Can't believe how such beautiful and rich cultures get such a bad reputation through only a few bad people. 🇩🇪 🇭🇷 🇷🇴 🇵🇱

I love these videos, they are always interesting. I'm French and I've never visited Balkan countries, except if Greece and Turkey are counted in them. I haven't actually met people from Croatia or Serbia, but I have the other nations. I even had a penfriend in Bulgaria when I was young during the communist era. In France, we consider Romania a sister culture. All the Romanian people I met were always super nice and well educated. Rromani people are a very different people to Romanians and that is usually very clear for French people. France also has its own gypsies traditionally in the South of France, famous for their music, like is the case in Spain, and they are called Manouches. Romania to me evokes primarily Ionesco, Inna and Nadia Comăneci, as well as beautiful blouses. Bulgaria to me evokes roses, Bulgarian Voices singers, elaborate nosiyas and the creation of the cyrillic alphabet. Serbia is the land of Vesna Vulović and Nikola Tesla. Croatia gave us the word "cravatte" (for necktie) and was already a popular seaside destination with French tourists during Yugoslavian times. North Macedonia is less well-known except for its exquisite feta that became quite popular at least in Paris when many ex-Yugoslavs took refuge in France. One of my best friends is half Bosnian, one of my best neighbours Albanian. I traveled to Greece and Turkey several times and loved both places. I wish to visit all the other ones.

1) - Romania is NOT a Balkan country 2) - some Balkan people call us as Gypsy, but what they don't know is that THEY look and behave more like Gypsy than us. Never forget that the Gypsies arrived to Romania (first historical document mentions them in Southern Romania in 1385) from the Balkans, Greece, Bulgaria and Turkey. And the Romanian word for Gypsies is "țigan" (read as "tsigahn") as a derivation of the Greek word "Athinganos" (plural : "Athinganoi") = Indo-Greeks (Byzantines). They have been brought to us by the Greek monks as monastery slaves in the 14-15 century. They also arrives from the East as slaves brought by the Tatars. The Gypsies (Hindu) left India around the year 400 AD migrating to the West. Nobody knows for sure the reason they left their original place, India. 3) - the Gypsy myth about Romanians show how ignorant they are, also the Westerners. I met a British man in 1999 saying to me that Romania comes from Roma people. When I told him that Romania comes from Roma (Italy) and Romans, he was like mind blocked (lack of history knowledge). 4) - the truth is that most of the people, no matter their origin, they are really ignorant about their neighbours or other people, they live on myths.

In fact, you are talking about some tendentious debate regarding our continuity, some guys have INTERESTES saying we haven't Roman descendance (i.g : Russians say to Moldavians they are not Romanians, but Moldavians. The Sebs say to Romanians in Serbia that they are not Romanians, but Vlachs which acctually is the same). Hangarians also lie about our heritage. All perverse INTERESTS. Talking about the Westerners, they know almost nothing about themselves, so what else could they know about us ? Why do you think all these debate is ONLY about the Romanians in the whole Europe ? Do you know that most of the ancient texts about Dacians (us) have been...lost ? The Roman Emperor Trajan wrote a book about his wars in Dacia : "The Commentarii de bellis Dacicis / Comments on the Dacian wars"...the chapters about Dacians are missing..."lost". Isn't that strange, and I can give you another 20-30 examples. SOMEBODY wants us...lost. I understand your frustration, however be aware that you live far away and do not know the realities in this area anylonger. Gypsies are indeed looked down at in all Balkan countries. People tend to stay away from them, children are advised to avoid them as much as possible. But this is not because they are gypsies, i.e. they belong to an ethnic group and have some indian origin. No, this happens because their behaviours .They refuse to educate and then integrate into the society, they continue to be their way and that way is far from what is accepted by society. No gypsy who is integrated into the society is looked down at just because he might have a browner skin, people would not even note that as we are generally dark skinned ourselves (compared to western people)

I find it ironic and hypocritical that these nations, which have a higher percentage of gypsies than Romania, consider Romanians gypsies. The Balkans will never be united, not because of the Americans or as some here claim, but because of ignorance, lack of education and often ill will. Most of the time, mass media and politics create problems and toxic misinformation. 1. In Romania there are between 3%-5% Gypsies. 2. Romania is poor compared to the rich EU countries, but much richer than the Balkan countries. 3. I think that Romania's relationship with Poland is better than with the Balkans, who don't even know each other and treat each other as gypsies. If these words came from the British, who are on the other side of Europe, I would understand, but they come from the Balkans, who have the same problem with this ethnic group. You really don't know that gypsies come from India and that they are just a nomadic minority?!

Its a only a local tale nothing more nothing less. As a Bulgarian i love Romania in fact since i live in Pleven there is a village called Debovo which as a kid my grandparents would speak the aromanian language with neighbors since Vlachs use to live there a long time ago. I find that fascinating how Bulgarians would speak a Vlach language, and the fact the favore dish for many people from Debovo is "moare de peşte" it means that no one truly hates people from Romania. There is no ignorance, lack of education and often ill will, its just a saying that many associate with the wrong words. Bulgarians and Romanians are like brother and sister, i mean Ruse (little vienna) literally has a boat that you can take to the Romania. Dont take everything you see on the internet as truth. To a lot of people the only thing that unites someone and makes them feel at home is finding someone from the balkans in a foreign country. I would be so happy if i meet someone who is close to my country and would treat them with respect. In the end of the day we are all brothers and sisters.

