Season 23 is the last season in Destiny 2 as we will soon be moving to a different live service format in episodes. Which means I'm not gonna have to remake a tier list down the road for this and we can probably just make the call here.

I started in Arrivals and honestly it was the best for me. It had the most content, plus it was the last season before everything got sunset *EDIT:* Since people aren't understanding, I started playing D2 in Season of Arrivals as it was on the xbox gamepass at the time. I had the experience to play every single piece of now sunset content. All the old DLC, all the old content. I do miss the exotic missions, and campaign missions on Titan. And honestly Curse of Osiris wasn't bad; especially fighting Panoptes. The one strike that had the giant cyclops was good too. Hell, getting to enjoy Black Armoury was great too, still have some of my BA weapons in the vault. The menagerie was the best activity to play, Gambit had Reckoning and Gambit Prime (I miss prime) and most importantly I had the option to get Bad Juju and Sagira's Shell legitimately through their associated quests. All in all, as a player who started on the Gamepass; I had a LOT of content to enjoy

Did you know: In Destiny 1 we actually got a raid for House of Wolves, it was the Skolas run of Prison of Elders, this was because upon completion if you had not already completed a raid you would unlock the raid achievement.

I 100% agree. Gambit had THE most potential to be the best this game could offer, it just fell so short. I think that the 3 things the mode desperately needed was better loot, an endgame activity similar to gm's and trials (something like gambit prime, just implemented a little better), and better game balancing to make it so that 1 person (a goated invader) could carry the team to victory.

I would put The Taken King campaign over Forsaken. The Taken King involved so much more of the world of Destiny compared to the Forsaken, which was basically just players running around the Tangled Shore where as in the Taken King we were going to The Cosmodrome, Mars and the Dreadnaught and including all of the Vanguard, Amanda Holiday and Eris with some cheeky involvement with the Reef and the constant back and forth we were doing with Oryx.

Shadowkeep was 100% better than Lightfall, here's why: Shadowkeep had an objectively good Raid and Race, especially compared to Root of Nightmares. It also had the best Raid Exotic in Destiny History (Divinity was a requirement for world first races for the following 3 years) Shadowkeep had a dungeon included It also brought the moon back from D1, which was something a lot of players had been begging for (for some reason). Shadowkeep also added Champions which the game desperately needed back then. It also added the artifact system, as well as reworking the entire mod/armor system (Armor 2.0 was the name I believe). It started the current seasonal model which remained largely unchanged for 5 years (for better or worse) The story wasn't good, but it was the beginning of the "coherent story" Bungie promised us with the Light and Dark Saga. Shadowkeep was also made exclusively by Bungie after the Activision split. They did pretty good considering the new budget/staff limitations. Lightfall on the other hand was near the end of the saga and followed Witch Queen, their best Expansion release ever in terms of sales. There was ZERO reason for them to mess Lightfall up that badly (Obviously a management issue and not the devs faults).

@@lordpumpkinhead265 I thought about it and they're right. The only ones that are even comparable are Vex Mythoclast before it was nerfed (that thing was a monster) and Outbreak Prime. Then in D2 you had One Thousand Voices and Anarchy in a few metas. Meanwhile Divinity was a staple for almost every single D2 raid encounter. As a support main I almost always had it on whenever I did a raid.

@@lordpumpkinhead265As I said, Divinity was a requirement for all raid races after Shadowkeep. Every single winning team for the next 3 years had someone running Divinity. Bungie compared it's usage in Raids to Well of Radience lol. No other Raid weapon remained broken for that long, not even Anarchy. Raid Races are the highest tier content in the entire game, so the fact that it was the most consistently used raid exotic over such a long time means it was objectively the best. Bungie had to nerf it by 50%, which is pretty drastic. It shows how broken it was, at least for the end game.

I stopped playing after D2 launch and didn’t get back into until shadowkeep (steam launch). I had fun but had issues with the game still. During season of arrivals though, the spark came while running all of the content that was getting put away for BL. While the season didn’t have the best content in it, it was the most enjoyable time for me in D2.

Traumatized Reckoner here with my Hot Gambit Take: Gambit Prime and its respective armor sets were a GREAT idea hampered by several major issues: #1, THE GRIND / Reckoning and overall game imbalance issues. Grinding out the sets was EXCRUCIATING and overly complex, endemic of the same kind of 'we need to wring every minute of game time from our playerbase' that brought us other such brilliant concepts like Synthweave/plate/cord and other pointlessly long/unfun grinds, AND it was compounded by a downright unfair level of difficulty in order to try and balance out Guardians' out of control power creep at that time. #2, The armor sets were a stepping stone to the armor mod system / Armor 2.0, which was not implemented until later that year. Having FOUR distinct sets of armor for each role was a ridiculous decision that may have been an unavoidable hurdle because given the proximity between Gambit Prime and Armor 2.0's releases, they must've already been conceptualizing / thinking of the Armor Mod system but I'm sure delaying Gambit Prime wasn't an option. On the other side, they never took the opportunity to go back and 'fix' the system by making a single set of Gambit Prime armor that was easy to obtain, and easy to swap between roles/sets by just changing an intrinsic armor mod. Perhaps because player engagement was already starting to falter? But also-- #3, they stopped meaningfully adding to the mode. What was initially pitched as a third pillar to core Destiny gameplay started to get less and less support pretty quickly. Sure they put some cool weapons in there, but that doesn't matter much when you're running around in the same arenas, against the same bosses, with an unchanging meta, against other players who cook the Primeval in 45 seconds. I firmly believe that there is another timeline not far from the one we're in where Gambit Prime became the default Gambit experience, brought together the polarized Crucible / PvE communities, had a broader range of arenas and enemies, and most importantly, helped evolve the passive set bonus aspects of Destiny's perpetually shallow armor experience across the whole of the game. Weapons have come so far in Destiny's tenure, but I've been rocking the same armor sets for YEARS now with no real incentive / urge to get new shit other than to unlock it for transmog. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

