I am continuously surprised by how much time people waste on being negative. I was instantly intrigued by this due to the sheer amount of color! It seems to bring twice the gratification due to being able to watch the slowly creeping colors and looking at the static, finished product.

Art is freedom of thought and action. This is art too though the idea is a different method of doing it.
@falseteeth56219 жыл бұрын
I disagree. Freedom of action and thought is simply that - freedom of action and thought. If you believe that to be art, then everything is art - making a sandwich, blowing your nose, switching tv channels, stamping out a cigarette.
@falseteeth56219 жыл бұрын
Correct! Art is a creative thought PLUS the technical ability and skill to turn that thought into art. Here's an example of this - I can't play the violin but I have some creative ideas. I hum lots of tunes and melodies but when I pick up a violin I can only make scratchy sounds that are out of tune and follow no musical scales. But because I have the creative thought and freedom put pick up that violin, does that make me a musician? Of course it doesn't. The same applies to food. Would you go to a top restaurant if the person making the meal had no skill or training but he had creativity. If he opened a tin of beans and put a gooseberry on top would that make him a chef? No it wouldn't, so why do people think that anyone and everyone who picks up paint and a paintbrush is an artist?
@soundsfrench9 жыл бұрын
False Teeth how the fuck do you get a violin under your chin when your head is up your ass? I suppose contortionism is an art form. Good on ya, keep it up there ;-)

to those who think this is not art: this is NOT easy: firstly, one would have to choose which colors to use and in what order; secondly, what kind of paint to use - too thick and it won't run, too thin and it will just wash together or spread out too thin; thirdly how much to pour on each layer and how you pour it - notice how careful they are, not just dumping it on all at once, especially towards the end; oh and I also forgot about the boxes, the shape/height of which determine how the paint moves; I'm sure there are other details, this is just what came to my mind watching the videos
@jennyr97669 жыл бұрын
Musiccalgary Thats a bad argument and you know it. The painter has spend a good amount of time learning about texture and colour. They are not born with this knowledge. Neither are these people. They had to think about it and take it into consideration. Texture and colour is not a non-concern simply because the time spend learning about it lies in the past.
@jennyr97669 жыл бұрын
Yes, ofcourse. Like Karel Appel never painted in ridiculous colours. (He did) or the classic marmor statues of the greek were not painted so bright it made your eyes bleed. Like van Gogh always drew in browns (some resent studies on the type of ink he used showed that his scetches where bright purple). Or painted realistically with a sensable amount of paint. The colour choises here are rather well done. No two colours that match in any way. No two darks after the other. You might not think it pretty because its not the stuff they show in a standart highschool art history class or simply because you dislike bright colours. But please dont come with "look at art history" and presume you are in any way making a point. Its a bad argument simply because a "lack of sophisticated choices" is a massive part "art history".

On the whole 'Happiness' theme, this video and the art they produced in it has made more than 20,000 viewers happy. In the scale of things, the small amount of paint they used to do this would never have been able to be spread out to allow that many children or people paint something. As long as art is being produced and shared, any tools used for it was not 'wasted'.

This is the Art School Abstract exact equivalent of a Bob Ross painting; the only difference is ol' Bob remains ever pretentiousness free, and he didn't use $500 of paint each time. Bob C. 5 mos ago: Wrong - A few claim art is about expression, but Action Painting or Expressionism involves emotional investment either via physical effort, or by intentional paint choices. Saying this totally detached, arbitrary pouring is expressive totally misses the difference, in fact Color Field painters just as often denied any emotional content. Hobbyists mistake total skills-free abandon with 'Expression'; this is a Beginner's Color Field exercise, and if they're honest with themselves, the participants can use it to see how different (read inferior) their result is from well-known artists, from Louis and Jenkins to Still to Pollack.

Paul Jenkins arranged unstreched canvas in different ways, using chairs, sofas, pots and pans and about anything else. He then poured very liquid, very thin paint on the canvas. The paint ran along the creases and crevices. Where it pooled, he often allowed it to concentrate and darken. he also used an ivory knife to move the paint around. Lots of photos of him painting.

Wow, guys...so critical! Just because someone doesn't have a good voice, doesn't mean their efforts to sing don't qualify as singing. Art is expressing oneself through the act of creating. For some, it's recreating...and for others, it's a looser approach like the one above. Whether you find the pieces attractive or not, they are still art. Just because someone isn't musically talented, doesn't mean they shouldn't be allowed to sing if it brings them enjoyment. Likewise, these individuals seemed to enjoy the creation of these pieces...and there are those that would pay money to obtain them to display on their walls. Lay off. For what it's worth, I'm an artist that prefers realistic looking material...but it's very stressful to get every stroke or stiple just right. I find work like this freeing and refreshing. If you feel offended that this is considered art, then you have a pride issue. Sorry.
