The reason Mustaine plays rhythm in Megadeth is because nobody else can play the riffs-rhythm section as well as he does, not because he lacks ability to play solos. Those killer riff-rhythms are the ground structure of Megadeth songs. This guy is a musical genius.

I agree with most of what you're saying but you're seriously discrediting the other Megadeth guitarists if you think they cannot handle fast, complex thrash rhythm sections. Marty Friedman in particular is a phenomenal rhythm guitarist, as evidenced by the first couple of Cacophony albums and Dragon's Kiss. Chris Poland could play anything on this planet. Jeff Young is probably the least talented guitarist (along with Al Pitrelli) that was in Megadeth but he was also a muscular rhythm player. Glen Drover, Broderick and Kiko are also fast and tight rhythm guitarists who can handle whatever riff Dave his written, while he solos. Long story short, Dave focuses more on the riffing side of it because that's his strong suit...

Just saw megadeth in early May and Dave's still got it. His voice is a little gone live which is completely understandable considering all of the stuff he's been through but his guitar playing was as good as it gets. He really surprised me. The man didn't miss a single note and being someone that has learned a lot of his solos and music in general its mind blowing to me how he can pull all of it off live in his sixties. Ill remember that show for the rest of my life. I wish Dave could live on and play forever 🤘🤘

ALWAYS was better than Kirk Hammett on lead whenever he was live. Although Kirk is a great guitarist as well, who inspired many a young metalhead to pick up the instrument and start rocking. But Mustaine is on a whole different level overall in terms of guitar skills. He inspired and helped propel forward a genre and a generation of musicians.

Dave is the greatest metal guitarist of the last 30 years but soloing is not his strongest point, if we're being honest. He's good at it but his tight rhythm playing is what really set him apart from most. There's a good reason why he's always recruited killer lead guitarists for Megadeth, because Dave rather focus on rhythm than lead. Poland and Friedman are so far ahead of him as a soloist, it's ridiculous. Then you've got monsters like Broderick and Kiko. Dave knows ;)

I read that Dave also approves all the solos in his songs. You have to admire what restraint it takes to allow a soloist in your band to play a solo and not want to shape it and critique it

I enjoy watching Dave play guitar. Maybe he's sloppy or there's 7024934347473 guitarists who are better than him, but there's something that is the essence of metal about Dave on stage that I enjoy. I enjoy the songs. I have fun and feel energy when I listen to them. That's all I require.

As a shredder myself, What Mustaine does is fast , but very repetitive . Running up and down the neck with the same lick over and over may impress , but it wears off quick " It definitely ain't No Marty Friedman . Now that's how you play lead without sounding repetitious every song or using only two or three scales at best. Mustaine 's Rhythm is better then his leads "
