For me it was Metallica. I'm only a few years younger than Dave and thanks to my older brothers I grew up listening to an eclectic mix of rock, pop & other genres of music like jazz. When I got into my teens, Metallica was the blueprint, like the Beatles: four guys who played their own instruments and were in charge of their own thing-they wanted to conquer the world without compromising their music if possible. When Metallica hit it big it was validating for millions of fans of theirs-and music fans overall-worldwide. Then the Napster thing happened, haha… They've done a pretty good job of keeping it real over the years and acknowledging when they've gone wrong. That's one of the secrets to longevity in the music business.

Paul McCartney is like that though. He is friends with seriously everyone. I would go as far as to say that Dave and Paul might be the nicest people in the music industry.

@@SoftTangerineDreams that is as of now, when he's gotten older. In the 70's he was viciously fighting the 3 people he should have been the closest to. Now he just tries to get along with everyone who's famous, and frankly, that has made me lose respect for him. John Lennon would never have made the shitty collaborations that Paul has put out.
@SoftTangerineDreams4 жыл бұрын
@@frusciante3499 Paul has always been very sociable. He was very bossy in the Beatles because of his perfectionist nature, just like Dave Grohl is with Foo Fighters (which sparked bullying rumors in '97 when they replaced their drummer with Taylor Hawkins). But I do in no way believe Paul is a villain or a bad guy in any way. Does he suck up to people? Sure, probably. But he is naturally charming and extremely generous. He's not as real as John was, but not many people are.
@frusciante34994 жыл бұрын
@@SoftTangerineDreams he is certainly very sociable and charming. However, I wouldn't call him generous after what he did to Ginger Baker, the eccentric and groundbreaking drummer for Cream, in the 70's. He basically used his studio in Africa and then screwed him over. I like Paul, but he certainly has done some not so generous things to other people. As, for Dave, I haven't read much about him, as I regard him as a mediocre songwriter at best.
@SoftTangerineDreams4 жыл бұрын
@@frusciante3499 I don't know that Ginger Baker story as I haven't listened to Cream yet. Might look into it. I am in no way condoning that kind of behaviour, but he's going on 60 years of being in the music industry with unfathomable reaches of fame, and I still think he's extremely down to earth for someone with such an extraordinary life as Paul. If he's fucked some people over on the way, I wouldn't be too surprised (it's the entertainment industry after all), but I don't support it. As for Dave, I'm a big fan of Nirvana and Dave was my favorite member. I'm a fan of Dave as a person, but not too into Foo Fighters music, it's not really my style. His songwriting is not bad in my opinion, but not the best. He has been dubbed the nicest guy in rock and keeps his feet on the ground. I admire how well rounded he is.

@RoarOfWolverine3 жыл бұрын
The important thing about the Beatles was they wrote their own music. Now, some bands had written their own music before the Beatles, but few of them could write chart topping songs. Just like today, most every hit song is written by some middle aged Swedish dude. This is true. There are two Norwegian guys, who are middle aged and have written nearly every hit song that pop artists have had. The Beatles could cart with their song, so they smashed that myth. It was always believed by record companies that you needed writers, like this Scandinavian Fellows to make hits. The Beatles put that puppy down. They not only put it down, they passed a burial and went straight to cremation, because they Beatles could consistently put hit after hits the chart, often having the B side push the A side song off the top. Of course no one else would ever do what the Beatles did, but it did tell record companies they could sign new bands and take a chance they could write a hit song. Sure it wasn’t sure-fire, but us fans rejoiced because we still knew that records that didn’t top Billboard’s charts are still good songs. Do you know that Jimi Hendrix never had a number one hit record, but I say his music is just fine for me. Groups like Led Zeppelin and Nirvana never had a chance number 1. The closest Nirvana got was Smells Like Teen Spirit at number 6, but who really cares? Anyway, the Beatles made all this possible. Thanks to them, we have had bands like Zep and Nirvana and many, many more, especially during the 70s, 80s and 90s. The Beatles proved that a band could write their own music and succeed, something that was an experiment by the record Brass. Always scared to make a bad investment, they would prefer to stay with their formula that they know works. That is, hiring some Norwegian to write then hire the best studio musicians to record the song, then hire some seriously talented backup singers for the harmonies, then finally bring in some pop diva who is very popular to record the vocals. Boom! 💥 Instant 💥 number one hit and they sell millions of records, so they’re happy, even if a lot of that music leaves you cold. It’s inorganic and by the time it goes down the assembly line, it had lost all integrity and feeling many times. The Beatles music was very organic as is most band’s music. I always preferred listening to bands, though I worked in many studios and the musicians that do track for those diva songs are second to none. Hell, most of those guitarists, bassists and drummers were incredible. I always thought some were even better than many famous musicians at their instruments, but for one reason or another, just like me, they became a studio musician, just don’t dismiss these guys as the problem. Being part of a machine like that they can play well, but not really get the feeling the writer is going for, so it all sounds cold and mechanical in the end, but all pop music sounds that way to me.
