Swarb didnt just talk about it or bollocks about it all - he just went out and DID IT ! He put the ball in the back of the net whilst others dithered. The greatest fiddle player of his time bar none.

I had a wonderful hour talking with Swarb in the back room of his house in Coventry before he moved to Wales. He was keeping warm in front of a coal fire whilst dressed in a long white nightgown. I had a chat with Sam recently and he told a great story about meeting him in the same house whilst Swarb was dressed in the same nightgown! So funny...

Dave Swarbrick and the rest of Fairport Convention have been a light house for me since my college years '66-'70. I saw them play in Philadelphia and have listened to their folk rock psychedelic synthesis as an inspiration to playing. "Dirty Linen", "Eastern Rain", "All Be Thankful" and "Sir Patrick Spence" come to mind, along with, "Who Knows..." Thanks for posting.

Dave Swarbrick's fiddle playing has been one of the foundations for how I approach the guitar!!! I play Rock,Blues-Jazz/Fusion & I find I get the best results by listening to music played by other instruments!!! Dave Swarbrick was a true original & I can't understand why his life & music aren't studied as a university campus!!!?

swarbrick is not just a GREAT fiddle player, but very insightful about critics. they are crap and they aren't necessary. when they're 'effective' they are just bullies.

Was he said was " ten a penny".. That is an old phrase kinda means the same as a dime a dozen.. In other words too many guitar players and not enough fiddle players!

And the person who said it was Beryl Marriott, you can look up her obituary in the Guardian. I still have a copy of Roger and Beryl Marriott's "Tunes for the Band", a tunebook of English dance music.
