The most genius sketch ever at illustrating both the absurdities of the English language, and understanding and relating so lovingly to the mind of any young child. I wish I was a child of Ireland in many ways - they just seem to 'get it' all so well and have a laugh at the same time..

My little boy has problem reading books even though he managed to graduate from pre-school. The trainer sensed concerns that he might be able to enroll grade and advised to hold him back. But I didn’t stop trying right until I discovered this particular *4ChildrenReading. Com* a reading guidebook. His own reading abilities are excellent for the 1st grade student and also his development definitely surprised the trainer. She also stated the story to other people.

He was a devoted fan of Dave Allen and whenever he was on TV we kids would have to sit in absolute silence in case we made a noise and he missed any of the jokes. My dad's favourite comedian. I injured my leg laughing so much at one of his live gigs in Melbourne back in he 80's. The injury to the leg? An irish tragedy: I kicked it up in a fit of laughter so hard at Dave's antics, that my shin caught the sharp cast iron base of the seat in front of me- causing me to laugh and cry at the same time.

When we all get together it is amazing what nonsense we think makes sense and we all agree about. ONly when, as he does here, tries to explain to someone who is not party to the conventions, do we see how stupid it all really is. Time is but a small example of this. He was a genius for seeing the nonsense in everyday life and our ridiculous our conventions truly are. I miss him a lot

The whole imperial measurement system(The one the US uses), is also part of this, makes no sense compared to the simple and easy metric system. America please, it's 21centuary!
@Turrican60
@Turrican60 6 жыл бұрын
petereuk52: I take the points you're making, but I very slightly disagree. On the contrary, much of the machinery of everyday life makes perfect sense when you stop and think about it - and yes, that includes the traditional clock face. If such things didn't make sense, then Mankind would have devised far better alternatives by now and ceased using such methods long ago. In the case of time measurement, our system is solely determined by the Earth's rotation and orbit around the sun. Accordingly, as it's a cosmic event, we have no choice in the matter where our time system is concerned, ergo it's not at all "stupid". The Dave Allen 'way' was to simply take the extremely ordinary (or exceedingly familiar), and twist it into something that, on the surface at least, APPEARED to be utterly nonsensical. Such an approach takes exceptional talent to pull off with genuine conviction, swagger and style....and that's why, even to this day, I still regard him as the greatest comedian of all time. Many have stolen a few pages from Dave's unique book of humour, but none have even got close to touching this much-missed, genius of a comic. He's an absolute legend.
@Turrican60
@Turrican60 6 жыл бұрын
MiZunoX L: Personally, I'm equally happy using the Imperial system (UK) or the metric system as I'm fully conversant with both. There again, I suppose I was lucky enough to be raised at a time when both systems were in common usage in Britain...plus I entered into a career where precise measurement in both these systems was essential. Oddly enough though, I prefer the traditional Imperial system for some weird reason, lol ;-)
@E101ification
@E101ification 6 жыл бұрын
I don't think the point is that these 'conventions' are 'stupid', merely that we take for granted how easy to understand they are because we're used to them, and we forget that to an outsider or newcomer they're incredibly complicated to master.
@crystallineblue4344
@crystallineblue4344 5 жыл бұрын
@@Turrican60 the Imperial measurement system is 'friendlier'. Here in Canada, metric is widely accepted for pumping gas, laboratory tests, road signs, ordering industrial materials, etc. But personal measurements such as recipes, birth announcements, our height/weight, etc, majority of us prefer imperial.

My generation grew up with Dave Allen so all you young ones out there might not be able to read a clock but you should now understand the meaning of the generation gap, yes?

Dave Allen is the greatest comedian of all time, period. Never noticed his left finger until now. God bless him.

Yeah! From that I was imagining about what the poor kid was thinking, "Okay, the first hand is the hour hand...got it! The second hand is the minute hand...got it! But then Daddy said the third hand is the second hand. What? Are there two minute hands, now or what? Gee I'm so confused. Will I ask him or is he gonna yell at me again?!"😁
