Thanks for the review. Just to advise folk, you can listen to the full performance of it, on KZbin...(And I didn't encounter one advert)....

David, I wish you would return to doing "The Best Version of...." Because in those talks you discuss a number of the best versions of something, not just one. I find that quite valuable.

I've already done so many. I'll get back to them eventually.

I'll be listening to this, thanks for doing the video. My favorite 4th heretofore has been Monteux and the LSO. He nailed 2 and 4 for spirit, flow, inevitable sense of pacing.

Smoking no 8 from the BPO also. Boy could Jochum make music smile.

Totally agree about the 4th vs the 3rd. In my experience, Jochum is very dependable across the Austro-German repertoire

That’s a wonderful recording, and for the record, it is streamable, along with the rest of the DG Jochum cycle (which generally, I think, doesn’t get enough love).

The 4th is my favorite. For some reason I never tire of it. I will have to give Jochum a spin. My favorite has always been Steinberg's Command recording.

I wonder if your observations about the Third account for why I didn’t like that symphony when I first heard it. It’s become one of my favorites but it wasn’t instant love like I got with the 4th, 5th, 7th and 9th. I do think the 4th is his most underrated symphony (as much as it is possible to underrate a Beethoven symphony), or second most after the 2nd. I don’t think I’ve heard this particular recording and will seek it out.

Dave, I have been keeping a spreadsheet of these and sorting by composer, you’ve included Beethoven’s 2-9. Looking elsewhere, (focusing on symphonies only) to identify any lacunae. I am not saying the following should be included, just an exercise to see if there’s any you’ve unintentionally omitted: Bruckner - not included 1, 3, 8 & 9 Dvorak - not included 1-6 Mendelssohn - only string symphonies included Nielsen - only 2 and 3 included Prokofiev - not included 2, 4 & 5 Rachmaninov - only included 2 & 3 Schubert - only included 9 Shostakovich - only included 7, 8 & 10 Sibelius - only included 1, 2 & 5 Tchaikovsky - only included 5 & 6 Vaughan Williams - not a sausage I know a lot of these are covered in other talks, but sometimes your faves don’t agree with your ‘however’ choices, and I’m sure I’m not the only one who has their interest piqued when this happens!

Thanks very much. This is handy. I have left out many that I've already discussed for exactly the reason you mention, but I'll have a look and see what gaps need filling in.

Allí those cycles and boxes are out of print, but there is a box un the Tim Membran label with the DG Beethoven and Brahms cycles (I don't think they are licensed, perhaps out of copyright). I have it and the sound is generally good and detailed, but I can't compare as I have not the DG releases. Dave, could you perhaps confirm if the sound is better in DG than in Membran?
@DavesClassicalGuide2 жыл бұрын
Beggars can't be choosers, so I wouldn't worry about it.

Jochum's first DG set in the '50s was in mono, circa '55, I'm guessing, because there's also a stereo one from the early '60s. I'm guessing you mean the mono one. When a conductor has done many cycles in both the mono and stereo eras it's hard to pinpoint exactly what you mean by "first" performance. People could end up getting the 1961 one, thinking they have the first one, but actually don't have it because there's one from '54-'55. This causes people to either be clueless or have to go digging around in Discogs trying to figure out exactly what you mean. Saying something like "the mono '50s DG" would clear up this kind of thing.
@DavesClassicalGuide2 жыл бұрын
No, the first set was part mono, part stereo, recorded over a decade, and the 4th is stereo from that set. It's easier just to say DG, as I did, or Berlin, because that identifies the set in question. His next one was with the Concertgebouw for Philips, so dates are unnecessary when label or orchestra will do.
@fred69042 жыл бұрын
Jochum recorded Beethoven's 4th symphony for DG whith BPO two times. First 1954 in mono and a second time 1961 in stereo. And they are both included in the big Jochum box on DG.
@DavesClassicalGuide2 жыл бұрын
@@fred6904 I was referring to '61 then.
@mrwelch20042 жыл бұрын
You guys beat me to it as I popped in gramophone and they said this set used to have a 1950s mono 4th that was subsequently replaced by a 1961 version. They pretty much crapped on this set, but screw them as I'm sure they gave Rattle blowing his nose 10/10