As someone that also absolutely loved Arrivals I think I know why its so fondly remembered First, everyone was deep in lockdown and kind of accepted that was gonna be a case We had raid nights, because so much was going away now was the time to do all the Raids and get all the Exotics. Activity was fun, simple. Witherhoard pilled. I feel it was the moment where the game had the most, varied content. I don't play Destiny anymore because there is too much to do that "feels" like a chore.

Season of the Splicer and Haunted are literally the most Goated seasons for me. Both were such vibes and i do feel that Lightfall definitely ripped off the vibes of splicer because of player sentiment. Firefright w/ Osmosis is still one of my favorite and most used weapons to this day, from Haunted. Also adding a new patrol zone (while not new) is pretty insane for a season.

Realistic expectations aside, if TFS isn't the best expansion in Destiny history, or at least comparable to Forsaken/TTK, I don't have faith that Bungie is committed to delivering a good product. TFS is the final expansion in their 10-year saga, we have had over a year of blatant filler content, and Bungie had been cutting corners for years preceding Lightfall. They have accumulated plenty of resources/time to deliver an exemplary expansion, so if it isn't S-tier, what have they been doing for the past 5 years? Not to mention, Bungie has literally said that they are aiming for it to be as high-quality as Forsaken and TTK, so if they don't deliver to at least that level, they might as well be putting Destiny out to pasture.

The only real Nine content we've gotten has been Trials of the Nine (lol), The Reckoning (also lol), and Prophecy (my favorite dungeon). We haven't had any real insight into the Nine since Arrivals. And Bungie clearly haven't forgotten about them, considering Prophecy being updated and the Drifter mentioning them. I guess ever since the Witness showed up they've just been chilling. Like seriously. They'll intervene to allow the Cabal to invade the Last City, but suddenly disappear when the Witness wants to end all life in the universe? Such a missed opportunity.

I will say this now. I started playing back in Season of the Haunted as a brand new player, never touching the game before then. So I hold Season of the Haunted as an A because of that ontop of liking the seasonal activities. BUUUUT Season of the Plunder was so awful that even as a new player, I quit 2 weeks into it, and didn't come back til a week before Lightfall. So Plunder bored me so much I missed potentially one of the best seasons in the game's history too (Seraph). I wasn't there for a lot of the really bad seasons before but even I knew Plunder was really bad, and the Ketchcrashes were insanely buggy for weeks after launch which wasn't a good look. Constant softlocks were the main thing about those.

You touched on it but I REALLY don't think the first 7 "seasons" are fair to be considered compared to 8-23 since they were all expansions/mini-expansions vs being dropped as seasons as we know them today (seasons 8-23).

I had taken a break after Osiris and then came back for arrivals. So I missed several seasons and I only played half of hunt but I played regularly after that. Witherhoard still great.

I’d like to remind everyone that this came out of nowhere and it was at a time when destiny was in a sever content drought after not one of destiny’s best performing seasons. Destiny’s player count was at its lowest point at the time so many people straight up didn’t see it.

Genuine question, what the hell is up with the overwhelming praise for the Coil? It's a good activity for sure, don't get me wrong, but it's only barely different than everything else we ever get. What about the coil is making people go absolutely bonkers for it?

Most fun I've had in PvE was with sunshot and warmind cells. Peak PvE imo, and i still have my original sunshot pushing 90k on it now. This season w\ the artifact mods and coil is a close 2nd.

About to start now. Really trusting Datto's eternal mind to remember that people HATED Black Armory at launch, and not to let the "old stuff is always better" glasses get in the way of historical truth. Edit: thank goodness Datto doesn't drink the idiot Kool-Aid, man knows what he's doing. The video also proves what the knowers always knew: that most of the content in this game is good content (as the polls showed), but the giant idiots are so loud that people think there are more of them than there actually are.

Enjoyed this, but I don't think comparing seasons against expansions (even smaller ones like CoS & Warmind) really works, as the expansions are objectively better. Edit: also, the Forsaken campaign was great. Yes, WQ was better to play, but the cutscene that introduced all the barons still sticks with me to this day. Forsaken's narrative was simple, yet incredibly effective. Edit 2: There's also some crossing of boundaries going on here. Void 3.0 and Prophecy for example are absolutely not part of their respective seasons, they were just free to play additions. I know this type of thing is often acknowledged throughout though. :b

LITERALLY ONLY Season of Seraph, Chosen, Lost and Opulence r good (not in any order).

(Not so) Fun fact: Season of the Dawn and Season of the Plunder contained the only 2 times that Bungie ever had to do a full game-state rollback. In Dawn, it was due to a massive economic exploit and in Plunder, it was due to many people’s triumphs being reset after an update
