After reading the Black Legion books by Aaron Dembski-Bowden, Abaddon is one of my absolute FAVORITE characters in the W40K universe. Used to think he was nothing but a wannabe Horus with severe daddy issues, but the Black Legion books are rally good for giving him a LOT of context, and making me want to see him win the Long War. Made the mistake of reading those books BFEFORE starting Fall of Cadia, and now I find myself reading Fall of Cadia, and rooting for the Black Legion to decimate the planet.

I think it's Saturday morning cartoon villain syndrome. He's the poster "big bad" for chaos, so he's described as if he is some ultimate threat but chaos are never the protagonists, and unlike with the Horus Heresy the current setting needs to maintain a high degree of "status quo" to allow room for the tabletop to feel believable and immersive. All this means Abaddon just ends up looking like an impotent loser and/or the 40k equivalent of an edgelord teen at school who claims all sorts of edgy nonsense but is at the end of the day just a kid. GW tried to fix this with the 13th dark crusade but the damage is done. Decades of being a joke can't be retconned away

@@dylonson4786 I mean on a metathematic scale. Surviving in the long war is impressive but not unique or even that noteworthy among chaos space marines as far as I can tell. Beating the horus clones is unique but feels like it relies on author fiat. It feels very obvious that he was written to be ''THE big bad, be afraid so scary such power much wow'' long before any actual consistency came into play in his portrayls My understanding is that dude didn't even want to lead what would become the black leigon and headed off to sulk for hundreds of years. Mind you I should give some credit where it is due I am impressed that he has remained as sane as he has and avoided becoming a chaos spawn Now the one very valid critique you have is that yes, I haven't read his books. I don't buy warhammer stuff because I am trying very hard not to go broke. I have been following this stuff for the last 15 years though, through author interviews, book reviews, G.W podcasts like Voxcast,et al, wayback machine access to their sites, exerpts, Lore videos here on youtube(I have several hundred saved to playlists) so I do think I have some small inkling of whats normal and not so normal in setting. Quite frankly, compared to figures Luft Huron/Huron Blackheart or even Warsmith Honsou I just don't find much compelling about his character. Maybe that is my fault for not seeking information on him out very much. Maybe it's my mental association with seeing the black leigon as ''chaos ultrmarines'' narrativley (yes I know, they are Luna Wolves + others) So, I tell you what. I'm not going to waste my limited funds on such books but I will try seeking out more information on this topic. If anything changes my mind on this character, you will likely be the first to know. No matter what you think about Abaddon, you can't deny that the man has a grit and a determination that can really inspire. Despite all the failures, dubious allies, and constant chaos infighting, he managed to push on through for millenia. We should all aspire to have such unshakable resilience and focus. He's undeniably a total POS, but one of the most impressive POS in fiction.

abaddon is genuinely one of the coolest characters in 40k, and imo, archaon/abaddon are key to their settings--the chosen one who in fact is not a "true believer" in the same was as many of their followers, for no true believer could WIELD chaos like they do.
