We met up with Guitar tech Colin Price at the Roskilde Festival (DK), who gave us a gear run of Dave Murray's setup; from stomp boxes and effects, to amps and guitars used on the Iron Maiden 2011 tour.
The video includes the following products from TC Electronic:
The G-Force system: www.tcelectroni...
The PolyTune: www.tcelectroni...

Makes me laugh these guitar tech's. "Really simple setup, in out, shake it all about, into here, out there, except the backup through there, back into here through a woober valve, round the front, up the elephant round the castle, delay the inevitable, front of house, back through wet dry, redundant hobbit wabble, pedal board, tens amps, only use five. And that's it, nice and straight forward." My rig, Frankenstrat into a GT10 and out to headphones. Complicated. :D

Well, the chain is simple, is probably what they mean by that. - It's just the guitar into the JPM-1 and then into the JCM-2000 power-amp, with some effects in between and in front. - But then they wired it up with a MIDI-controller to switch things. - That complicates things for the sake of direct control, but it's not that complex. It also doesn't matter, because nobody needs to know about that. And today, he apparently doesn't even use "real" amplifiers anymore and went the modeling-route. - RiP Rock 'n' Roll

@@kekkonenprkl Yet another downgrade. First Blackstar amps and now this. - Don't get me wrong, I'm not some old head, but their sound is with Marshall-gear and you can hear it. Well, I can. I don't even like the Blackstar-amps on the albums. - But I have to doubt how much Davey can still hear. Love him, but these guys are old and have spent forever in front of blasting speakers and drums.

One bit that isn't commercially available is the JMP-1, which Marshall hasn't made in awhile. But for better or worse, thanks to the huge popularity of pedals, old rack gear is still reasonably affordable and these aren't too hard to find if you want one.

Yea, and these players have had them for years. At least Dave, Adrian and Janick had them since like the late '90s or something, if not a bit earlier, and I believe they were launched in the early-'90s. But back then, Dave and Janick used JCM 800s as I understood it. - But at this point a lot of them probably switched to modeling. Dave and Adrian even used Blackstar heads for a while and now at least Dave is with AxeFX.

lol Geez... Three amplifier heads, of which TWO are spares. XD "Just to be safe." Is there really no more convenient version of the JCM 2000?? Especially considering they're only there for the power-section. I really don't understand. There must be something really specific about them that they will bother to carry three heads. Meanwhile, MetallicA's crew are going with Fractal modelers and solid state power amps for the sake of reliability. Not that I agree with it, because I think for professionals they can get their hands dirty and just deal with it. But these are two extremes.
@irondarwin2483

A band that big, you're going to have at least one back-up anyway. They used to use dedicated power amps but they're harder to find on a moment's notice. Truth is he could probably use any Marshall 100 watt tube head since his tone is coming from the JMP-1. I guess if all else failed, he could play the gig with just the DSL if needed. A bit of overkill to be sure, but given the amount of gear they travel with, an extra head is no biggie.

I have both a T.C. (G-Major with Dave's presets) and a JFX (also set on Dave's tone). I can't figure out how he uses both. They are clearly both powered on and set on cho/del/rev mode. 🦧 I don't think the JFX being used with the backup line, he has another G-force for that, ready to use.

They're all sci-fi and fantasy nerds. Bruce in Somewhere in Time made several Blade Runner references, "To Tame a Land," was inspired by Frank Herbert's Dune series, the concept for the album Seventh Son of a Seventh Son was inspired by Seventh Son by Orson Scott Card. There's more, but I can't think of them at the moment.

@Haggath
@Haggath 3 жыл бұрын
Pretty much. One thing to note is that there's 2 inputs for backup purposes so that if rig A was to experience problems, the tech can switch to rig B (which has the same components). The guitars are the inputs so the other end of the cable going into rig B would have to be given to Dave to make the switch. Anyway, I think the rig goes something like this: Guitar -> Cornish Routing -> MH TS808 + Uni Vibe -> JMP-1 Preamp -> DSL100 FX Return (for power amp only) -> Cab. The Marshall JFX, and Cry Baby Wah are all in the loop and are controlled from his pedal board. Rocktron All Access is used to switch between clean, rhythm, and lead patches on the JMP 1 via MIDI. Wah Controller also used for rack-mounted wah. Now what I think the TS808 is used for is his solo boost maybe as he has the drive set quite high (you can see the MH808 settings if you pause the video), which he has a controller out the front to turn on or of OR his tech can turn on/off if Dave is away from his board. Hope some of this helps, and would love for anyone to correct anything that I may have gotten wrong!

@@londisrun555 Dave Murray didn’t when using this rig. The JMP-1 had a cable running from the send output to the return input of the FX Loop on the JCM 2000 DSL 100. Only the master volume section was then used on the head. Adrian Smith also used a JMP-1 in the early 2000’s but thought his sound was too similar to Dave and Janicks. He then used a DSL 100 from 2008-2011 roughly, and he used the full head along with a Peavey pre amp but I think he used everything on that. Hope this helps!

He also used it on some of the solos and power-chords in the distant past, like the '80s past, just to give it some flair. But his sound was very different back then and he doesn't really use it in that capacity anymore, so probably indeed more the clean stuff to, again, give it some flair and texture. It kinda acts like adding a Chorus for example, which Adrian does do.

Fair to assume then that what you'd want for their 80s sound is his old Di'marzio loaded sig, a JCM800 (probably with a greenback cab) and for pedals it's just the Cry Baby Wah, Uni-Vibe and TS9. What most people fail to realise is that all the stuff in the back is fail-safes should anything go wrong, as well as quality of life stuff so that the musicians can fokus on their performance and not worry about turning their effects of and on, etc
