Everything about this is perfect...That it is in black and white. That almost everybody is wearing those old school glasses. That the saxophone player has a slightly receding hairline, which makes him look like a professor. That the drummer looks really mild-mannered, but is an absolute beast. That Dave likes to watch each guy when they solo...

Quartet is 4. The song is in 5/4 time, an odd time signature. Paul Desmond is on sax, Brubeck is on piano.

My main men Mojo and Uncle Ted! Four is a quartet. This classic came from Brubeck's seminal album "Time Out", which featured songs in odd time signatures. For instance,"Take Five" is in 5/4 time. You're correct about the samples and covers. Chet Atkins, legendary Nashville guitarist/songwriter/producer, did a cover of this as well.
