"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on KZbin. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on KZbin, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode. “That Raytheon decided they don’t hate gays or trans people - frankly, I don’t really give a shit what their take on that is..."

"If one of (my children) turn out to be gay, that's fine too." Just not ideal, apparently. His greater point seems to be that because society shuns anything but the ideal, that everyone should capitulate to that ideal instead of finding their own happiness and perhaps changing what is considered the ideal. Even though it is utterly mutable and is not the same in every place at every time, Dave Rubin is saying to just give up being anything but what others expect of you if you want your life to be easier.

Rubin pushes the conservative lie that most common = best. Het relationships are most common, therefore they're ideal. Same-race relationships are most common, so they're best. Christianity is most common faith in US, so it's true. It's the exact same christian mindset from a millennia ago, that left-handed = satan touched. Most common = best, therefore rare (like homosexuality) = bad.

Uhmm, just a reminder that they all left the motherland over religious reasons; for practicing their particular religious beliefs. Religion was pretty much the rule of the day for anyone coming from Europe and though it might not look like it does today it was nevertheless something you were or respected. The constitution wasn't written to protect secularists, it was written to protect their rights to practice their type of Christian worship (other religions get the benefit of that but you and I both know that those other religions were most likely an afterthought at best) and the new bourgeois belief in self determination. So it is secular but in the context of nothing resembling these times.

As someone who’s father died when I was a year old there is some genuine substance to 2 gay parents not being “ideal.” It’s simply not possible for a mom to truly be like a dad and for a dad to truly be like a mom. With that said tho if we allow single parents to raise children there’s no reason we shouldn’t allow gay parents to do it. There’s plenty of kids in foster care who would be much better off with gay parents than they would be staying in the system.

What he should have said was “I would prefer my child be straight because it’s just one less thing they have to deal with. In the same way I hope they are tall or attractive. They won’t have to deal with figuring it out and accepting their own sexuality. It’s just one more thing that the majority of people don’t have to wrestle with while growing up. Also obviously it’s wildly more important that you accept yourself and as far as parenting goes it’s also wildly more important that the parents love the child and are trying their best than their gender or sexual orientation.” That would be his counterpoint anyway if he’s sticking to his original argument. It’s hard to overestimate the importance of how far the founders went out of their way to ensure the Constitution is a strictly secular document.

"The American Founders sought a republic ruled by a “natural aristocracy” of able and moral men." Their "morally" was expressed in the genocide of the native population, the designation of black men(slaves) as 3/5th of a man and the relegation of landless masses to non voting 2nd class citizenship. Far as women went...fuggetabouthat. Let's not mythologize and turn it into something it wasn't?

The consitution is inherently not a secular document because of the context in which it was written. The consitution restricts the power of the government to infringe people's God given rights. Modern leftists directly oppose this idea, so instead of admitting that the United States was not founded with our modern idea of religious freedom, and that the 'separation of church and state' did not exist for most of American history, they just rewrite history. State funded churches existed for nearly a hundred years after the consitution was written, and blasphemy laws existed for even longer than that. Unfortunately, leftists will only defend the constitution in the pretext of being able to mold it to their modern leftist standards. They have no respect for tradition, which explains why as soon as the constitution or any historical figure disagrees with them, they immediately denounce it or them as incorrect and of no significance to the modern day.

Kyle, you are conflating two concepts. 1) For CHILD REARING it may be "ideal". The data is not in for 2 same sex parents. It may be the case that because of the differences between men and women bringing different benefits to the table for raising children, that in the aggregate it is beneficial. 2) Being gay or straight for LIVING LIFE or ACCEPTANCE can be equal.

Eeeeh. Number of parents doesn't matter at all. What matters is that the kid has the resources and attention they need. With most single parent situations, both resources and attention is difficult to provide. Two parents are better at it, and more than 2 (i.e. communal parenting) has been the norm for most of human history. If you had a single parent who was given enough money that they could spend all the time they needed looking after the kid, the kid would turn out fine.

Other than as a cynical, non materialistic and, thus, not offensive to the liberals' donor class, political ploy, LGBTQPlus "rights" are not a liberal ideal either. On everything else, once the rhetoric/propaganda is excised, the two parties represent the interests of their mutual, War Industry and Wall Street profiting donor class.

I could be wrong, and even though I generally agree that Rubin is not that bright, it kind of feels like Kyle is deliberately misinterpreting him to dunk on him. Seems to me Kyle is operating on an ideal world where people all treat each other respectfully. I think Dave is talking about the ideal that the world socially accepts right now. Like... It would be less painful and difficult for his kids if they were hetero because of all the bias in the world. It still doesn't quite track with his Christian Conservative stuff but if that's how he's looking at it then I kind of understand what he's getting at.

@@johnpoole3871 by playing dumb I mean that we're trying to wave away the obvious in lieu of a laugh about Rubin dunking on himself and it devolves into team sports. The bottom line is that the ideal family has both a mother and a father, a child needs both, and there's no scientific or social debate that's going to uncover something we don't know, it just is the way things are. Like water is wet. People would rather virtue signal than have a tough conversation that may hurt some feelings. (I'm not trying to hurt anyone's feelings.) I feel like the conclusion on the left these days is, if any feelings get hurt, the opinion MUST be bigoted and racist. It's just silly.

I think probably what Rubin should have said with regard to his sons being straight or gay, is that the probability is that they will both be heterosexual, with a small probability of one of them being homosexual, and a tiny probability of both so, but that he would accept them regardless, and it's not something he will have any control over anyway.

It seems more that he’s talking about the ideal being the balance of the feminine and the masculine which is most easily portrayed among a female and a male. It would make sense to me that a more effeminate male with a more masculine male could simulate the ideal better than some straight couples do, but that doesn’t discredit the fact that the ideal is a masculine and feminine influence on the child rather than too much masculinity or too much femininity
