Colin's baseline on Chalkhills was also inspired; often a kind of tenor part.

Thanks Greg for this awesome interview. I had the opportunity to see XTC at a small College in Chicago when they were on tour with the Police. They were incredible.

This entire interview with Dave and Gregg is unbelievable. Relaxed and conversational, and there is SO much information here. The amount of detail that Gregory can recall about working on the XTC songs is revelatory. Knowing how they got the guitar sound on "No Thugs In Our House" made me smile, because I have cranked that song and relished the rhythmic intensity of that guitar for years. Thanks to both of you for this incredible window into the creation of these sonic musical masterpieces.

"Earn Enough For Us" was the first song I ever heard from XTC. Needless to say, I was hooked instantly. I agree with Dave in that everyone should hear it. And depending on the person, it's the first song I'll play for someone who's never heard XTC and is a fan of The Beatles or Pop/Power Pop in general. If it's someone who's into Punk, etc... I'll play them something off the first 4 records which is not set in stone. I'll feel them out first.

This man brings me so much joy each time I listen to him speak. The stories, the eloquence, the gift of music he's tirelessly given us over the past 40+ years has and continues to enrich my life. As a long-time XTC/Dukes fanatic, I appreciate you, Gregg, for being the consummate extemporaneous interviewer. The perpetual music geek in me anticipates further meanderings down the rabbit hole with you and Dave, hopefully sooner than later.

Never get tired of listening to Dave. The man is a total delight, and he eats, drinks and sleeps music. A real musician's musician with no ego and whose purpose is to do whatever the songs require. For all the brilliant songwriting of Andy and Colin, XTC wouldn't have been half the band they were without Dave's contributions with his brilliant guitar work and arrangements. I was always aware that Andy wasn't keen on Sgt. Rock, but I was surprised to hear that Dave also wasn't that keen on it. Although it was hardly the most profound song Andy wrote, I think it's a brilliantly catchy song with hooks all over the place. Great that Dave loves Chalkhills and Children - such a glorious and touching song, and also Across This Antheap, which features such a passionate and powerful coda. Long may Dave continue to make music, and long may we enjoy listening to his wonderful words of wisdom. A real gent and a true legend of the music world.

I think Across This Antheap, was a FUCKING brilliant song, in every way imaginable. I can listen to it repeatedly and never get tired. Its my favorite song on the record, I am pleased to hear Dave say this.

Gregg, I can't thank you enough for this and the 5+ hours of Andy Partridge interviews...I was not aware of you until these (to my shame) but I am now and will listen to much more of this podcast series and your own music. I've kept track of my listens to each album I've heard since 2005 and have "reviewed" every album I've heard for the past 10 years, and you sound like my long-lost musical brother from another mother. Thank you so much!

Very true : the Paul Fox production has not been celebrated enough. "All of the XTC music holds up over time" : very true too. True artistry involved on every level. Ha ha ha... All Todd Rundgren fans are connected, we may not be millions but we know...

28:17 As someone in my late 30s, who has known about XTC for more than 2 decades due to those well known songs and others, only to finally become huge fan THIS YEAR, I must say that Earn Enough for Us is a perfect example of a song that finally cemented the band in my own personal rock and roll hall fame. Great answer from Dave.

Figured you'd like "Sgt. Rock" since it features the Tarkus theme as the melody ;)

Gotta say, he's right - "Rook" would have been better w/o the click. I always wondered what the point was of the almost metronomic approach. Sounded like a sample almost. Should have been like a Scott Walker track.

Gregg these discussions have had me review some XTC stuff that I had previously dismissed, and I thank you for that. I particularly love any discussion that surrounds "Skylarking," not that I think that its their best, but I love the whole history and story behind it. Obviously, a discussion with Todd would be enlightening, I'm sure it has crossed your mind, not only due to your connection with TR, but he does seem to be media friendly these days and he is always good for a laugh. You would get something out of him that other interviewers wouldn't. Anyway, I thank you for hard work and dedication, and I look forward into delving into all of your shows. Cheers from sunny Detroit.
