When we all get together it is amazing what nonsense we think makes sense and we all agree about. ONly when, as he does here, tries to explain to someone who is not party to the conventions, do we see how stupid it all really is. Time is but a small example of this. He was a genius for seeing the nonsense in everyday life and our ridiculous our conventions truly are. I miss him a lot
@mizuno91247 жыл бұрын
The whole imperial measurement system(The one the US uses), is also part of this, makes no sense compared to the simple and easy metric system. America please, it's 21centuary!
@Turrican606 жыл бұрын
petereuk52: I take the points you're making, but I very slightly disagree. On the contrary, much of the machinery of everyday life makes perfect sense when you stop and think about it - and yes, that includes the traditional clock face. If such things didn't make sense, then Mankind would have devised far better alternatives by now and ceased using such methods long ago. In the case of time measurement, our system is solely determined by the Earth's rotation and orbit around the sun. Accordingly, as it's a cosmic event, we have no choice in the matter where our time system is concerned, ergo it's not at all "stupid". The Dave Allen 'way' was to simply take the extremely ordinary (or exceedingly familiar), and twist it into something that, on the surface at least, APPEARED to be utterly nonsensical. Such an approach takes exceptional talent to pull off with genuine conviction, swagger and style....and that's why, even to this day, I still regard him as the greatest comedian of all time. Many have stolen a few pages from Dave's unique book of humour, but none have even got close to touching this much-missed, genius of a comic. He's an absolute legend.
@Turrican606 жыл бұрын
MiZunoX L: Personally, I'm equally happy using the Imperial system (UK) or the metric system as I'm fully conversant with both. There again, I suppose I was lucky enough to be raised at a time when both systems were in common usage in Britain...plus I entered into a career where precise measurement in both these systems was essential. Oddly enough though, I prefer the traditional Imperial system for some weird reason, lol ;-)
@E101ification6 жыл бұрын
I don't think the point is that these 'conventions' are 'stupid', merely that we take for granted how easy to understand they are because we're used to them, and we forget that to an outsider or newcomer they're incredibly complicated to master.
@crystallineblue43445 жыл бұрын
@@Turrican60 the Imperial measurement system is 'friendlier'. Here in Canada, metric is widely accepted for pumping gas, laboratory tests, road signs, ordering industrial materials, etc. But personal measurements such as recipes, birth announcements, our height/weight, etc, majority of us prefer imperial.