1. Just to confirm what has already been mentioned: No-one calls the Serbians gypsies in Greece. 2. No-one calls Albanians gypsies in Greece. 3. In fact, I can’t remember anyone calling any Romanian gypsy in Greece, or associate them in any way. It was much later in my life that I learned that there is a relatively big population of them in Romania. 4. For the girl from North Macedonia who loves Bulgaria. You look very surprised, no-one has told you you are basically the same nation? 5. There isn’t Bulgarian feta or any other feta apart from Greek feta. There are other white cheeses produced in Bulgaria and Turkey, that I am sure they are delicious and I would try them if I wasn’t so obsessed and eating everything with feta. So leave the feta alone please! 6. The Greek girl should have left the country when she was really young. Greece is a 100% balkan country, we are all bad drivers, the food is similar, we avoid paying taxes and then blame the government, dances are similar, we look similar. So at the end when we all hate our neighbors, it’s like we hate ourselves, which we all do as well.

So its a shame to be balkan while its not a shame to be an american or a spanish Who killed too many people on this planet and commit many crimes, but balkan people somehow are perceived as a big threat to greek people. GREEKS cant breath because of balkan people? Whats the explanation of this hatred towards the Balkans? I can't believe how easily Romanians are called gypsies, this shows me the lack of education and insensitivity of others. While all the Europeans campaign falsely for the lack of discrimination and racism, instead throwing stones at the Gypsies, we Romanians are the ones who have accepted them into the community and tried to integrate them, while everyone is driving them away. First of all, Gypsies are originally from India, they are spread all over the globe. Gypsies are a minority ethnicity in Romania, and it is different from the Romanian ethnicity. Many gypsies have adapted to today's society and are very ok people, but they are still a part that refuses integration, education and with which we also have problems in Romania, not only Europe. Secondly, emphasis has always been placed on what the gypsies in Romania have done negatively in other countries, of course we will not talk about so many Romanians who work honestly abroad, who do good and beautiful things wherever they go. Before you start spouting nonsense, better inform yourself, don't speak from stories and what others say.

Google "Thrace" and you can see that Turkey has a part of Balkan lands too. Also the "population exchange" between Greece and Turkey had effects and there are many people from Bulgaria who are Turkish citizens for years. Also there are millions of "Muhacir"s (estimated 10 million Ottoman Muslim citizens, and their descendants born after the onset of the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire who emigrated to East Thrace and Anatolia from the late 18th century until the end of the 20th century, mainly to escape ongoing persecution in their homelands). Especially recently there are more than 10 million Syrians have immigratred to Turkey, many people from Africa and Ukraine with the recent events. So I do think Turkey is now like a mini USA in terms of diversity. Can't compare with the Bulgaria or any other Southern european country.

Albanian have their our own language, its considered to be one of the oldest language) Albania like Greece, and the neighbor countries have Gypsies who speak their own language, they are known for ROMA people! I'm Albanian American, I dated & married to Montenegro Orthodox /Serb!great people & great loving family who love & respect me & I love & respect them! I speak three languages! Albanian, Serbian, and English. Albanians also move their head on the opposite when & also saying "NO" with mouth & not speaking . Shkoder, Albanian all they do is tell jokes. Albanians love to dance & have fun, they have great hospitality, and they have BESA, they are very family oriented, modes mixed with conservative. The elder is respected, old guys get together in local parks & play domino, cards or shah, women get together in park bring their grandchildren along, they knit, or crotiat, they love to socialise & they are very friendly & neighborly, they call each other for coffee thet chit chat, they talk how proud they are of their successful children! At night young people the adolitent the high schoolers & college go to clubs, couples go out for walk at pijaca /downtown it's called "Xhiro" they stop at a locals coffee shop for a coffee & desert, diner or Ice-cream, if they have young children they take them at parks. Do you know that all the stores close between 3pm-5pm? They love taking nape. Albanians food is so similar with Turkish, Greek, Italian, & Bulgarian, www.chefspencil.com/most-popular-albanian-foods/ Albania it's amazing place to visit! Alex Soros visits Albania, he call it "Jewel of balkan" although I'm not big fan of him at all! Do you know that Ivanka Trump vacation in Ksamil, Albania? I don't understand why Greeks & Serbian hate Albanians? I went to a wedding in Montenegro and they dont play one Albanian song, while 1/2 of guess where Albanians, if you go in Shkoder, they play all kind of music, from Serbian, Italian, to Greek, Turkish and English. I think need to leave grunges on side & we should love & respect each other as neighbours should!

Then you must have spent enough time on the coast to pick up what we call the "water". 😂 Tourists will ask if the "water" is warm, and our response (I'm Dalmatian) is "you mean the sea?"
